CHAPTER ONE
“You bastard!” At this point I’m was screaming at him, while I grabbed my suitcase and started packing all of my clothes. “I can’t believe you would do this to me David! Nine years means nothing to you?” He didn’t answer which made me more pissed off. David was just sitting on the bed staring at me. Why couldn’t he just say something? Why couldn’t he get up and make me stop packing? So, I picked up a shoe and threw it at him. Of course he moved and it missed him. “Are you going to answer me? Are you going to explain to me why in the hell you would fuck your 20-year-old secretary? Is she the only one? Or did you sleep with all four secretaries you had in the past six years since you’ve became CEO at NicComputers?”
Over six years David and I have been married, he has gone through four secretaries. All of them were young, had light dirty blond hair, and were skinny. By no means am I skinny. I, on the other hand, am a plus sized woman with a round ass that can barely fit into size sixteen pants. My breasts are well rounded and they fit my body well, even though they aren’t huge by any means.
When David and I met, I was a little smaller than what I am now. We met while in college at University of California. I was going for business management and so was he. We were instantly attracted to each other. We dated for about three years before we got married. Marriage wasn’t my plan after college. My plan was to get my degree and go back to my home state, Louisiana, and open a business with my mother. However, when you find love, you will do anything to make it work and to stay with that person.
Love? Yeah right this wasn’t love. If he loved me, he wouldn’t have cheated on me.
“David, are you going to say anything? How many of them did you sleep with?” Finally he looked up at me with those big blue eyes. God, those eyes could do things to me. No, not anymore, I’m leaving and this is it!
He looked up at me and said “I’m sorry Amy. She was the only one. I didn’t mean for this to happen. The baby might not even be mine.”
“And how sure are you? You slept with her not once, but four times! God David, you slept with her four times and for all you know, she could have gotten pregnant the first time you slept her.” I walked toward our closet and grabbed a hand full of clothes.
“Amy, please don’t leave. We can work this out. We can fix this.”
I turned around to walk back to the bed with clothes falling out of my hands. “No David, I’m done. I spoke to Tiffany and I’m moving back to Louisiana. I won’t do this. You hurt me too bad.” I bent down to grab the clothes that fell out of my hands while thinking what in the world will I do when I get back to Louisiana? I know I have a place at Tiffany’s. She has always been there for me when I needed her the most. She and I have been friends for more than ten years and I know she understands me better than anyone else would.
I threw the clothes that were in my hands in my suitcase and walked over to the night stand to grab my purse. I already had most of my belongings in my car. Well, technically it’s not my car, it was his. He bought the house, the cars, the dog, the shoes, the clothes, everything.
I walked down the stairs with my suitcase in one hand and car keys in the other. There’s no turning back. This was it. He doesn’t love me. I was stupid enough to think he did. I could hear his footsteps behind me. I knew if I turned around, I would get sucked in by those damn eyes. Those eyes were what I love, no, loved the most about him. David is a good looking man with a pretty boy face, short blond hair, and lean toned muscles. He was really every girls dream.
He grabbed me by my arm and my suitcase fell out of my hands. “Amy, please stop. Please don’t go. We can work this out.”
I turned around to look at him. “It’s done David. The divorce papers are on the kitchen table. All you have to do is sign them. I don’t want to be with someone who doesn’t love me and cheats on me.” I pulled my arm out of his grip and grabbed my suitcase once again, and walked to the front door.
“Amy please! I don’t want this. I still love you. I will always love you!”
My hand was on the door handle. Before I turned the doorknob, I turned around one last time to look at him. “I’m sorry David but I don’t believe you do. You don’t love me.”
I walked out the front door and got in my car. His car. I turned the key in the ignition, put the car in reverse, and backed out of the driveway. This was for the better right? If he loved me he wouldn’t have cheated. He wouldn’t have slept with her twice. I know I don’t know the whole story. I don’t know who made the first move. All I know is, she is pregnant, and it could be his.
Before I left town, I stopped at our bank. I need to stop that. Our, what is ours anyways? He broke that. I walked into the bank and asked the lady at the front desk for Kim. She looked up from her computer screen and said “She is with someone at the moment. It will be a few minutes before she can see you.” I said “Thank” and walked to sit in the waiting area with my thoughts.
I met Kim when David and I opened our joint account. She’s the sweetest person I’ve met here in California and someone I could easily talk to. Kim was the one who gave me the heads up about David about three months ago. She invited me to lunch a few months ago. Which was normal for us, we would go to lunch a few times a month just to chat about life. Over the years we became good friends and she was my only friend in California. I could trust. Kim was telling me about the new job her younger cousin got at Nic Computers and that she kept going on and on about her new boss, which was David. So, I asked Kim more about it and all she would tell me is ‘I’m sure it’s nothing, but Amy, just keep a look out. You know how some men can be’.
I knew what she meant. Kim’s husband had cheated on her with someone he worked with. After our lunch, I decided to go visit David at work. Normally I would call him, but this time I thought I would surprise him. Nothing was going on that day, but something was off. I saw how he would look at the young secretary and how she would look at him. I know looks can mean nothing at times but can mean a hell of a lot at other times.
Then, this morning I walked in on David fucking the secretary in his expensive leather office chair. My eyes grew wide, my month was almost to the floor, and David peeked his head from around her tiny body. “Shit, Amy. It’s not…” David made her get off of him and she turned around. I could see that her small little stomach was poking out. I looked at him with disgust in my eyes and asked “Is she pregnant?” I waited for an answer, none. I turned around and placed my hand on the door handle. I turned my head to look at David with tears running down my eyes. “Next time, lock the door if you’re going to fuck someone in your office. When you get home the divorce papers will be on the kitchen counter.”r />
Kim walked over to me breaking my train of thought “Amy, what brings you in today?” I looked up at her and she saw my red puffy eyes “Oh Amy, what happened? Oh shit, you caught him didn’t you?” Kim is petite and short, a little shorter than me even with heels on. Her light brown hair was cut in a short bob and her big eyes are a bright green. Her little smile would brighten up anyone’s day but not mine at the moment. I opened my month to say yes but couldn’t. I looked into her eyes and whispered “I would like to clear out my savings, close my accounts, and empty my safe box.”
I stood and we both walked to her office. Kim walked around her desk and sat in her office chair and I sat in the chair in front of her desk. I took a deep breath and said “We’ve known each other for what? Five years now? And I can’t thank you enough for being there for him Kim. You really are a good friend.” Kim looked at me and smiled “You are a good person Amy, don’t let this ruin you. It’s David’s lost, not yours.” I smiled a fake smile “Thank you, but it’s hard. I’m leaving town and driving back to Louisiana so I need to close out my accounts and get the things out of my safe box.”
“Yes, of course. I can close out your savings and get your safe box for you, but the other accounts would have to be moved to another bank. There’s way too much money in there for one person to hold when traveling. It would be in your best interest not to take any of that money with you.”
I nodded yes in agreement. I knew that would have been way too much money to carry on me while traveling back to Louisiana. And of course, not that many people know that I’m a millionaire, almost billionaire. Not even David knows. If he knew I had that much money, he would have made me invest in stocks, his business, and any other bull-crap to tie up my money. “Yes, of course that would be best. Is there a Bank of Business in Louisiana? Close to the New Iberia or Lafayette area?”
Kim smiled a big smile at me. “Actually there is one in the Lafayette area. It just opened two months ago.” Slowly things were looking up and seemed to be getting a little better.
I smiled back, “That’s great! Now I won’t have to go through the headache of switching banks. Now for my personal savings, I would like to use some of that money to open up a personal checking account, withdraw five thousand cash, and move all of my accounts to the new one.” Kim nodded yes and looked at her computer and started typing on her keyboard.
Kim turned her face back to me “I’ve opened a new account in your name and moved your other accounts to it. You will have full control over all of your accounts including your personal savings and checking account. No one else will be able to touch these accounts besides you.” She looked at me with a little smile on her face and stood up. “Amy, wait here while I grab your safe box, withdrawal, and your temporary debit card. Would you like all small bills or just hundreds?”
I stood and turned toward Kim “Both please. And Kim, thank you for not asking any questions.” Kim let go of the door handle and took two steps toward me. She leaned in and hugged me “Oh sweetheart, it’s none of my business, but I do wish you the best of luck.” I smiled at Kim and she walked out of her office.
I could hear Kim walking up behind me and my nerves started back up again. I haven’t seen my safe box in four years and I almost forgot what was in it. Kim placed the box on her desk and I stood up from my chair. With my key in my hand, ready to open the safe box, my hands started to shake. Kim noticed this “Oh Amy, would you like me to unlock it for you?” I nodded my head yes and handed her my key. She opened it, and tears started to fall from my eyes. The box was filled with my grandmother’s pearl set, my high school and college diplomas, my mother’s blue sapphire ring, and a promise ring from, Kyle, an ex-boyfriend. I started to place everything carefully in my oversized purse. I sat back down and Kim counted the five thousand dollars out. Then she placed the money in a big white envelope and handed it to me. Then she handed me my debit card, a few blank checks, and my information for my new bank account.
I stood up from my chair when Kim did. She walked around her desk and hugged me. “Thank you so much Kim.”
Kim hugged me a little tighter, “You’re welcome. I really do hope everything works out well for you Amy. Keep in touch okay?”
I pulled away, “Of course I will.”
CHAPTER TWO
It’s been three days since I left California. On the first day of traveling, I stopped a few times to rest and eat. Then on the second day, I slept almost the whole day; I was so exhausted from all the crying and the driving. Now I’m almost to Dallas, Texas. My plan is to stop there to visit my mother’s sister and her family. When I was little I would spend every summer with them until I left for college. They lived on the outskirts of Dallas which was wonderful. They had a lot of land and a horse ranch. Every summer my Aunt Tammy allowed me to help train the horses and Lyn, her daughter, had to drag me out of the stables to go do girlie things with her. I treasure those times the most and looked forward to spending time with them again.
I pulled up their long, dirt driveway and saw my Uncle Chris in his massive pumpkin patch. Every year in fall, my aunt and uncle would hold a fall festival a week before Halloween. The kids would come out, pick a pumpkin, and the adults would help crave them. A few times over the years my mother would take me to their Fall Fest. We would leave Friday after school and come back Sunday morning. It was a short visit but I enjoyed every minute of the pumpkin carving, hay stacking, and tracker rides. When I was older, in my teens, I spent most of my mini fall visit with Kyle, my boyfriend at the time, and Lyn’s best friend.
Uncle Chris turned around and saw me parking my car. He started to walk toward me with a big ol’ smile on his face. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen him but he looks just has he did when I was younger. Uncle Chris is a well-built man who gets all his strength and lean muscles from working in the pumpkin patch and at the ranch. He is average height, about five feet nine inches tall, has a golden tan, and shaggy light brown hair. His dark brown smiling eyes make it hard not to smile back every time you see him.
I got out of my car and opened the back door to grab my bags. Uncle Chris placed a hand on my shoulder and I turned around to hug him. He looked down at me and said “Sugar Bug, I’m so happy you decided to stop by for a few weeks. I know Tammy and Lyn have a lot planned for you.”
I broke away from his embrace and turned around to the back door of the car. “Oh Uncle Chris, thank you for allowing me to stay on such short notice. I really—”
“Oh nonsense! Lyn told Tammy and me what happened. You’re more than welcome to stay with us as long as you want. And don’t worry about your bags. I’ll get them up to the guest room for you.”
I hugged my uncle again. “Thank you so much Uncle Chris. I only need the things that are in the backseat. The things in the trunk can stay there until I need them.”
He nodded and started taking everything out of the backseat. “Your aunt is in the stables if you would like to head out there. I’m sure she would love for you to go riding. I know Brownie will be happy to see you.” I turned and began walking in that direction where the big red barn was until I hear Uncle Chris say, “Oh Sugar Bug not that way. We brought some land and built new stables. Your aunt has been really busy and needed more room. Just give me a minute and I’ll take you.”
While my uncle was unloading my car I started to take the small bags up to the guest room. My aunt and uncle’s home was a typical one story ranch house, but bigger. They have four huge bedrooms and two massive bathrooms. The kitchen opens into the living room, which has wide floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the lake. I love this house and I have always dreamed to have one similar to it. My favorite part of the house was the backyard. The windows in the living room would slide open into the back patio, which makes it easy to walk out there and lounge around.
When my uncle and I had everything in the guest room, I looked for my overnight bag. I found the bag sitting on a tall wooden chair. I grabbed my cowboy boots and some socks a
nd changed my shoes.
I walked back outside to find my uncle. He found me first and drove up to me in a golf cart. “It’s not too far away. It will take us about five minutes to get there on the cart. You will love the new stables. We’ve done quite a bit of work in the past few years and I’m sure your aunt will tell you all about it.”
The rest of the way to the stables was silent. I looked around us to see the trees starting to change colors and get ready for the cool Texas fall. It’s so different from California, where almost everything stays the same. I missed the changing of the seasons and watching the trees change colors.
Before I knew it we were at the stables. It was farther down their dirt driveway and it was much bigger than their barn. The stables were green, trimmed in black, and the big black stable doors were open. There were about four other golf carts and a few cars parked along the side of the stables. The last time I was here, only my uncle’s two sisters and my aunt were working. “Did y’all hire some workers?”
Uncle Chris parked the cart next to the others. “We had to. Tammy was getting a lot of new customers and we needed the help. It’s one of the main reasons why we had to buy more land and build the new stables. Our barn became too small.”
We both got out of the cart and walked toward the stable doors when I saw my aunt pulling Brownie out. Brownie is a beautiful horse. She is all brown with a golden, shiny tint to her hair. She is all muscles and well groomed. She walks as if she is the queen of all horses and sometimes she really believes it. I used to always ride Brownie. She was my show horse when I came down to visit during the summer. We made a great team and won lots of ribbons and trophies.
My aunt is a thin tiny woman. She and I are the same height, five three, but she was a lot thinner than me. My aunt has a thin waist and short blond hair with light brown eyes. “Aunt Tammy” She looked up at me with a big smile across her face. I walked up to hug her. “Oh Brownie,” I ran my hand along Brownie’s side and hugged her neck. “I’ve missed you.” Aunt Tammy turned to me “I was just about to take her for a ride. Would you like to do it?” I looked up at my aunt with a smile on my face and even in my eyes. I haven’t smiled that big in months and I knew riding would take my mind away from what has happened in the past few days. “Oh Aunt Tammy I would love to.”
