She pulled away and looked at his face. “Who would hire him to do this? Why would anyone outside this ranch even care about a deal my father made with the ranch hands?”
“I don’t know. He just laughed and said this was just the beginning.”
“Who do you think he’s talking about?”
“It could be anyone.” He brushed her cheek with his knuckles and then bent his head and kissed her lips. “I want you in my life. You fill a part of me that I didn’t know needed filling.”
“I feel the same way.”
“Yeah? I’m falling in love with you, Carly. Even if all the danger ended tonight and I knew you’d be fine, I’d still want to be here. I don’t know what the future holds. I just know that I want you to be in it. I love having you like this in my arms. I love looking into your eyes and seeing something beautiful. You are so beautiful. I’m…I’m not falling in love with you. I am in love with you, Carly Duggan.”
Her heart swelled. “I feel the same way. You make me feel special, Jesse. I don’t want you to leave either. I don’t know what the future holds, but whatever lies ahead, I want you to be with me.”
He held her tight and for the first time since her father died, she felt as if she weren’t alone. What they felt for each other was still so new, but it had a promise for a beautiful future that Carly never thought was possible. Together they could figure out the rest. All Carly cared about as Jesse held her is that she finally felt at home again, in his arms.
