  Chapter 1

  Jax

Final Song by MØ blares through the speakers as I roll out dough for the doughnuts. It’s been a slow morning, thankfully, since a few people called in sick. Not to mention, I haven’t seen my business partner at all today. Movement to my left catches my attention, yet it isn't who I’ve been waiting for. Normally, CJ and I see each other at some point during the day, but the last two days, he’s been out of sight.

“Hey, Brad, have you seen your brother?” I ask, peering over my shoulder at him.

“Yes,” Brad draws out, coming toward me. “The dumbass pulled a muscle then decided to go meet up with y’all’s friends he plays football with and made the injury worse. Since you're asking questions, I take it he didn't call?”

“No, he didn't. Is he okay?” I stop kneading the dough I’m prepping.

“I have no idea. He's being a big baby, that's for sure,” he informs me.

“Really? Your brother's being a baby? Why do you say that?” I question, leaning my hip against the counter.

“Because he went to the doctor and got meds rather than sucking it up.”

Nothing I can say will change Brad’s mind, so I smack him upside his head, instead.

  “Ow, Jax. What’s that for?”

“You really need to ask? Maybe I need to smack you again?”

He takes a few steps back, holding up his hands. “No. No, you don't. You know you didn't need to hit me that hard!”

“All I did was tap you! Now who’s being a baby?”

Rubbing his head, he quips, “If you think that was a tap, you don't know your own strength. I’m going out front.”

Before getting back to the doughnut prep, I take off my gloves and pull my phone out of my pocket, sending a quick text off to CJ.

Jax: Since you’re laid up, you want me to grab some food and come hang out for a bit when I’m done?

I slide my phone back in my pocket, wash my hands, and pull on clean gloves. My phone buzzes with an incoming call as I pick up the doughnut cutter, and I quickly pull off my plastic gloves.

“Hey, Forest! What's up?” I ask, stepping away from the counter and heading toward the office.

There’s a long pause, and I check the phone to make sure I’m still connected when he finally begins, “So...I wanted to see what you were doing tonight?”

“After work, I was going to go see CJ. We haven't hung out in a while, and I think something’s going on with him.”

That’s an understatement, but I don’t think his pulled muscle is the only issue.

Entering the office, I close the door behind me and lean against our only desk.

“Oh...okay. Maybe we can do something next week.” he says, and I hear some kind of rustling in the background.

“Is there something you needed for Ella?” I ask, my voice changing in pitch. I don’t know what I’d do if something was wrong with Ella. She's the coolest little kid I’ve ever met.

“No! Ella's doing great. She's with my parents tonight, so I was going to see if you'd like to have dinner. Just the two of us,” he explains.

I stop dead in my tracks. Did Forest just ask me out? Heart racing, I’m not sure how to answer. Since the day Forest and Ella first walked in to Voodoo Doughnut, I’ve secretly crushed on him.

“Oh. I...uh….” I sputter. What the hell kind of a response was that? “You want to have dinner? With only me?” I confirm, getting my wits back.

“Yes!” he replies forcefully, and I do a little shimmy. “Sorry. I’m doing this all wrong.”

He sounds nervous, and it makes me smile. He’s always so cute when he gets flustered.

“Doing what all wrong?” I ask, holding in a giggle.

“Woman, you're going to make me spell it out, aren't you?” I can picture the playful grin on his bearded face.

  “Yes,” I tease.

Chuckling, he jumps right in. “Jax, I’d like to take you out on a date. If you and CJ don't go out tonight, would you like to have dinner with me? We can either go out, or I can cook.”

Biting my bottom lip, I contemplate saying yes right away, or making him suffer by waiting. Since CJ hasn't responded yet, I know I’m going to say yes, but I really like the idea of making him suffer a little bit. Plus, I need to wrap my head around the fact that he's ready to date. It's not something I was expecting anytime soon. Granted, he's had Ella for six months, but still...they're just now settling into their new plac
e and getting their routine down.

“How about I suggest something else?” I offer, crossing my fingers as this will be new territory for me when it comes Forest.

  “Okay, shoot.”

“How about you come over to my place, and I’ll make you dinner. I know it's not the same as you taking me out, but we bake at your place regularly. I’d like to do something here,” I explain, and hold my breath for his answer.

It takes Forest a minute before he responds. “That sounds like a great idea, actually. When you know you're not doing anything with CJ, why don't you text me your address? And let me know if you want me to bring anything to help with dinner.”

“Great. Let me talk to CJ, and I’ll get back to you shortly. Bye, Forest.”

  “Bye.”

Disconnecting, I do a little happy dance around the office until there's a knock at the door. The door squeaks as it opens, and I stop dead in my tracks.

“Jax,” Brad calls, “is everything okay?”

  “Yep, what's up?” I ask.

“A guy just walked in asking for all the doughnuts we have out in the case,” Brad explains, stepping in the office.

“Start boxing everything up. We’ll be behind for a bit, but thankfully, I have some that just need decorating.” Brad turns and walks out as I follow behind, texting CJ.

Jax: Forest just asked me out! I’m going to make dinner for tonight.

Sliding my phone into my back pocket once again, I head for the sink to wash my hands when my phone buzzes, and I check the messages.

CJ: Sorry I’ve been MIA the last few days. I’ve been dealing with some shit.

Jax: Brad told me a little.

CJ: He doesn’t know the half of it.

Jax: Sounds like we need to have lunch or dinner one night this week.

  CJ: Let’s do lunch tomorrow.

Jax: Deal. Now I need to make some doughnuts. Someone just bought everything we have out front.

  CJ: Are you shitting me?

Jax: Nope. Brad came back to tell me as I was getting off the phone with Forest.

CJ: Damn! All right, get to work and make us more money. Lol. Have fun tonight.

  Jax: Haha

A few of our bakers are finishing the doughnuts they are working on as I head to the front to see if Brad needs any help. Everything is already boxed up, and there’s a line of people loaded up with those boxes of doughnuts walking out the door.

“Did you get everything squared away?” I ask, coming to stand next to Brad.

“Yep. The guys are from one of the frat houses. I wasn’t going to ask what they wanted them for.”

“Probably a good idea. I can only imagine why they want that many doughnuts,” I respond before heading back into the kitchen.

Reaching for my phone, I pull it from my pocket and text Forest.

Jax: Dinner is on at my place. I’m at 305 Jackson Road #500. I’m on the 3rd floor of the Whiteman building. I have everything, so just bring yourself.
