As I let myself into the house after the school run, I thought about my conversation with Annie the night before. I’d had a little cry in my room and was just wiping away the last residue of my breakdown from my face, when my daughter came barging in.

“Mum, you have to call Dex,” she cried, flopping down onto the bed. “Sort things out.”

I turned my head on my pillow to face her – she was lying on her side, hands together under her cheek.

  “It’s not that simple, love.”

“Yes it is,” she protested. “You like him, he likes you. You’re crying because you stuffed up, so just bloody call him.”

“I didn’t stuff up. I told him that I didn’t like him telling you off, and he said he didn’t agree and we couldn’t move on from that.”

She looked at me and her dark blonde hair, in a tangled knot on top of her head, bobbed as she widened her eyes. “Really that’s how it happened?”

  “Yes,” I replied, petulantly.

“Well you’re more stupid than I thought,” she huffed.

  “Annie.”

“Mother,” she replied in a warning tone. “I’m being serious, if that’s why you finished with him then I’m never asking you for relationship advice ever again – because let’s face it, you suck at it.”

“I don’t,” I cried. “Dex said he would do it again and I’m not comfortable with that. What’s wrong with that?”

“What’s wrong with it, is that he was right,” Annie said, grabbing my shoulder. “I was rude to you and embarrassed you in front of your hot old man. I shouldn’t have said those things.”

“Why because they weren’t true?” I asked, with a watery smile.

  Annie shrugged, her lips twitching.

“Well some of it was…but,” she emphasized, holding up a finger. “I know you don’t really have your favorites. You’re a great mum and I was being rude, saying those things.”

I sat up and stared at her, peering closely.

“Where’s my Annie and what have you done with her?”

“Mum,” she groaned. “I can be grown up when I need to be. I just find acting like a spoiled Princess generally gets me what I want.

I shook my head, wishing that sometimes I hadn’t encouraged my children to be so outspoken or full of sass.

“Seriously Annie, this isn’t funny. Has someone drugged you?”

She rolled her eyes and scrambled off the bed. “Mum, just call him and make up. I like him, the boys like him, I think Nana might even fancy him, but more importantly, you like him. He likes you and he’s made you happier than I’ve seen you in years, so sort it out. And for the record, I really don’t mind him telling me to ‘cut you a break’,” she said, doing a decent impression of Dex’s Texan drawl. “Because not only does he sound like someone from a Hollywood film, but he’s looking out for you.”

With that, she left, and I spent the night and most of this morning, pondering on what she’d said. I knew she was right. He did make me happy and if the kids were okay with him saying what he did, should I really hold it against him? Maybe we should try and reach a compromise.

So, without even making it two steps into the hall, I quickly turned around and got into my car, turned the key and…it wouldn’t bloody start.

  Dex

When I pulled up outside Katie’s house, I could see she was sitting in her car, and once I got out and walked up the drive, I could hear her trying to get the piece of crap started.

Moving alongside it, I tapped on the roof. Katie’s door opened and she poked her head out.

  “Dex,” she gasped.

She didn’t look mad at me being there, in fact, her eyes were shining and she had a faint glimmer of a smile.

“Sounds like a flat battery,” I said. “Did Barry not get you a new one?”

Katie shook her head and I made a note to tear him a new ass hole, seeing as I’d asked him to make sure every aspect of the car was okay.

“I think he mentioned it,” Katie said, looking at me warily. “But I said no.”

I nodded. “Okay, I’ll give you a jump start, but I’ll need to push it down on to the road next to mine.”

She nodded and chewed on her lip.

“Want me to do it now or can we talk first?” I asked.

“Talk.” Katie’s voice was barely above a whisper, but her agreeing to talk was as good as her shouting it from the rooftops, as far as I was concerned.

She slammed the car door closed and walked to the house with me following. We then walked to the kitchen in silence, but the crackle in the atmosphere kinda gave it away that we both had something to say – it was a case of who was going to have their say first.

Turned out it was Katie. She threw her bag on the table and had barely turned to face me when she spoke.

  “I’m sorry, Dex. I overreacted.”

Her bottom lip trembled as wide, pale blue eyes, pleaded with me.

“Fuck, Katie,” I breathed out, pulling her into my arms. “I’m so damn sorry. I should have kept my big mouth shut.”

I leaned in and kissed her, nothing too demanding, but hard enough that she knew I was damn well there.

“I’ve had a shit two days,” I said, pulling away from her, “thinking we were over.”

Then it struck me, she might have said she’d over reacted, but she’d never said we weren’t over.

  “Or are we?” I asked.

Katie shook her head. “No. As long you don’t want to be.”

  “No. No way.”

“I didn’t know it would feel so strange, someone else telling my kids what to do.”

“That wasn’t my intention, I swear. I just didn’t like…well you know why I said it.”

Katie sighed and wrapped her arms around my waist, cheek against my chest.

“I know and Annie told me I should be glad that you cared enough to say it. I’m still not sure I’m totally comfortable with it,” she said, giving me a squeeze.

“Hey, I’m not ever gonna lay down the law with your kids, no matter how far this goes.” I wagged a finger between us. “They’re your and Carl’s kids, you’re the ones who should do that, but I won’t see anyone disrespect you, Katie Cat.”

She looked up at me through her dark blonde lashes, which today were without makeup, yet still looked long and thick.

“I know and I really like that you’re such a gentleman.”

“I’d say the same to anyone and that includes anyone who disrespects your kids too. I won’t have anyone throwing shade at anyone I care about.”

I felt Katie’s chest hitch and her arms grew tighter around me, and God it felt good.

“I’m probably gonna take a while to get this right,” I said. “Never had a relationship with kids involved and never had any of my own, so I won’t always get it right, darlin’.”

“Just carry on doing what you’re doing and we’ll work the rest out between us.” She stood on tiptoe and kissed me softly. “And just so you know, my kids like you and my mum bloody loves you.”

I chuckled, thinking back to Katie’s mom, D’reen, flirting with me before things went to shit.

“Well I kinda have a soft spot for her too.”

“Oh don’t tell her that,” Katie groaned. “She’s already vain enough as it is.”

“I’m kinda thinking I might ask her out, if things don’t work out with me and you.”

Katie smacked at my chest, but then pulled me closer.

“God, I missed you,” she said on a long sigh.

“Yeah, missed you too, Katie Cat,” I replied and kissed her long and hard.

“Oh my God, Dex,” Katie cried, as I pushed inside her. “I’m going to cum.”

I thrust once more and this time when I pulled out, I flipped her over and pulled her ass up before pushing back inside her.

“Fucking love taking you in this position,” I growled, as Katie let out a long pleasured moan.

  “That’s so good.”

I know, darlin’.”

And it damn well was; real fucking good. I just wanted to lose myself in her every single second of every single day. We fit together, we were in tune with each other’s movements. We were perfect for each other.

  “I’m…oh God.”

Katie’s body started to tremble as her glorious pussy tightened around me, forcing me over the edge. As I came, I reached for her nipple and squeezed it, taking Katie with me.

“Katie, shit,” I cried, grabbing her hips and pumping faster, eking out the very last of my orgasm.

Pushing one last time, I groaned and emptied my last.

“Oh, my…” Katie gasped, flattening herself against the mattress. “That was amazing.”

“Every damn time, darlin’.” I replied breathing heavily. “Every single time.”

“I take it we’re friends again.” Katie reached for me and pulled my hand to her lips, kissing the palm.

Putting a hand on her shoulder, I gently pushed her onto her back and then pulled her against my side, putting an arm around her and kissing her temple.

“What time do you pick Charlie up?” I asked.

Katie giggled. “Quarter past three, so we have plenty of time.”

“Wasn’t thinking that,” I said against her hair. “Was thinking I need to get your car going. But, now you mention it.”

I kissed Katie again, only leaving her mouth alone once I’d heard her contented sigh.

We were back to being good and I couldn’t be happier – in fact, I don’t think I ever had been.

  Katie

“Seriously, Dex,” I said, clutching his hand. “I’m not sure this is a good idea. Which teenager wants to spend a night out with his mother and her boyfriend?”

“He works for me, darlin’, we do nights like this pretty regular, so he’ll have to get used to it.”

Dex and his staff were having a night out, and he’d invited me along, which was great, but Isaac was going to be there. He’d seemed okay about it when I’d mentioned I was tagging along, but I couldn’t help but notice how his eyes went wide and his mouth gaped open, even if it was momentarily.

“If he seems uncomfortable, then I’ll just stay for one drink.”

Dex pulled me to a stop just inside the doorway. “Not happening, he gets used to it. Now gimme those lips, because the only thing I promise to do is not embarrass him by kissing you all night, so make it a good one.”

He smiled against my mouth and gripped my waist and suddenly my anxiousness disappeared.

We’d been in the bar for a couple of hours and everything was going well. All Dex’s staff were great and had welcomed me with open arms, even Isaac seemed relaxed about it all. I had noticed though that when Scarlett had excused herself to go to the loo, Isaac had also needed to go a couple of minutes later, reappearing seconds after Scarlett. The normal nosey mother in me had to hold back from asking him whether there was something going on, deciding I’d force myself to leave it until he told me of his own accord. Simply deciding to do that made me feel proud, because every bone in my body needed to ask him, and then go and sit with Scarlett and have her fill in a questionnaire of suitability for my gorgeous boy.

“I see Scarlett and Isaac have synchronized bladder issues tonight,” I whispered to Dex.

“You noticed that? Yeah, I think we have a budding romance on our hands.” He grinned at me. “You okay about it?”

“I know he’s not a virgin. The amount of condoms he goes through is proof of that. I just don’t want it to be awkward for you if it all goes wrong. I love him, he’s my son and I’ve always taught him to respect women, but I have a feeling he’s a bit of a one night stand kind of boy.”

“Maybe,” Dex said, nodding sagely. “But Scarlett’s a couple of years older than him, and she’s pretty feisty, so I wouldn’t worry, she can look after herself. As long as they don’t bring any shit to my studio, I’m good with it.”

“She better not break his heart,” I said, snapping my eyes to their two empty seats.

“If either of them breaks the other’s heart, they’ll get over it. They’re young and having fun; having sex in dark corners of bars because they don’t want his mom to see.”

“Oh my God,” I gasped, bringing everyone’s attention to me. I smiled at them and then turned back to whisper close to Dex’s ear. “You really think they’ve been having sex while I’ve been sitting here?”

He grinned and shook his head in disbelief at the fact I hadn’t realized. “His hair is suddenly a little messier, he has a huge fucking grin on his face and Scarlett keeps shifting in her seat. Oh and I think I saw a pair of red panties sticking out of the pocket on his jeans, so yeah darlin’, I think they might have been having sex while you’ve been sitting here.”

My head shot around to see Scarlett sitting back down and I noticed how flushed her face was and that she was folding her tight pencil skirt carefully around her legs.

“They’ve gone missing three times in the last two hours,” I hissed.

“He’s nineteen, darlin’, I’m guessing he’ll go another couple of rounds before the night is over.”

As my mouth dropped open, Dex began to laugh, pulling me in for a side hug and kissing my temple. “The stamina of youth darlin’, the stamina of fucking youth.”

Reaching for my drink, I noticed Isaac walking back to the table, looking less than happy. Surely Scarlett hadn’t dumped him already – they’d only just had sex, possibly three bloody times.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him as he sat down, next to Scarlett.

Scarlett laid a hand on his knee and looked at him with an expression of worry.

  “What’s happened?” she asked.

I heaved a little sigh of relief that there wasn’t going to be any drama with them at least.

“Bloody Sophie Tit Wank is here,” he hissed, leaning closer to me. “She’s going to come over when she’s got her drink.”

“Who is Sophie whatever wank?” Scarlett asked, her head swiveling to look around the bar. “Is she an ex or something?”

Isaac smiled softly at her and I knew instantly Scarlett wasn’t going to be another of his one night stands. My boy really liked her, and by her reaction, I think she really liked my boy.

  “No, my bloody step-mother, she’s a-.”

Scarlett’s shoulders relaxed – yep, she liked him.

“Hey buddy,” Dex said with authority. “Don’t finish that sentence and you know I think that name you give her is pretty shitty.”

I glanced at him, wishing I didn’t feel bitter at him for sticking up for Sophie. I knew deep down, it was simply Dex’s inbred need for respect, but it still pinched a little that it was for her.

As if reading my mind, he leaned in and said. “You know how I feel about disrespect, Katie Cat, and I’m telling him as his boss, not your boyfriend.”

I chewed on my lip and nodded. He was right and I also knew I was partly to blame for Isaac’s attitude to Sophie. I’d never chastised him when he gave her the nickname he had, I’d only ever stopped the kids using it half-heartedly and sometimes laughing when they did – I’d even used it myself. I had dual standards, boasting how I’d taught my boys to respect women, yet let them disrespect their step-mother. I knew all that and I agreed with it all, yet still deep down I liked the fact that they had a less than pleasant nickname for her. I thought it was funny and hated that Dex didn’t.

“Is she with your dad?” I asked, turning back to Isaac.

“No, with her friends and she’s drunk.”

I nodded and sighed, sitting back in my seat to wait for Sophie’s arrival at my table. I’d been feeling great, having a nice time, but now I felt uncomfortable and…shit to top it all off, I was starting to have a hot sweat.

As the heat started to rise from the swirling sensation in my stomach, I stood up. “Just nipping to the loo,” I told Dex, flashing him a smile before rushing off.

I knew he’d seen me have a couple of flushes
before, but his staff hadn’t and I certainly didn’t want Sophie to see me all hot and sweaty.

Pushing into the ladies’ bathroom, I reached into my bag for the small hand held fan I’d bought a few days earlier. Turning it on, I leaned against the wall and basked in the joy of the tiny bit of cool air that it provided. I pulled at the neck of my top and directed the fan to my boobs, where the river of sweat was running, and wiped a hand along the back of my neck, under my hair, swiping at the wetness.

“I fucking hate this,” I grumbled to myself as I pushed off the wall and reached for some paper towels that were in a rattan basket next to the sink.

I spent a couple of minutes wiping myself down, thankful that no one else had come in to witness my shame. This was a pretty trendy bar and I doubted there were many women in there who were my age and going through the stupid bloody menopause.

Once the flush had subsided and I was feeling a little less damp, I reapplied my lipstick and some more blusher to the places where it had been wiped off, and left to go back to the table. I’d only been gone about ten minutes, but I was worried about sitting back down thinking everyone would probably think I’d been for a poo. Dex, however, would probably think I was trying to avoid Sophie. He wouldn’t be totally wrong if he did – I didn’t particularly want to see her, but especially not sweating like a horse.

As I rounded the corner back into the main bar area, my steps faltered. I hadn’t avoided Sophie, because she was sitting in my chair, with her hands on Dex’s thigh, leaning into him and giggling like a teenage girl.

I immediately saw red and anger swelled up inside of me. How the hell dare she touch my boyfriend like that? She’d had my fucking husband and now wanted the only other man I’d thought I could see myself growing old with.

As I watched Dex laugh at something she said, I felt my cheeks burn with humiliation. How could he, in front of my son, just because my back was turned. I glanced at Isaac who had his back turned against them and was leaning across Scarlett to talk to Jethro. Even he wasn’t bothering to put a stop to it.
