There exists somewhere a videotaped discussion of the collection. In 1998, Breithaupt invited several people for dinner and a tour of “his” collection. This was all filmed by filmmaker Jack Shea. When asked about it in a deposition Breithaupt said “I don’t know a Jack Shea.” When pressed on the matter Breithaupt finally said “Oh, Jack Shea. A documentary. Jack Shea. I forgot his name.” As if documentary film makers stopped by his place with regularity.

Jonathan Lethem to Alison Clark, Sept. 13, 2004. Breithaupt’s relationship to Lethem is weirdly representative. To this day, Breithaupt mentions him all the time in his writings. In a January 2011 fiction story Breithaupt published in Exquisite Corpse about JD Salinger, Lethem appears. In a July 2011 blog post, Breithaupt asks Lethem, among other authors, for his interpretation of something he saw in Columbus. In The Nervous Breakdown he mentions travelling to see Lethem give a talk in another city.

  Lethem, 10

A couple of Briethaupt’s apologists carried on a flame war with me on a blog I used to run, basically saying exactly what Lethem said, and accusing me of defending a college that had framed a good man.
