He expected yelling. Shouts. Happy, hysterical tears. Not dead silence.
Scarlett hit the carpeted floor with a thump. Her legs had gone out from under her. “Do you know what the prize is this week? Fifty million dollars. That’s, what, five million dollars each?”
“Four and change,” Freddy said. “There are twelve of us. Andie wrote all our names on the ticket when she bought it.”
He’d forgotten. Doug flipped the narrow sheet and saw the names printed on the reverse. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Who’s going to double-check the winning numbers?”
They checked the numbers again, this time on the lotto’s website using Evelyn’s laptop. Then Cameron and Freddy took a field trip to the gas station. Freddy live-streamed the drive, including a long, in-depth focus on the posted, winning numbers. Scarlett texted Noah, Kirby and Jonathan, ordering them to Evelyn’s immediately. She accepted no excuses.

BONUS: DUTCH CINNAMON COFFEE CAKE RECIPE
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp baking soda
¼ cup butter or margarine
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 ½ cups flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
¼ cup brown sugar and 1 tbsp cinnamon – set aside
In a separate bowl, sprinkle baking soda over sour cream and mix well. Let rest for five minutes. It will double or triple in size.
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, baking soda and sour cream. Add flour, baking powder, and vanilla.
Pour half the batter into a greased pan (9”x9”). Sprinkle half the cinnamon and sugar mixture over batter. Add the rest of the batter. Sprinkle the rest of the cinnamon and sugar mixture over the top.
Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.
Elle’s Notes:
If using a Bundt pan, sprinkle some of the cinnamon sugar mixture in the base of the pan and add the rest to the middle.
This cake freezes wonderfully, and thaws quickly if you need to pull it out for unexpected Christmas company.
