  Bear Consumed was one of my all-time lowest earning books. I think I know more about marketing now. Having readers who put up with my eccentricities inspires bravery. I’m gambling part of my month’s income on a strange book that doesn’t stand a chance with werebear romance readers. Maybe I’m on a slow learning curve, or maybe I’m finding my audience and it’s all going to work out. I sacrificed just about everything in my life in California, including my car, to move to the Yucatan so I can keep writing fiction.

  I’ve been visiting Mayan ruins and I have the next two episodes of my new Mayan Apocalypse serial underway. Innocent Captive wasn’t a hit as a single, either. That undercut my excitement as I wrapped up my life in California and took off for Mexico to complete the serial. What’s life without risk?

  This is a healing trip in unexpected ways. It’s an amazing confidence booster to be alone among strangers, getting along in a different language and unfamiliar currency. Most wonderful of all, I’m exploring a new terrain and amazing history that extends from the ancient cultures of this land to the many different peoples who arrived and affected this place over time. What gets to my heart the most are my day to day interactions with contemporary Mayan people. The cab driver who told me about connections between the Mayan and English languages. The women in their hand-embroidered Sunday best. The shy grandmother greeting me between the trains at the outdoor Railroad Museum in Merida. One of my hosts giving me a private tour of his family’s farm and sharing his love and enthusiasm for his culture and the long history of connection with this land, its plants and its animals. These are experiences that break me open every day.

  I make attempts to control myself and steer my writing toward popular niches, but my heart is in a different place.

  My favorite books are naked. I get right in there, deep in my own darkness, and tell the truth about pain and lust. This kind of book isn’t for everyone.
