Crescent Moon

Ula limped over to where her silver cane had ended up. She picked it up and snapped open a small compartment in the wooden part. She pried out the flash drive and held it up. “Dad,” she called to Braydon, “you’ll need this. It’s the money the human embezzled.” She tossed it across the room. Her father caught it with a free hand and went back to his discussion with Shade.
“You’ll get that surgery now,” Killian said from behind her. One hand stroked the nape of her neck, and she leaned into his hand.
“Yes, I’ll get the surgery,” she said. She turned toward him. “After we find my sister.”
Killian groaned, but Ula made him stop with her mouth.

Braydon glanced over and sighed. “Ah, for the love of all that’s holy, do I have to watch that?”
A were approached him from the door, and he cast Killian and Ula a shrewd look. “And another were bites the dust.”
“Wheeler,” Braydon said to the Alpha of the Colorado Cat Clan, “you have my sincerest gratitude for coming to help your were.” He paused for a moment and then asked, “You didn’t happen to find a stray wolf shifter around, did you?”
“Your other daughter?” Wheeler said. “No. Shade briefed us, but we haven’t found anyone except the imprisoned weres and a few humans.” His expression was grim. “The Council had some…programs here that were worse than the humans’ in Wyoming. They deliberately turned some of the captives.”
Braydon digested the information uneasily. “We’ll have to reorganize the Council. Turns out I have openings. Are you interested?”
“I have a clan,” Wheeler said. “And a mate.” He glanced at the door and Braydon followed his glance to the nearby petite were with the chestnut-colored hair who was thoroughly cleaning her knives. Braydon’s eyes came back to Wheeler and caught the smile lurking on the werelion’s mouth.
Braydon sighed. “Well, we’ll have to come up with some decent candidates.”
“What about the bear?” Wheeler nodded at Shade who was instructing some of the rebel weres.
Braydon sighed again louder. “I think he’s going to be hunting something down.”
“Something,” Wheeler repeated. “Don’t you mean someone?”
“There are hundreds of miles of tunnels in the Catacombs,” Braydon said quietly. “There are things down here that no man has ever seen. There are portals and beasts and rumors enough to fill up a fleet of 777’s.”
“If she’s anything like Ula,” Wheeler said, “then she has a better chance than most.”
Braydon nodded. “This isn’t over.”
Wheeler agreed.
