Father Found

by Judith Arnold

Yes, there’s a lady in my life now. Also a baby daughter, so I guess you could say there are two ladies in my life. One of the secrets of being a guy is, you can’t really indulge in guy stuff when there are ladies around.

Ladies are odd. My daughter—well, she’s about two months old now, and she’s got potential. For instance, she thinks belching is fun. Toilet humor is exactly her speed. And her idea of high-class entertainment is professional wrestling.

But the other lady, the woman I’m going to marry, expects me to be civilized.. She says there’s already one messy baby in the house, and one is quite enough, especially given that the other messy baby celebrated his thirtieth birthday a few months ago.

So the kid gets to do all the neat stuff—not just burping but throwing food, having a whiz whenever she wants, making obscene noises at inappropriate times. And meanwhile, I’m supposed to behave myself.

It’s been tough, but I’m working on it. One thing I’ve learned: it helps if you keep your sense of humor. That’s one thing my woman has done for me: she’s taught me that you can grow up and fall in love and still keep your sense of humor.

Like I said, it’s a whole new style of guy stuff. Watch this column: I’ll let you know how it goes. So far, I like it. I like it a lot.
