  “Please don’t get this bitch back in her feelings.” He fixed Rain’s dress and playfully dusted off her face.

  Rain ducked back and swatted at his hand. “Stop playing, boy.”

  “I’m just saying, hoe. You been acting a damn fool these past few days, and I know how people get when they’re in their feelings. Any sign of affection will have your ass crying, and I got enough problems of my own. I’m not here for that shit today.”

  Rain and Fallon laughed at how dramatic he was being.

  Fallon shook her head at Alex. “You are so crazy.”

  “He is.” Rain looked at her. “What you doing in there?”

  “Girl, I came out here with my sister-in-law and her man to get some food. They’re supposed to be grilling out today. Y’all should come.” She looked as if the idea had just popped into her head.

  Alex shook his head immediately. “Nah, I don’t think so. I don’t know them.”

  “They’re cool, Alex. You’ll like them. It’s just something to do. Jazz is at the house with her sister and kids right now. Us three just ran to the store to grab some meat.”

  “I’m good, but you can take your depressed ass sister-in-law if you want.”

  “Don’t pass me off like I’m some kind of charity case.”

  Alex shrugged and looked past Fallon and to the entrance of the store. “Rain, ain’t that Damien?” He pointed.

  Rain and Fallon both looked toward the door. “Yes, that’s him. Y’all know him?” Fallon asked.

  “Yeah, that’s Love’s friend,” Rain hurried to say. “They’re real tight.”

  Fallon looked shocked. “Oh wow. The world is small. That’s my sister-in-law’s man.”

  Now the mention of his woman piqued Rain and Alex’s attention. They had been trying to see this baby mama for a while now. Alex elbowed Rain discreetly when Damien stopped and grabbed the hand of the thick light-skinned girl that had just walked out of the store.

  “Let me go see if they’re okay with y’all coming. Y’all stay right here. I’ll be right back.” Fallon began to walk away. “Don’t leave.”

  They weren’t that far away from each other, so their voices could be heard clear as day. Rain could hear Fallon telling them about her and Alex. Damien mumbled something about he didn’t care, but she wasn’t surprised because he wasn’t paying them any attention. He was so busy on his phone he hadn’t even looked up yet. Rain was still being nosey, trying to hear what they were saying when she heard Fallon’s sister-in-law tell her she was cool, and would be more than happy to meet her brother and his friends. Though that was nice of her, Rain had no intentions of accepting her invitation. That was it. It was time to go.

  “Alex, let’s go. I don’t want to go over there.”

  “Why you ain’t just tell her that?” Alex was busy snapping pictures of Damien and his baby mama. “We could have just spoke and then left.” He was itching to be messy. It was all in his voice.

  “Just come on before she comes back.”

  “Come on, bitch, damn. I wanted Damien to see me.”

  Rain could hear Alex talking, but she was already halfway to his truck. When he noticed she was gone, he took off in a light jog and met her there. He hit the locks and they hopped in.

  “Let’s ride back by so he can see me. I’ll just tell her we ain’t coming.” Alex cranked up and was about to back out, but Rain grabbed his hand.

  “No. Just pull off.”

  Alex looked over at her and for the first time, he noticed how uncomfortable she looked.

  “What’s wrong with you?”

  “Damien’s baby mama…” She looked at him with fear in her eyes. “She’s the girl that attacked me.”
