The Midas Trap

She drew Simon’s hand to her lips and kissed his knuckles.

“Not ready to decide?” he asked.

“No,” she murmured. Because the Temple was more than a potential excavation to her.

It was Michael’s grave and the death of her girlhood dreams. She’d thought her dreams of love and Michael had died when he betrayed her in Brazil. And when he’d pointed Lily at her in the Temple, she was sure that any micron of feeling for him was long gone.

She couldn’t have been more wrong. Her dreams only truly died with Michael’s passing and the hope he took with him.

Veronica pressed their joined hands to her chest. “Ask me again next year?”

“Deal,” he said with a smile. “I have infinite patience.”

She returned the grin, her heart lifting at his effortless acceptance of her request. “It’s easy to have patience when you know we have a copy of the codex and even though we don’t have the Eye, I’m guessing you can get your hands on enough explosives to blow open the door.”

  “Who? Me?”

His right brow arched upwards in what she considered a very unconvincing attempt to appear above question.

With a resigned sigh, she stood on her toes and kissed his mouth. “Thanks for understanding.”

“My pleasure,” Simon replied, moving to trap her between his torso and the wall. “Besides, I have something else in mind. I heard a rumor that a villager outside Cairo found evidence that the griffin was a real animal.”

She brought their joined hands up between them. “Really? The eagle-lion creature?”

  “Mmm-hmm.” He kissed her fingertips.

Her skin started to tingle, and her inner archaeologist snapped to attention. “What kind of evidence?”

“A feather or skeleton. Something like that,” he said, working his way over to the fleshy part of her palm where he began nibbling. Was he serious about the griffin? She couldn’t tell.

“Doing anything Saturday night?” he whispered.

And she realized she didn’t care. Going anyplace with Simon was bound to be an adventure. Smiling slyly, she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Going to Egypt. Wanna come?”
