“Crystal,” Lee called as I backed away with a look of disgust on my face.

I quickly turned and ran for the office. Kim was right on my heels following me. I needed to get as far away from Lee as possible. I felt like such a fool for the millionth time. How did I let him talk me into this? I had no idea what I was going to do.

Kim followed me into the office and closed the door behind her. I walked over to my desk and braced myself against it. I couldn’t even fight the tears because it only made me nauseous.

Kim moved closer to hand me some mouthwash from her desk. I rinsed my mouth, wishing I could make the bitter taste of reality go away as well. Kim wrapped her arms around me as I cried.

“Why now Kim? How did I let him get me pregnant? What was I thinking?” I whimpered.

“Oh, Crystal, you’re pregnant?” she squealed. “That’s great.”

“This isn’t great. How am I supposed to move on if I’m having his baby?”

“Move on? Girl, you need to stop trippin’.”

“I want to believe him, but I don’t know if that’s me just wanting to believe him or me knowing I should,” I cried. “They lived together. He slept with her. He told me once that he tried to make things work for LJ.”

“Lee didn’t get Rachael pregnant again. That’s not his baby,” Kim demanded.

“What makes you so sure about that?” I almost yelled at her.

“Because I know what you don’t know. Yes, Lee tried to do right by LJ. He tried to give Rachael a chance. That no good heifer violated him and his house,” Kim said through her teeth.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded.

“She had Sean up in his condo and he walked in on them,” Kim explained. “Lee and Sean got in a big fight. Lee was pissed. He knew that Sean had pushed him to get with Rachael and bad mouthed you the whole time so he could get at you. To top it off, Sean was up in his place with Rachael after everything that happened with you. Lee whipped Sean’s ass,” Kim laughed.

  “Are you serious?”

“Girl, Lee got locked up over it. He didn’t want you to know. The team kept it quiet. But that wasn’t it. Lee stopped messing with her and started telling her to find a place to stay.

“That’s when she started the disappearing acts. Telling him she had emergencies. The first time, she disappeared Lee called me all upset because he needed to get to practice. He didn’t have anyone to watch LJ. I told him I was on my way.

“I’d been at KG’s. He had let the guys have a groupie party the night before. We’d stayed locked upstairs most the night.

“When I left, I had to step over passed out bodies on my way out the door. Right before I got out of the house I saw Rachael’s naked behind passed out next to this guy KG just signed to the label. Bitch told Lee she had an emergency the night before. Some emergency.

“I told Lee as soon as I got to his place. Lee wouldn’t put a pinky next to her, let alone get her pregnant again. Lee can’t stand that girl. She’s seven months pregnant, Crystal…trust me that’s not Lee’s baby.”

  “Kim really?” I sniffled.

“Yes mommy. You need to go out there and get your man. Let him take care of you and that little baby in your tummy,” she chimed. “He loves you girl. Lee would never hurt you like that.”

I pulled Kim in for a hard embrace. I trusted her. I knew she would tell me the truth. She was the first person I called when Rachael showed up the first time. She understood how I felt about Lee and how much I loved him.

I thought about what Lee’s mother told me. I had to remember that I loved Lee when things got out of control. I took time to get myself together before going back outside.

Kim wrapped her arm around my waist, placing her head on my shoulder as we moved to leave the office. As she opened the door, Lee came into view. He stood in the threshold holding LJ in his arms.

  “Mommy,” LJ sang, “You tay?”

I kissed him on the cheek and laughed. His little face was filled with concern. His brows pinched looking just like his father.

“Yes, LJ, mommy is okay. She is just going to give you a little brother or sister,” I said as I looked at Lee.

Lee searched my face cautiously. I wrapped my arms around him and LJ as I lifted up to kiss him. His hand landed on the small of my back, lifting me into his kiss.

  “I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He shook his head at me, placing his forehead to mine. We remained silent for a few moments. I felt so ashamed for not trusting him. We still had a lot to learn, but I knew we could make it.

“I love you,” Lee moved to say into my ear as he rubbed my back. “Let’s go home.”

  Chapter 28

  Today

  Crystal

I pushed all thoughts of Rachael and her lies out of my head and started to live my life again. Lee was telling the truth and she just couldn’t stand the fact that Lee wanted to marry me while she couldn’t get a fifty-cent frank out of him.

We make a very successful power couple together. That’s what we both were looking for. I had to evaluate the best parts of Lee. There were more of those than there was drama.

I did like his mother warned me. I remembered why I loved him. When I found out I was pregnant I knew it was meant to be. Lee and I deserved to be happy. We deserved to have everything we dreamed of. Less than two weeks after that day in the shop, I became Mrs. Lee Johnson.

  Lee

Making me the happiest man in the world. She wasn’t just pregnant with my first daughter but she also gave me my second son. She always gives me more than I expect. As you can see, we’re expecting again.

See, I felt if I told you my story you would understand what awaits you out there. I love my wife and almost lost her and everything else because I lost focus for a single moment. The game will play you just as hard as you play it.

You young athletes have to stay focused if you want to survive and have a real life, not just the fantasy of the game and the life it provides. Crystal was what I needed to keep from losing myself to the game. Some of you will not be that lucky to know when you have it as good.

I just want to warn you not to make the mistakes I did. Having a real woman by my side helped me focus on the game and got me that championship in my third season. However, I have known what the wrong woman is like and how costly that can be.

Most of all, you should remember that not all advice is good advice. Not everyone giving it has your best interest in mind. I made the mistake of taking advice from someone that had none of the things I wanted, but wanted all of the things I had.

I hope Crystal and I said something that will help you stay focused and out of trouble. If not, I hope one of the other stories you hear will show you the truth about the life you’re entering. It’s great to enjoy the experience. Just make sure the experience isn’t taking the joy from you.

  Are there any questions?

  Acknowledgments

Star is an old love of mine. Some of you may have read the original. I laughed my way through rewrites. Good lord, have I grown. I still love Lee and Crystal though and I’m happy with the polish I was able to add to them. Hoping to add more to their collection in the future.

To my family. Yes, I’m talking to all of you as readers. Thank you for being you. Your love and support means the world to me. Your encouragement and emails mean the world. They are always right on time. Thank you for watching me grow and encouraging me to do so. I don’t take you for granted.

This book is for my mother. When she passed, I made her a promise. It took me a while to get back on my feet and see my way forward, but I’m making that promise come true. Mommy do you see me? Love you forever.

Many people talk that talk but won’t walk that walk when called to. Faith takes commitment to the journey. It requires pushing even when you no longer want to. But when you root yourself in faith it’s a beautiful thing. You remember what’s for you is for you. No one can take that away and God will make sure it is s
o. Thank you, Lord for wisdom and faith. May your will be so.

On to the Next!! Man, there are a million books in the works, stay tuned. LOL
