“Well then, we will really need to do some talking if we’re going to make that happen.”

“Talk, talk, talk . . . when do we sleep?” I was out, not to waken for two days. Brick was gone and I had a slew of reporters and corporate lawyers lined up to see me. I could sit in a chair now with the help of an inflatable donut but it would be several more days before I would even attempt a plane ride back to my Dolphin.

When I finally got the purse I had left in the rental car back, I saw there was a message on my voicemail from a number I didn’t recognize. I punched in the codes to retrieve it.

“Jenny, this is Randy. The guy with the four kids and the harridan for a wife that you met in Las Cruces. One of my guys on the setup crew knows this Robert Byrne’s guy you’re looking for, so give me a call when you get a chance and for Heaven’s sake make it during the day, during the workweek. We’ve talked, and Charlotte’s getting better, but I’m still on a very short leash and you’re way too pretty by far for her to be comfortable with me talkin’ to you.”
