One Summer Page 13

  “You kissed me,” he said.

I couldn’t decipher if he was upset or pleased. He looked stunned. Off center.

  “Should I apologize?”

He shook his head and touched his lip with his finger. “Did you mean it?”

“Yes,” I said. “So, tell me to stop if you don’t want me.” I brushed my lips against his cheek.

He wrapped his arms around my neck and pulled me closer. “If we do this, I might never stop. Is that okay?”

“You don’t like relationships,” I mumbled.

“I’ve never tried one.” He smirked. “But I’d be open to giving it a shot.”

When our lips met, the kiss tore a moan from me. His entire body was flush against mine, and I forgot we were out in the open, visible to everyone. He ran his fingers through my hair and I opened my mouth when he licked over my lips.

Along with all the other emotions, relief flooded my body. He wasn’t going to reject me. We still had tons to discuss, but this was the best beginning. My whole body was on fire.

A chorus of squirrels cheered, birds tweeted a happy song, and my phone buzzed in my pocket. Jamie wiggled against me and I tried to ignore my phone, but when his started vibrating as well, we broke apart and stared at each other. He leaned forward and rested his forehead against mine, breathing heavily.

  “Jesus,” he gasped.

Our phones buzzed again. I shoved my hand into my pocket, but Jamie stopped me.

“They can wait. This is more important.” He kissed me again and shoved me against the tree.

The tree bark scratched my arm, our phones kept buzzing, and his kisses were getting more intense. I snuck my hands under his shirt, touching his back and feeling his hot skin. My dick was incredibly interested, and if we didn’t stop soon, I was going to come in my pants.

He rutted against me and I lost my footing, sending us down to the ground in a heap. He rolled over and settled between my legs, pressing me into the dirt along with several sticks and rocks.

  “Kell,” Jamie whispered.

Our stupid phones were now buzzing non-stop, and I couldn’t ignore them. I reluctantly broke the kiss and took a deep breath.

“Someone must really want to know where we are,” he said.

He rolled off me and sat up, digging in his pocket to pull out his phone. I marveled at his ability to function when all I wanted to do was shove my hand down my pants and grab my dick.

He showed me his phone just as another text came through. Stef was freaking out along with Barbie. The cupcakes were ready to be served and they needed help. Stef had several choice words for us.

“I’m not ready to go back.” I lay flat on my back and pressed my hand against my aching dick, hoping to relax.

“I know what you mean,” Jamie said. He was in the same predicament as me. “We could go back to the cabin and ignore them.”

“Uh, I don’t think that would be a good idea. Besides, they’re coming toward us.”

We both stared as Carrie, Julian, Barbie, and Stef closed the distance.

“Ugh,” I grunted as Jamie stood and offered me his hand. He shrugged and pulled me up, then proceeded to brush the dirt off my pants. He accidentally bumped my dick, and I had to bend forward to catch my breath.

“You picked a fine time to roll in the dirt,” Carrie said. “Do I need to toss a bucket of water on you two?”

“Did you finally settle things?” Stef asked.

  “Just getting started,” Jamie said.

“You could’ve answered your phone,” Stef said and punched me in the arm.

Everyone chuckled and Carrie pulled a few leaves from Jamie’s hair.

“I know you want to go back to your cabin and have sex, but we need help serving the cupcakes,” Barbie said. “We left Julia and Josie knee-deep in customers.”

Carrie snorted. “I don’t think you should have sex until you two actually talk to each other.”

  “I totally agree,” Stef said.

“That’s probably for the best,” Barbie agreed.

“Oh my god,” I said. “Everyone shut up. No more talk about s-e-x and we’ll help with the cupcakes.”

“You’re such a prude,” Carrie said. “By the way, this is Julian Leonard. He’s an old friend.”

I shook his hand. “I really don’t know these people.”

Julian laughed. “They’re an interesting group.”

“Enough chitchat. We have cupcakes to serve,” Carrie said. “And untuck your shirts.”

My face flamed hot as Jamie tried to hide his obvious problem. I closed my eyes for a few seconds and thought of every boner killer I’d ever experienced.

“I find several deep cleansing breaths help,” Julian said.

Carrie elbowed me. “Your problem seems to be deflating.”

“Yes, thank you,” I said to her.

  “She hasn’t changed,” Julian said.

I bit my tongue because I desperately wanted to ask him what his intentions were. Was he going to hang around for the afternoon then disappear, or was he going to remain in her life? The way Carrie was glowing made me think she wanted him to stay.

“Hey,” Jamie said. “You’ve retreated back into your head again.”

He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and steered me back to the pavilion, where Josie was buried in cupcakes and people.

Carrie tossed gloves at everyone. With more people helping, we were able to get the crowd under control in a short amount of time.

As the event wound down, Josie, Barbie, and Stef enlisted more people to help with the cleanup. After the last bag of garbage had been taken out, Stef told Jamie to take me home and Barbie told Julia to escort Julian and Carrie to her house.

“Are you sure?” I asked Stef.

“Yes, go. I can’t take any more of you making gooey eyes at him. Talk to him. Fix it.” She hugged me tightly. “And I want a full report with explicit details. You owe me that much.”

Jamie was stuffing empty containers into the trunk of our car when I managed to escape a ton of people who had to tell me how fantastic today had been.

“Is there more junk?” I asked.

  “Nope, we’re good to go.”

We stared at each other for a few seconds before he shut the trunk and got into the car. My hand rested on the door handle and I thought about the past four years. I was standing at a crossroads, and in a few hours, I was going to know how much things were going to change in my life.

  “Jesus,” I said.

Jamie honked the horn and ruined my moment of reflection, but then I saw his smile and I ripped open the car door and leaped into the passenger seat.

Even though it was only a few miles to the cabin, the drive seemed to take forever. We decided not to discuss anything until we were sitting on the dock, dressed in comfortable clothing, and holding a drink. Jamie nixed the booze and filled our glasses with lemonade. We both needed a clear mind if we were going to talk about feelings and other embarrassing shit.

“How long?” Jamie asked as he spread out a towel.

We sat down and I rested my head on his shoulder while I tried to figure out how to explain this summer.

  “Kell,” Jamie whispered.

“Give me a second to catch my breath,” I murmured against his neck. He shivered but stayed silent.

I splashed my feet in the water and began my confession. “At the beginning of the summer, I wasn’t thinking about the future, and then suddenly, I did, and it scared the shit out of me.”

Jamie opened his mouth, but I put a finger to his lips to silence him.

“We’ve been friends for four years, and with school over, I thought you’d go away and leave me to flounder on my own. I mean, I still don’t know what’s happening with you— Oh shit, I’m so bad at this.”

  “You’re doing fine,” Jamie said.

“This is all Stef’s fault. Well, I blame Carrie and Barbie t
oo, but mainly Stef. And I don’t want to end up like Carrie and Julian. I have no desire to show up at some reunion fifty years later and see you and wonder what could have been.”

He touched my arm and I stared at his fingers.

“They talked to me too,” he admitted.

  “About what?”

“I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing. Carrie shouted at me for treating you so poorly by bringing home — how did she put it — everything that climbed out of the water and looked my way.”

I laughed. “Maybe you’ve already figured this out, but I don’t want to be roommates anymore. I know it’s the end of the summer, and I probably fucked this all up, but I need you to know that I like you, Jamie.”

This time Jamie shut me up by kissing me. The kiss was full of possibilities and sent my heart soaring. Things were getting hot and heavy fast, and as he slipped his hand under my shirt, I remembered we were supposed to be talking. He tweaked my nipple and I squirmed, trying to twist away from him.

Before I knew what was happening, we lost our balance and fell into the lake.

“Oh my god,” I sputtered as I surfaced. “How has this become my life?”

Jamie coughed and climbed out of the water, flinging his shirt to the ground. “That’s one way to cool off.”

Carrie and Julian were sitting on her deck their shrieks of laughter filling the air.

“I told you two you needed to talk first,” Carrie shouted.

“Did she hex us or something?” Jamie asked.

“I wouldn’t put it past her.”

“Breakfast will be at nine sharp. Don’t be late,” Carrie yelled.

Jamie waved and grabbed my hand as we walked up the hill, dripping water everywhere. I could still hear Carrie laughing even after we closed the door.

Jamie disappeared down the hall and came back with a pile of towels.

“We could just take a shower,” he said.

I straightened one of the pictures on the wall. “These pictures got a workout this summer.”

  “What?”

  “Never mind. It’s not important.”

  “What is important?”

He took off his wet pants and tossed them on the tile floor. Next came his boxers, and even though he’d stripped a million times in front of me, this time I broke out into a sweat. He wrapped a towel around his hips and turned to face me. I felt faint from the flash of skin.

“You should get out of your wet clothes,” he said. “I don’t want you to catch a cold.”

A puddle formed around my feet and I shivered.

“I will, but I need to say a few things first.”

Jamie brushed by me and sat down on the edge of the coffee table.

“You’ve been my best friend for four years and when I realized it was coming to an end, I panicked. Things got worse when everyone told me I’d been in love with you for all those years.”

Jamie opened his mouth but I shook my head.

“Let me say this before the roof collapses or a wild animal strolls through the house.”

  He chuckled.

“I’m not normally a stupid man, but I really feel dumb right now,” I said.

Before I could get another word out, Jamie dropped his towel, and I finally got to see where the sun hadn’t touched him. “I don’t really want to talk anymore.”

  “Can I ask one thing?”

“Ask away.” He stroked his dick, and I almost lost my train of thought.

“Is this a one-and-done sort of thing?”

“I meant what I said earlier. I don’t want to stop, but it’s as many nights as you want, Kellen. You hold all the cards.”

“You’re giving me a lot of power.”

He shrugged. “You’ve always held all the power.”

I shook my head, because that was something we’d have to discuss more carefully. But now was not the time, so I slowly unbuttoned my shorts, peeling them down my legs along with my underwear.

“I never thought you noticed me,” I said.

“I’ve always— it was you who didn’t see me. I’m not that great at relationships, and you scared me.”

“I see you now, and I’m only a little scared.”

He took a step forward and smiled as I dropped my remaining wet clothes. He placed his hand on my cheek. I tilted my head, leaned into his touch, and closed the space between us.

  “Bedroom,” he whispered.

I followed him into his room, trying not to hyperventilate. I’d been thinking about this all summer, and according to Mrs. Jorgenson, Mrs. Benson, and Stef, this was what I’d been wanting since Jamie walked into our dorm room.

He pushed me on the bed and stood between my legs, staring down at me. I was so hard that it made me fearful I’d come as soon as he touched me.

“Not having second thoughts, are you?” he asked.

“That’s about the last thing I’m thinking about.”

“I don’t think I deserve you,” he said. “I’ve been with a lot of people.”

“That’s in the past, and you weren’t the only one who was an idiot. I could’ve opened my mouth and told you what was going on. And you do know, I’m not exactly a virgin either.”

“How about you open your mouth right now?” He winked and straddled my legs, sitting on my hips.

  “No more talking.”

I took a few deep breaths and allowed myself a moment to stare at him. His blue eyes were blown almost black and his cheeks were flushed a beautiful pink. I placed my hands on his thighs and felt his muscles shift beneath my touch.

“Kell,” he mumbled, closing his eyes. “Don’t think poorly of me if I come immediately.”

His words hit me like a freight train as I realized I was free to touch him anywhere.

“Can’t make that promise,” I said, trying to lighten the feeling that the entire weight of the room was sitting on my chest. Jamie leaned forward and his cock rubbed over my abs.

“I want you,” he breathed into my mouth. “I want you, Kell. Please.”

“Yes, have me,” I managed. In reality, I wanted to shout, “Fuck me, fuck me hard, right now,” but with great difficulty, I refrained and kept quiet.

Even though we both wanted each other, the touches were tentative at first, as if searching for an unspoken okay. Jamie furrowed his brow and sat up. My stomach lurched into my throat and my brain supplied me with horrible thoughts of rejection.

“God damn,” Jamie said. “I haven’t been this nervous since my first time with Evie.”

“Who’s Evie?” I asked because I was an idiot.

Jamie rolled off me, turned to his side, and rose up so he was leaning on his arm. “She was a senior in high school when I was a freshman. She scared the shit out of me. Bossy as all fuck but expected me to take the lead. Well, I had no fucking clue what I was doing, and when she took off her clothes, I almost died on the spot.”

As he talked about his terrible first time, I traced his bicep and wondered why we were having this weird conversation. I finally lost the thread of the story and gently placed my hand over his mouth. He winked at me, licked my palm, and suddenly we were on each other like a starving man having his first meal in days.

“More. I need more,” Jamie panted against my neck.

I rolled on top of him, keeping my mouth sealed to his lips and rutting against his thigh. When our dicks touched, he groaned and I had to hold my breath so I wouldn’t come.

  “C’mon Kell, please.”

  “What?” I mumbled.

“I want you to fuck me.”

As soon as his words registered, I froze. “What?”

I might have shouted the word in his face because there was no way he just asked me to fuck him. As far as I knew, he was a top, always the dominant one.

  He swallowed. “I’m serious.”

  “Jamie?”

“Please, I want you to. Unless you don’t do that.”

  “But? Uh, I . . . ,” I stammered.

“It’s the only thing I’ve never given to anyone else. I think, deep down, maybe I was saving it for you.” He rolled us over and pushed up so he hovered over me. His blue eyes sparkled as he waited anxiously for my answer.

He left me speechless and incredibly nervous, but if he wanted me to fuck him, I’d be more than happy to make his dreams come true.

“Not getting any younger here, Kell. And if you don’t do something soon, I’m going to jack off, because I think I’ve been hard all day.”

“I think I’ve been hard the entire summer.”

  “What about Dylan?”

“It was one time. And all we did was get each other off.”

  “You mean you weren’t . . . Wow.”

“Dylan loved Harry, and I was hung up on you.”

  He smiled. “You could’ve said.”

I growled and bit his shoulder. He arched into me and I suddenly remembered the ache in my dick. I snorted and turned his face, sliding my tongue against his. He relaxed and kissed me back. I figured right now, lying on the bed naked, was one of the best moments of my life.

“You sure you want to do this?” I asked.

  “Absolutely.”

He swiped his tongue across my lips and crawled over me, reaching into his nightstand drawer, and rummaged around for a few seconds.

“Fuck,” he snarled and slammed the drawer shut. “Do you have any condoms?”

“Yep.” I leaped off the bed and ran to my bedroom to get what we needed. When I returned, I stopped in the doorway, leaned against the wall, and watched him straighten the blankets on his bed. The muscles in his back rippled, and I had to reach down to squeeze my dick. It would be embarrassing to come from watching him make a bed and thinking about what we were going to do in a few moments. When he noticed me, he gave me one of his panty-dropping smiles and made a show of stroking his dick.

“Christ,” I mumbled. “This is going to be over really fast.”

I tossed the condoms on the bed. They landed next to the bottle of lube. Jamie grinned at me and rose up on his hands and knees. I had to squeeze my dick again or I was going to be shooting my load on the bedding.
