  The next two years dragged. Sam rode Pixie often, but her lone rides weren’t satisfying. With Rusty at her heels she often rode to the place by the river that was her and Mac’s special spot. There she would flop down beneath their gum tree and read and re-read his letters until melancholy engulfed her.

  He passed every exam with high marks and she was so proud of him she was fit to burst. A few local boys wanted to take her out, but she always refused. Only later did she realize a large part of her adolescence flew past with no real experiences of normal teenage behavior.
