Chapter Eighteen
“Wolves! Get ready, you will go in first!” Jake shouts from the back of the group, I snarl and hold the wolves. They snap their teeth and jump around, my snarls only just hold them.
“GO!” Jakes half yell half howl meets my ears and I let out a battle howl, the wolves around me join in and we race towards the building my pack are meant to be in.
I think about my brother and I really hope he doesn’t get caught up in all this fighting, he may be my twin and meant to be an alpha but he was born the wrong coat colour. He shouldn’t be an alpha as he isn't willing to fight for anything; I’m the one that fights.
I shake that thought off as I see blurs surrounds us, wooden bullets fly from behind us and I know that Jake is covering us.
I jump at a gust of wind, it screams and stops blurring as my claws dig into its flesh. The vampire tries to bite me but I dodge and use my claws to rip out its throat.
I see wolves all around me attack the vampires, we can easily beat them and my spirits rise.
“Nat, go get the pack!” Jake shouts from across the field and I howl to let him know I heard him.
I race past the wolves and dodge the vampires as I get into the building, I follow the weak scent of my pack to the basement.
The scent of blood makes my nose wrinkle but I ignore it and shove myself into the locked door, it breaks and I roll over the stairs.
I jump up and shake myself, well that wasn’t a good idea, I roll my eyes at my stupidity.
Eyes meet mine and me huff, I hear a shuffle and turn my head to the right to see my mum who grabs the bars and beams at me.
“I knew you would come,” she says weakly.
I nod and walk to her cage, looking for something to break the lock with. I huff when I can not find anything, Mum looks at me and then to her lock before standing back so I can look closer at it.
I tilt my head and paw at the lock, it rattles and I cringe at the echo. I look to my wooden claws and nod to myself, it could just work.
I bring my paw up high and swing down hard and fast towards the lock, as the claws meet the lock it cracks and I yap in a victory.
“I’ll get the rest out, keep watch for us?” Mum asks as she climbs out of the cage. I nod and run to the stairs.
“You got lucky with that lock, it was faulty. I can’t get the rest out” Mum’s panicked tone meets my ears just as I feel a gust of wind.
I snarl and use my instincts to detect when the vampires are going to strike, I jump at the last second and the vampire falls short. I huff and wait as he jumps around me, I can hear my mum focusing on opening the cage and I let the wolf fully take over to give her some time.
I let my mind wander as I watch through my wolf. The vampire fakes a left but we jump to meet his right, we bite down on his arm and he hisses as he pulls away.
We jump at him while he is distracted, his eyes widen and I feel his fangs sink into my neck as I bite down on his throat. I yelp and pull away quickly and then my wolf gives me full control back. I realise my wolf can still feel the pain of the vampires bite and I curse myself for not listening to her. The vampire's body falls to the floor as his blood pours from his large wound.
I huff and turn to my pack, most are out and looking wearily at me while Percy and Mum help to get the others out.
A howl has my head tilted, I bark and wag my tail at the tones of victory in Jakes voice.
“Let’s get out of here” I hear Percy say and I nod, I stay at the front while Percy stays at the back of the pack to make sure everyone stays safe.
Once we are out of the house Jake runs towards us and hugs mum. I keep watching as the pack start to shift so we can go home.
Percy gives a bark and the pack start to run, I see Reece waiting for me but I stay behind to check everything is okay.
Just as the pack are out of site I feel a gust of wind at my back and I turn, not faster enough as the vampire pins me down and injects me with something. I howl to my pack just as my vision fades and my hearing becomes just ringing.
Chapter Nineteen
I groan as pain ignites in my veins, the force of it causing my heart to stutter. I try to make myself move but my body doesn’t respond to me, the darkness behind my eyes panics me and I wonder for a moment if I am dead.
My head pounds, my limbs feel heavy and I try to get my wolf to made the shift happen however she doesn’t respond to my calls.
“She’s waking up,” A male voice says from my right and my lip curls.
I force my eyes to pop open, bright lights assault me and I turn my head away from the direct light. My eyes try to close again and I sigh, pain in my chest makes the darkness swirl about me.
“Do the test while she isn’t fully awake” A panicked voice yells.
I look down and notice ties keeping me in place, a hint of fear and panic runs through my veins but I try to ignore the sense of doom.
“Clear,” The male says and I scream out, pain like I’ve never felt runs through my body and I buck to try and escape it. I bite down and realise my tongue was in my teeth, blood pools into my mouth and I start to choke.
Someone grabs my head and turns it to the left, the blood trickles from my mouth and I take in a gulp of air.
“That’s why she needs to be secure! I don’t want her dying before we complete the tests” A roar makes me want to cover my ears.
“Try again! This time without her biting anything”
The pain starts up again and I keep my head left, hoping that this will end soon. I feel myself slipping into my mind but I stop it if I fall I’m as good as dead.
I gasp as the pain becomes so strong it’s all I can think about, my wolf nowhere to help me and I feel so alone.
“Give her the silver!” A shout makes me panic, silver hurts like hell anyway but with whatever they are doing it will make the pain unbearable.
I cringe as I hear gunshots, people rush around me and I pull on the ties. I need to get out of here before the hunters get me.
Cries and screams meet my ears as I pull the first tie free, I focus all my energy on the second and pant as it starts to give way.
I cry out in frustration when the tie doesn’t break, I use my free arm to pull at the tie but it still won’t give up.
A gust of wind rushes through the door and I snarl, the thought of a vampire getting to me before I can get free spurs me on and the second tie breaks.
“Easy, it’s me” I hear Reece voice and feel him pull at the other ties which break easily with his strength.
His hands slide under my body and he picks me up, His eyes sparkle with red and I sigh. A purr escapes me as he cuddles me tighter.
“I’m never letting go of you, I nearly went crazy without you” He mutters before we speed out of the room.
I look around and see wolves fighting, some in their human form and some holding guns.
“What the hell did I miss” I roll my eyes.
“Here” Reece hands me his wrist and I tilt my head and at when I see the cut.
“Drink, your mum told me it will help you heal” He replies to my look.
I grab his wrist as he shifts my weight, I look at the blood and cringe. I feel like I’m in a trance as I put my mouth on the cut and suck gently, Blood slides down my throat and I feel my strength returning to me. My wolf snarls in my head and I smile.
“Thank you,” I say as he puts me down.
“Anytime” His laugh lights up his eyes and we walk hand in hand towards the door.
“Nat” I hear Ivan cry, I turn round to see him barrelling towards us.
I gasp as he jumps at me and we hug so tightly I feel my ribs about to pop. I look over his head and see Percy who nods to the door, I nod back and he lets the pack know we are going home.
Two wolves come and walk either side of me and Reece, I smile as I scent them. The wolves smile back at me and I sigh at finally being complete again.
“I never want to go through something like that again,” I say and
Reece nods into my hair.
“THIS ISN’T OVER WOLF!” I hear a bellow from the building and my eyes widen and the pack star to run, I jog and Reece stays slightly behind me.
I shiver and feel the wolf pushing my shift, with a grin I quickly let the shift happen. I jump to avoid my joints being damaged, the shift completing itself as I fly through the air.
I notice all the human form werewolves doing the same and we run as a pack.
Chapter Twenty
The pack house is quiet as we rush to our rooms so we can shift. I shift quickly as my curtain sway in the wind, my mind races as I rush to close the window. Thoughts of the pain nearly bring me to my knees but I shake myself off and pull on some clothes.
“Nat, you okay?” I hear my mum say from beyond my closed door.
“I think so” I mutter, knowing she can still hear me.
“I’m coming in” She replies and opens my door, my eyes fill with tears as she rushes to hug me.
I pull her close and take in her scent, shuddering that I could’ve lost her. She rubs gently circles on my back as droplets of tears turn into a little stream.
“We are safe” Mum mutters over and over, I try to pull myself together but the pain and the numbness push all my emotions out.
“I know, but it will never be over” I sob, Mum laughs slightly and hugs me closer.
“It will, we are the strongest pack around here,” she says as she pulls away from me.
She pulls out my unused suitcase and plops it onto my bed, I tilt my head as I watch her pull clothes from my wardrobe.
“We need to leave here, Percy has found us somewhere else to go” she mutters more to herself than me.
“Okay, I’ll pack don’t worry,” I say as I take the clothes from her and place them in the suitcase.
“Good, be ready in thirty minutes,” She says before rushing out of my room.
I sigh and shove all the rest of my clothes in, I look around my room and grab my pictures, I wrap them in a blanket and place them carefully into the case. The clock on my wall chimes and I close my eyes and take a deep breath.
This land has been ours since before I was born, now we have to leave due to hunters and vampires. What the hell happened to the world where we didn’t interact with anyone outside our pack? Why are we being targeted? And why can’t we just say here?
These questions circle my mind as I close up my case.
“You okay?” Reece’s voice breaks my thoughts and I look up to him.
“Yeah I’m fine, I think” My brow furrows.
“I’ll get your case” He smiles at me, I nod and he walks over to hug me.
I gasp as a tingling starts up in my body, his eyes glow red and I put my lips to his. The mate bond demanding to be completed.
I close my eyes as he deepens the kiss, all thoughts are lost as I focus on making my wolf happy.
“Whoa, chill out” I hear Jake say and I pull away from Reece.
“That mate bond is going to be the death of us” Reece laughs and I join in as he picks up my case.
A howl has my head tilting “Let’s go” Jake says and I nod while walking by Reece.
Car’s line our drive, my parents wave me over to the jeep and I jump in the back while Reece puts my case in the boot.
“This is a new beginning, we were overdue a move anyway” Mum smiles sadly, the look in her eyes tells me she is just as unhappy about the move as I am.
“As long as the pack is together it doesn’t matter” I declare in my most confident voice.
“Yeah” Mum mutters in reply and I turn my head away from her gaze.
I stare out the window as the Jeep pulls away from the only place I have ever known, Reece puts his arm around me and I sigh as the tingles start up again.
I put my head on his shoulder and watch the world pass us by.
It takes us three hours on the road to reach our new place, I growl when I see it. The place looks like it is about to fall down.
“It’s not much but it’s the only thing we could find at short notice” My dad grumbles before jumping out.
Percy joins us and I grin at him, his eyes glance towards my arm and I lift it to see the black spider-like veins still there. I raise an eyebrow to Reece but he shrugs.
“Maybe the pack need to have a run or something to make the bond again?” He mutters in my ear and I nod at him.
“Let’s go for a run!” I cry, all the wolves cheer in agreement and I laugh as Percy Jumps into the air, his shift completing so fast that if I had blinked I would have missed it.
The rest of the pack shift and I close my eyes as I let my wolf out, she pushes the shift more and the shift completes faster than it’s ever done before.
“You’re learning” Reece laughs and I huff at him.
I set off running, at least this place has some woods to run in I think to myself. I feel more than see Reece by my side, he is so close I can feel him brushing against my fur.
The pack fall in behind and around me, a feeling of pure bliss enters my soul and I lift my nose to the sky. The howl that pours from me has tones of pain and fear, the pack join me and we all howl out our emotions.
I switch the howl into one of love and the pack change too, the howl so haunting that I bet the whole world could hear it if we wanted them to.
“Nat your fur is changing back to white” Reece says as the howl cuts off.
I bark and wag my tail before lopping off to jump fallen logs.
Chapter Twenty one
“It’s time, your matting bond needs to be completed,” My mum says, I nod and walk towards Reece. I let the wolf see through my eyes and I feel she pushing towards him.
“I don’t know what to do,” He says, I shake my head and grab his arm. I close my eyes and let the wolf show him what to do.
He gasps then lets go of me. He shows his vampire side and we circle each other, I growl at him and he hisses. I can see the humour in his eyes as we perform the first stage of the bond.
I lift my hand up and he joins his hand to mine, I close my eyes and we slowly walk closer together. I hear a cheer and nearly lose my focus, Reece gently squeezes my hand and I open my eyes to see his fangs jutting out from his lip.
I nod and tilt my head, his eyes hold mine as he bites down on my neck. I turn my head so I can bite him too. I feel him nod and I let my fangs free, I bite down on his neck and blood drips into my throat.
I let go and let out a howl as the bond starts to open between us, Reece howls as well and I smile at how good he is.
I hug him and he smiles at me, our minds intertwine and I can hear what he is thinking. I know he can hear me too.
“What's the next stage?” He asks in our bond and I shake my head at him.
“Mating” I laugh at him when I see his eyes widen.
“Don’t worry, we don’t have to complete that part for a while” I mutter into his ear and he nods.
A cheer rings in my ears as the pack laugh and joke, I smile and I see Jake watching from a nearby tree.
He walks over to us and hugs us, my brother kisses my head then walks off to my parent's side.
“The food is ready” I hear Percy yell from the other side of the house.
I laugh and rush to the food, I feel Reece pick me up and he uses his speed to get us there first.
“Hey, no fair!” Ivan yells as he runs towards us.
“You snooze you lose!” Reece says and grabs me a plate.
I sit down on the grass and watch the pack as I take a bite out of the burger Percy made, Reece sits next to me and play with my hair. His eyes glow red and I laugh at him.
“I’m so glad I found you, I can’t believe it’s only been a few weeks. It feels like forever” He says.
“I’m glad I ran off and you found me, in this world everything seems to go fast however it’s just normal time” I reply with a smile lighting up my lights.
“Here is too forever,” He says and lifts his cup.
I grab mine
and gently hit his cup as he laughs. Jake and Ava sit next to us and I see Dar playing with one of the younger pups.
“He has grown so much,” I say, Ava, nods and nudges her food around.
“Wait where is his dad? Where's your mate, Ava?” I ask, her face tells me he either didn’t make it or someone has him locked up.
“He was taken away from us, I don’t know where” She replies tears rolling down her face.
“Did someone say, mate?” I hear Percy chime in, a man stands behind him and I gasp. Avas head snaps up when she catches his scent.
I smile and she cries out and launches herself at him, her mate smiles at her and he catches her.
They kiss and I look away, she giggles and they run off.
