“It’s beautiful,” I hush. I reach out to touch it with my fingers. “Shadi, what’s this?”
“It’s snow,” he says. “They get it in colder places this time of year.”
“Ah! It’s cold!” I scream as the snow touches my skin and do a little dance.
The citizens of Haya-Maa have no idea what’s going on. They begin running around screaming, shouting that Alshams has cursed us and that the sun god has decided to take away our warmth and punish us with cold.
“You insolent fool! You’ve ended up causing a panic!” Zahid whispers harshly under his breath.
“Ah!” Shadi screams. “It’s all right everyone, remain calm, it’s merely water!”
The children figure out the snow is harmless first and begin playing in it. Once everyone realizes the snow is just a part of the weather, they ooh and ahh at the gorgeous sight, before many realize that it’s freezing and hurry up to go back inside.
The snow has coated Zahid’s hair and eyelashes. With all the pandemonium, and the magic, no one is paying attention to us.
That is how it should be. He and I, we’re our own little world. And that’s all that truly matters.
“I love you, Bennua.” Zahid places a tender kiss to my forehead. “Merry Tajdid Alnaar.”
“I love you too, Zahid.” I nuzzle against his chest. “And a very merry Tajdid Alnaar to you.”
The snow sweeps around us and that old, familiar darkness inside my chest lessens… not completely, but just a little bit. Zahid is right; in time, things will get better.
Despite all the mishaps, it really did turn out to be the best Tajdid Alnaar ever.
