“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I…look. Lara. I understand that you wanted to be safe. You just chose the wrong guy. You were right. Someone who’s loyal, who’s kind, they do earn their place in the world, and people love them. It isn’t your fault that Adrian couldn’t see what you were. But there are people who can.”
“Uh-huh.” It didn’t matter. The one person I did want to see it, wouldn’t. Those weren’t the qualities he needed in a person. I wiped at my eyes, suddenly desperate to be alone. “I’m sorry, I just…”
“Lara.” Damien’s voice was desperate. “You will always be okay. I promise. You will have the security you want, because you deserve it. And I know we loved each other once. We could have that again.”
“Huh?” I hadn’t been paying attention. I looked over at him…and froze.
Damien was down on one knee, his eyes very warm on mine.
“Lara. I have loved you since the first moment I saw you. I understood why you went to Adrian, but I can give you everything he could—and more. I love you, Lara. I love you. With me, you will never want for anything, and you will know that you are loved every day of your life.”
“What are you doing?”
“Lara.” He said my name again, like a prayer. “Marry me.”
