“I’m going,” he finally stammered when the silence was too long to bear. Lana slowly unwound her arms from around his neck and stepped back. She tried to steal her face against the hurt, but it was obvious how his words devastated her. “I’m going, but you’re welcome to come, if you want. I could always use more help.”
A slow smile spread across her face once his words sunk in. “So that’s all I would be? A help? A poorly trained nurse who faints at the sight of blood?”
“You don’t faint, even if you don’t like it. I remember once, I cut myself falling off Mr. Thom’s trampoline. That damn thing was a death trap.”
“I know. Your mom freaked out. She had to take you to the hospital for a tetanus shot since the springs were so rusty.”
“So, are you coming?” Cam waited, almost dreading her answer. He knew that it was no life for her. It was rough living in a small hut with mosquitoes and unending heat. It was hard to even eke out the barest necessities of living.
Lana considered him for a second. Her eyes flicked over his face. Finally, she laughed. “Don’t you need vaccines and stuff? Before you go? I’d need some time to prepare.”
That irrational flicker of hope that had started in his chest burst to life. The flame was so bright, so intense, it nearly consumed him.
“Yes. You’re right. I have to go today, but if you’re serious, I could help you get ready. I would tell you what to bring, what shots to get. I would look after you, Lana, so your parents didn’t worry. I promise I would keep you safe. I would pay you too, so you’d have a job.”
“And then what? What about when you get tired of me and want to send me packing?”
“That would never happen.”
“Right. I forgot. You’re the one who packs and leaves.”
“That will never happen again either. I promise I’ll be there. I’ll be at your side. I’ll walk through anything with you. I’ll listen to everything you have to say. You have no idea how much I’ve always valued your input and your opinion.”
“And my touch apparently.”
“Your touch most of all.” He couldn’t keep the huskiness out of his voice. He watched awareness flare to life in Lana’s eyes and his own body responded violently. “The only thing I ask is that you do it quickly. Get ready and come. I can’t stand any more time without you.”
“And I want you in my life. As my best friend, as my lover, as my partner. It might have taken me twenty-five years to get it straight, but now that I know, I won’t forget anytime soon. No one is you, Cam. No one has ever been you. I think you were the one I wanted the entire time, I just didn’t realize it until Christmas.”
“So you’ll come then? You’ll come and help me change the world?”
“Yes.” Lana slipped her hand into his. She gave him that smile, that smile that she reserved only for him as her confidant, her co-conspirator, her best friend and now, her lover. “Yes, I’ll come with you. If you’ll still have me.”
“I’ll do more than have you.” It was a promise, heady and loaded with meaning.
Cam wrapped his arm around her waist and tugged her close. He wasn’t gentle, but she went willingly. Her hands hit his chest to brace herself against the onslaught of emotion he poured into his kiss.
When he let her go, they were both breathless.
“I better go. I’m going to miss my flight.”
Lana slowly nodded. “Alright. I’ll be counting down the days.”
“As will I.” His heart felt so full he could stand the pain of leaving. Only because he knew she was coming back, coming to him. She was finally going to be at his side, where she’d always belonged.
“I can’t wait,” Lana whispered before she stepped forward and sealed her words with another long kiss.
