  The registrar greeted Sam with a warm smile and she almost forgot to stop walking, so Gemma gently tugged her. Sam laughed coyly, then handed her posy of roses to Gemma.

  Sam placed her bare feet on the sand, opposite her man.

  “Hi,” she said.

  “Hello, baby. You look awesome.”

  She chuckled. “Thank you.”

  The registrar intercepted the small talk. “Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, we are gathered here today on this beach to celebrate the union of Sam and Verlaine. Have you got the rings, please, Paul?”

  “Yeah.” Paul passed them over.

  It was Verlaine’s turn first. He held Sam’s hand and slid the wedding band halfway over her finger, on top of her engagement ring. They’d spent hours writing their own vows, allowing themselves to use humour and romance. Sam was looking forward to hearing what he’d come up with.

  “Sam, I’m so proud to take you as my wife. I’ve loved you since the day we met and I’ll continue to love you forever. You’re like the sunshine, pouring your beautiful warmth over me; forever in my heart. You bring out the best in me, and I promise to always bring you tea in bed each morning, to remove spiders from the house without killing them, and to accept that you’re not fascinated by the inner working of the internal combustion engine!”

  Sam giggled, trying to suppress her tears. She heard the others laugh kindly, too, but she focused her love on Verlaine’s beautiful brown eyes. He opened his mouth and continued.

  “I know there may be turbulent times as in any relationship, but I promise to be respectful of you and your unique talents. I will always strive to do the best I can for you. I will do everything I can to help you accomplish your dreams, because when you smile – when you’re happy – there’s nothing better in my world. Together we’re stronger, and I will always love you.”

  Sam wiped away a stray tear, not wanting to ruin her make-up, which Scott had taken so much time over this morning.

  The registrar asked Sam to take Verlaine’s ring. She picked it up with shaking hands and lowered it onto his finger.

  “Verlaine, I’m proud to take you as my husband. Meeting you has transformed my life forever – you contribute to me each day with love and happiness, and I hope I do the same for you. We’ve already been on some amazing adventures, and I know there are plenty ahead, from paying the bills to striving for world peace! Knowing that you’re with me makes me a stronger person, and I love you. I vow to never try to cook like your mother, but to always encourage us to try new and exciting things, and I promise to always respect you and your happiness, until the end of time. You make loving you such a joy, and I thank you for loving me the way you do.”

  They smiled into each other’s eyes. Sam’s heart filled with overwhelming elation as she gazed into pure love.

  The registrar spoke. “You may seal your vows with a kiss.”

  Sam grinned. She threw her arms around her husband to the sound of their friends’ applause, then she kissed him passionately, knowing that whatever new adventures lay before her, Verlaine would be there, making her happy, and giving her love.

  There was a time, not so long ago, when all I wanted was to stop my heart pounding hard and my mind surging with fear. You see, I suffered with panic attacks. The fear debilitated me on a daily basis, and the feelings of weakness undermined my self-esteem. This ‘fear of fear’ became so immense that there were times when I was scared to even go outside of my home.

  At those times, all I wanted to do was write, because my imaginary world of fiction provided a soothing escape from reality. The strong female characters I created allowed me to pretend everything was okay in my world. And the sexy men in my fictive imagination were protective, loving, and strong.

  I’ve never been someone to give up! Even at my lowest, I knew I could and would recover. Thanks to a great support network, a wonderful self-help book (The Panic Attacks Workbook by David Carbonell), and my own patient determination, I experienced my last ever panic attack in January 2013. Then, in April 2014, I proved how strong I’d become by backpacking with a friend in the chaos and heat of India – something that had filled me with dread back when my fear was dominating my every waking breath.

  But nothing in this life is ever a waste. During the years when I was suffering from panic attacks, I learnt to write well! I honed my craft, and when I came out the other end, I was ready to self-publish, knowing that if I can cope with panic attacks and survive, then I can become a successful indie author, too! My books are the products of this amazing journey that I’ve been on, and now I can’t wait to find out what other delights await me, just around the corner!
