Marcus covered the room in four quick strides. Lilly’s stomach clenched as she fell into step behind her husband. The poor man had been uncharacteristically quiet since Miss Donaghue entered. That must be a sign his worry for Claire still lingered.

By the time Lilly entered the bed chamber, Marcus was already by Claire’s side, hovering close as they talked. With Bryan on the opposite side of the bed, the two men looked like twin palace guards.

Lilly bit back a smile as she sidled next to Marcus and leaned over to see the baby bundled in Claire’s arms. “Oh…” She could only breathe the word.

The infant’s features were even smaller than she’d expected. She had Claire’s tiny china doll chin. And those eyes—even gray-blue, they held the same round intensity as her mother’s striking brown ones. Of course, Claire’s eyes had closed to half-mast as she reclined into the pillows.

“I’ll get you some tea and bread, Claire. I’m sure you need to eat before you rest.”

“Miriam went to get it.” Claire gave an exhausted half-smile, then she glanced over to peer at the commotion in the doorway.

Bryan had skirted the bed to grip his sister in a tight clutch, then held her back to examine her. “You look good, little bit. Come meet Claire and the new one.”

Lilly leaned into Marcus as they watched the introductions, and he slipped his hand around her waist, drawing her closer. Who would have thought two years ago she would be surrounded by so many friends, friends as dear as any family? God had blessed her with so many gifts. It turned out He was trustworthy after all.

Her gaze took in the babe again, resting with steady breaths in her mother’s arms.

One day, would that be Lilly in the bed holding their own babe? Marcus adored Dahlia, and the girl returned the sentiment, but Lilly wanted so much to give him a child of his own flesh and blood. A fourth to make their family complete.

Something prickled against the flesh of her neck, and Lilly’s gaze tracked up to see Marcus watching her. Those eyes. That off-kilter smile. He was so good at speaking volumes with only a single look. And this look held nothing but love.

  Love and a promise.
