Lorne’s lip curled up. She was tempted to fly at him and rip the cold black eyes from his head. “My daughter has never, nor will ever, belong to anyone. She’s a British citizen and lives in a free world.”

“You’re wrong.” He pointed to his chest. “I own her. I was in partnership with Baldwin. We’ll dispense of the stupid name he preferred to call himself. She was put to work at one of our more salubrious locations, or so I was told. It was unfortunate that Baldwin took her virginity from her. I could have sold her for far more when the time was right. That man foolishly only thought with his dick at times. He was never quite able to grasp the idea that virgins commanded a higher figure on the open market. He was such a greedy man. I know of a way I can make her a virgin once again. It involves a small surgical procedure, but it will be worth it in the end.” He rubbed his hands together in glee before the cockpit flew open again. “What do you want now?”

“Boss, we’ve got company. A helicopter has just landed.”

“We’re at an airfield, man. What do you expect?”

“This is different, boss. There were two men waiting for the passenger when he left the chopper. They have bikes. I don’t like the look of it, and I’d suggest that we take to the sky sooner rather than later.”

“Very well. Get the pilot to prepare for take-off. Strap the girl in a seat up front with you, and I’ll make the inspector comfy back here with me.”

“Yes, boss. I’ll shut the door.”

Lorne strained her neck, trying to see out of one of the small windows, but it was impossible. Her heart raced at the thought of help arriving soon and of Tony being close by, if in fact it was him they were referring to. He would have to action a rescue attempt quickly, though. She had to figure out a way of stalling the plane from taking off.

The plane’s engines roared to life, and as Warrior swept past them to hoist up the steps and close the door, Lorne dipped her hand into her pocket. She withdrew the pepper spray and aimed it in his face before she turned the can on Popovski, who’d taken pleasure in taunting her. She managed to stall the two men long enough for her to get to the door of the plane and scream for assistance.

“Help! I’m being abducted! Help me.” At the perimeter fence, she could make out two men on bikes and another man talking to them. All three men looked in her direction. That was all she saw before Popovski yanked her back and shoved her into her seat once more. This time, it wasn’t his open hand that connected with her jaw—it was his clenched fist. For a second, everything took place in slow motion.

The plane began to move. Lorne struggled to remain focused, but when a man wearing a helmet jumped aboard the plane, it jolted her mind to focus on the unfolding events. The plane began to swerve as the three men fought. Lorne was eager to jump in and help her rescuer, but within seconds of his timely arrival, he had the situation under control. Her two abductors were soon lying unconscious on the floor, and the plane’s tyres screeched as the pilot applied the brakes.

“Quick, Charlie is in the cockpit. I have no idea how many more men are in there.”

“It’s all right, Lorne. I’ll get her,” the man assured her, his voice muffled by the helmet.

Recognising the voice, she smiled and whispered, “Thanks, Joe.” He gave her a gun and told her to stand over the two men in case they woke up. The plane shuddered to a halt. Sean and Tony rushed up the steps and boarded the plane. Sean took the gun from her hand while Tony enfolded her in his arms. “Oh, Tony, I thought I’d lost you. He said he’d dealt with you. I thought he’d killed...”

“Well, he didn’t. The Taliban couldn’t kill me, and neither could this idiot. You’re stuck with me for life, Lorne Warner.”

He kissed her, a long deep kiss that reflected the magnitude of their love. Once they released each other, Lorne turned to her left to find an amused-looking Sean shaking his head at them. “When you two have quite finished.”

Charlie came out of the cockpit, sprinting like a champion greyhound. Lorne held her tightly, tears spilling from her eyes as she planted dozens of kisses over Charlie’s face. “Darling, we’re safe. I love you so much.”

“I love you too, Mum. What would have happened to us if we hadn’t been rescued? They were linked to the Unicorn, weren’t they?”

“It would appear so, love, yes. It’s best not to think about that now.” She swept a hand over her beautiful daughter’s face.

“Will this kind of thing crop up in the future, Mum? Will more of his associates try to get their own back on us?”

Lorne glanced at Sean then at Tony. Charlie had a valid point. Who knew what sadistic creatures roamed the earth on the lookout for revenge because of Lorne’s success at spoiling their heinous plots of world domination. Life would continue to be full of unwanted surprises going forward—of that, Lorne had no doubt. It would be up to her and her team to continue to rid the world of such evil wrongdoers.
