  CHAPTER 1

  Dawna

I tap the steering wheel and sing along to my favorite song.

I’m on top of the world right now. I got a call at 3 a.m. this morning asking if I could be the opening act at The Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles tomorrow tonight.

It’s been a dream of mine since I first took the stage eight years ago as a naive sixteen year old. Technically I wasn’t even allowed in the club, but I borrowed the ID of one of the other girls in the foster home where I was staying and next thing I knew I was performing on open mic night.

Two of the other girls had helped me tie sheets together, and then they held the top of our makeshift “ladder” from the second floor window. Looking back it was crazy, but most comedians draw upon an assortment of crazy experiences, probably just like mine, in order to come up with their acts. That certainly applied to me.

Comedy was like therapy for me. My mom was a junkie prostitute and my dad, well…you can probably guess. As painful as it was a child it made for great humor now as an adult. I’m a firm believer in being positive and looking for the silver lining in everything, and as improbable as it seemed back then there was definitely a silver lining now.

I was still new when it came to the world of professional comedy, but the club owners said I showed promise. And I’d made a promise of my own this year…make enough money to stop crashing on friends’ couches and stop eating wish sandwiches. Wish sandwiches being than name I gave to my lettuce, tomato and bread sandwiches. They were wish sandwiches, because I sure did wish I had some meat for my sandwich.

But I didn’t mind. It was the price any new artist pays while they learn and perfect their craft. I was far from perfect, but I was sure hoping that tomorrow night’s performance in Hollywood would go a long way towards getting me in front of the right people.

I started driving immediately after the call came in. I packed up the same backpack I’d had as a kid and was off. It was one of the benefits of being able to fit everything you own in a backpack. On a whim you can be gone in sixty seconds, just as I was now.

And speaking of gone in sixty seconds, I noticed some smoke coming from underneath the hood just about a minute ago. It was slow at first, but now it was getting thicker, and darker, really fast.

I felt the car jerk and knew I was in deep trouble.

“Shoot!” I look right and see an exit sign. I throw the car in neutral and glide off the freeway.

I see a sign that says “Mack Massey Auto Repair.” Mack Massey…the name almost sounded superheroish and that’s exactly what I was going to need.

I have no clue what was suddenly wrong with my car, but I did know the $137.42 in my pocket likely wasn’t going to help get it fixed anytime soon.

  CHAPTER 2

  Mack

“Look what the cat dragged in,” Axel, my lead mechanic says.

I lean back, keeping my hand on the raised hood, and the other on the engine block as I take a look towards the lot. Texas is known for beautiful girls, but this girl is something else. She transcends beauty. She’s classy, sophisticated, and definitely not from around here.

I’ve been in El Paso my entire life and I’ve never seen a woman like this. Not now. Not ever.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and even though I know she’s not from around here she’s definitely got those childbearing hips. I can see them swaying as she hurries towards the door. Damn, she looks like a baby making machine.

I’ve never thought of children before. I’ve been married to this shop ever since I opened it ten years ago. I’d worked as a mechanic at other shops and when I finally saved up enough money to afford rent I started up my own. Times were tough then, and I got by by stuffing all the mailboxes in the area with cheap oil change offers.

Times were a lot better now. We still did oil changes, but we did a lot of the highe
r end stuff too, especially detailing, which pays top dollar. You get a couple celebrities coming through and you can pull in well over one hundred thousand off a single week’s work.

From the outside it looked like I had everything, and I did, except a woman. The best thing about keeping busy was I didn’t really have time to think about it, and I never cared…until right now.

This girl woke something primal inside me. That body of hers was calling me…telling me she was fertile and ready to start a family. All she needed was a man.

But not a man like me. I know those types. They look down their noses at guys like us. Guys who make a living doing things other guys can’t, or won’t. Those guys think because they sit in a fancy air-conditioned corner office all day typing on a computer that they’re better than me. Not a chance.

Sure, they may pull seven figures a year, but the second something goes wrong with their car, or something around the house, they call a guy like me. A real man who earns a living by the sweat of his brow, and the creativity needed to figure out how to fix things.

And what most people don’t know is that what I do pays well. Really well.

I wasn’t expected to amount to much when I was a kid and people still think I’m not successful, that I’m just some grease monkey turning a wrench. Little do they know this “grease money” could grease the palm of about anybody he wanted to these days. I’m too busy fixing cars to have any time to spend money, and my bank account has added another comma recently. And that’s not even including the value of my home and my car collection.

I’ve got it all…except the right woman. And by right, I mean perfect, and perfect is exactly how I’d describe her.

“I’ll see what she needs, boss,” Axel says.

“How about you take over for me on this engine,” I say, grabbing a rag from the cart and wiping my hands.

Axel’s worked for me for five years, and not once during that time have I not allowed him to wait on one of the single ladies. He’s young and stays fit between the time he spends working for me and working out at the gym down the street. And if his body wasn’t enough to make the ladies swoon, he’s a natural charmer too.

But not today. I’m not turning her over to anyone. I get the first, and last, crack at her.

The wind kicks up, blowing that white dress of hers a little too high. It doesn’t show too much, just a little of her leg above the knee cap, but it’s too much. I don’t want Axel looking and getting any ideas.

She’s closing in on the front door and I’m closing in on the counter. I can see now that she’s a really simple kind of girl. She looks innocent, and it’s not just that white dress. She has a way about her where I can tell she’s genuinely a nice person. She’s not one of these girls that come in in their Bentleys and Aston Martins and want to boss everyone around, including their husbands.

I don’t allow them to talk to me that way, not at all, and I can’t believe some of the supposed alpha males that come in here that do. With her, I can see that she doesn’t have a mean or demanding bone in her entire body, and I can’t wait to hear her voice.

“Good afternoon,” she says. Her voice is so soft and sweet, and it hits me right in the gut, causing my mouth to freeze up before it can even open.

“I’m really sorry to bother you, but I think something’s wrong with my car.”

I think something’s wrong with me right now. She’s got me off balance, and that never happens.

“I can take a look at it, personally.”

“That would be great,” she says, holding out the keys.

I reach for them, and she sets them in my hands. I never do this, but I make it a point to move my fingers upward, making contact with her wrist. It’s so delicate and feminine. She pauses, not releasing the keys at first.

I want to grab her right then and there and bend her over across the counter. I know Axel’s watching out back, and I’m not about to do anything that would be disrespectful to her, let alone I have no idea how she’d react.

“Your keys,” I say, and I feel their weight drop into my hand.

“Sorry. I’m a little out of it. Must be the heat, and the long drive.”

“Yeah, the heat,” I say, feeling the fire burn in my veins as I think of all the things I want to do to her right now.

“Where you from?” I ask, as I walk out the front noticing she’s right behind me. Most girls would have stayed inside in the air conditioning and let me figure out what the problem is. Not her.

There’s a bounce in her walk, and I can see her amazing breasts jiggle as she steps. Damn, she’s not making this any easier. I glance down and see my boner, which is now impossible to hide. That didn’t take long. Even through my underwear and these thick mechanic’s overalls it’s obvious. It wants to break free and it wants inside of her.

“I’m a good ol' southern girl,” she says.

“Just passing through?” I have to know how long she’s going to be here.

“Yeah, wasn’t even planning on stopping. My car here, well she had other ideas.”

“Funny how they seem to have a mind of their own sometimes.”

“Sure is,” she says. Just like my cock right about now, but he doesn’t have a mind of his own. My dick is in full agreement with my mind, it’s just that I can’t do this right now. She’s a good girl, maybe without any experience…ever.

It’s not like I’ve been burning up the sheets lately myself. I haven’t even been out on so much as a single date since my last one a couple years ago. We barely made it past the appetizers when I walked out. She mentioned we should go shopping before I’d even finished my first drink. I’d be more than happy to spoil the right girl, if I ever met her, but there’s no way I’m wasting my hard-earned cash on some gold digger.

I had two options…order a whole bunch more drinks and try and forget the night even happened, or just end it right then and there.

I don’t have time to get blasted from alcohol. I’m running a business and I need to be on top of my game, never more so than right now.

I look at the engine. “Well, I have some bad news and I have some good news.”

“Okay,” she says, and I can see she’s distraught. She said she didn’t even plan on stopping in El Paso, well then she’s sure not going to want to spend a night here.

  “Your engine’s blown. Completely gone.”

I see her grimace. “And the good news?”

“We can get you the same one. I’ll go pick it up myself and will work on it all night. You said you weren’t planning on stopping, so I’ll have you back on the road by this time tomorrow.”

“Do you have a bathroom?” she asks.

I think about telling her about the customer bathroom we keep around back, but there’s no way I’m sending her back there. We keep it clean as a whistle, but she deserves better.

“There’s one inside. Let me show you.”

“Thank you,” she says, and I catch a sparkle in her eye thinking it’s just a reflection off the glass in front of our shop, but I quickly realize it’s not. Her eyes are watering, and I know what’s coming next.

“Right over there,” I say, pointing towards the bathroom once we get back inside.

“Thanks,” she says. “I’ll try not to be too long.”

Immediately as the door shuts I hear a whimper and her best attempt at muffling the sound of crying.

My first reaction is to knock on the door, but that’s not what she really wants. She wants out of this town, pronto. It’s time to show this girl just how good I am at solving problems.

  CHAPTER 3

  Dawna

I put down the lid and sit on the toilet seat, my elbows on my knees and my hands in my face. I stand suddenly, lift the seat and dry heat into the bowl.

Things were going so well, and now I’m up a really bad creek with no paddle.

I was just a day’s drive away from realizing my dream and now here I am stuck in the middle of nowhere with no car, pr
actically no money, and nobody. It takes me back to my days growing up, but unlike those days I’m an adult now. There’s no safety net, not that there was much of one then, and no one here to solve my problems. I have to get tough and figure this out myself.

I hear a knock on the door. “Just a second,” I say. The mechanic guy was so nice, but I realize he’s running a business. He doesn’t have time for me to be tying up his bathroom while I wash my tears down the drain.

I make my way to the sink, splash some water on my face, and dry my face with a towel.

I look like a hot mess, but I don’t have much of a choice right now.

“Hi,” I say opening the door.
