First, I’d like to say THANK YOU for not only reading this story, but the back of the box author notes as well. ;-) Here is a ‘true’ story and the names have been included so the guilty (me) is known for it.
Last night, LMBPN Publishing (my company) had a party for our Audio Talent in New York City. We are here for both BookExpo AND APAC which are starting on the same day (today.) Stephen Campbell (Zen Master Walking ™) set it up and it was fantabulous!
Now, we started with a get together at the Boat Basin on W. 79th, and then went to the hotel at 8:30 for dinner. At the hotel were a few guests I had not met and did not recognize. Now, I can be forgiven for not recognizing two of them (I had never met them in person) but not recognizing one is going to go down in the annals of LMBPN Publishing as the perfect example of not remembering faces and names.
I make it into this long room with a long table setup very nicely (for about 14) and just enough room for the servers to fit around once everyone is seated. I go to make my introductions and one woman is smiling at me like she is in on a joke… But, I don’t get the joke, so I hold out my hand, “Hi, I’m Michael Anderle…”
“I know,” she tells me in a British accent, “We’ve met before.”
Well, now I’m screwed. I don’t remember names and faces well and I’m seriously embarrassed that I’ve forgotten this young woman’s name. She keeps talking, and laughing, as she knows I’m trying to figure out who she is.
Stephen (Zen Bastard Walking ™) is smirking at me from her other side.
I close my eyes, hoping that I can reduce the visual overload my brain is going through with the new room, the nice layout of plates, glasses (what are those other glasses for? I recognize the wine glass, and water glass…oh!)
And that is when it hits me. I recognize her VOICE.
It’s Hayley.
You know, the lady I’ve been video conference calling for eight (8) weeks for at least a couple of hours a week minimum?
Just for the record, that whole glasses / no glasses thing (ala Clark Kent?) Yeah, that shit really works.
As I type this, I realize I’m laying down this experience permanently. For those people who read this in ten years, or thirty years (I’m waving my hand at you from the past…so time travel) to realize just HOW bad my goof up was.
Sometimes, I do worse than shoot myself in the foot. THANK YOU for reading the FIRST book we started for the Age of Madness. Look for Book 02 coming soon and Daniel Willcocks’ series The Caitlin Chronicles arriving … well, soon too ;-)
I want to ‘officially’ thank you for joining us in this area of the Kurtherian Universe that I had NO desire to write – but the fans demanded it.
