  “What do you say to meeting your grandparents?” he asked Darrel. “Believe me, it’s going to be a little weird, surprising them like this, but I think we’re up to it. What do you say?”

  “Okay.” Darrel’s grin was wide. “Good thing you’re a doctor—in case they go into shock.”

  Brandon ushered Darrel out into the hall, his step buoyant now. In an instant his world had changed.

  There was hope.

  On her way back to the room where they had moved Wayne, Mercedes took a quick detour, the white plastic bag clutched in her hand. There was only one place large enough to put it that she’d noticed here in the hospital—in the waiting room.

  There it was, the garbage can near the door. She held out the white bag, hesitating only briefly. It was ripped at the bottom, and she could see the black hearts and tear drops that should never have been on a quilt for a baby. Deliberately she pushed the bag through the opening, and it disappeared from view.

  Gone. It was that easy.

  Lightness filled her entire body as she went to find her husband.
