Kyros: #12 (Luna Lodge)

Titus cleared his throat, and Kyros ducked down with Jasmine pressed close to his side.

“I look forward to it,” Titus said. “I’ll let my second-in-command know the situation and then return to my wife.”

Kyros knew what was expected. His leader had told him where to meet him.

  “Follow me,” he whispered.

They moved back through the trees and across the field until they were back at the shed.

“This is all my fault,” Jasmine said finally.

Kyros shook his head and helped her into the tunnel. He hurried behind her as she clicked on her flashlight.

He linked his hand with hers, just like they had been earlier, and the connection soothed the worry he felt.

“This isn’t your fault,” he said. “She was looking for a reason. You just happened to be there.”

  “But I—”

Kyros stopped in his tracks and wrapped her in a warm hug.

“You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he said quickly. “The only thing wrong here is that we have to hide because the world has fucked us over.”

When he pulled back, she gave a little nod.

“You’re right,” she whispered. “You’re the best thing to happen to me, and despite everything, I can’t help that my heart is full of love right now.”

He nodded to the tunnel in front of them. “Titus is going to see Sol,” he said. “He’ll know what we should do next.”

Jasmine nodded and followed him along the dark path. Their hands remained linked as they stumbled along.

After a bit, Kyros stopped under the trap door to Sol’s house and stared hard at it.

Jasmine watched him, concern mixed with a desire not to leave his side.

  “Come on,” he whispered.

A moment later the door opened, and Titus leapt through the opening.

“Better you stay out of sight,” he said. “There’s no guarantee that the Battleax won’t stop by here just for spite.”

Jasmine worried her lip. She hoped that wasn’t the case.

“You have a car?” he asked.

Titus surprised her with his comment.

She nodded. “It’s at the café,” she said and shuddered.

He nodded and turned back to Kyros. “I assume there was trouble?”

“Townspeople kidnapped her,” he said. “Full mind control. They’ve got some sort of setup over at the mill. I think that’s where they convert people.”

Titus nodded slowly, his brow furrowing. “Anyone dead?”

She marveled about matter-of-fact he was about death, but she had seen how close some had come. And, in the end, she wasn’t so sure it wouldn’t have been justified.

Kyros shook his head. “Don’t think so,” he said. “I tried my best just to disable them, but they have them training with weapons. They aren’t any good and are slow as fuck, but shit is about to get real.”

Titus frowned. “I think that’s only half of it,” he said. “Take Jasmine and go to Varius. Send Lucan back. Tell him to bring the packets. Things are moving quickly, and I have a feeling we’re going to need to make a quick exit.”

Jasmine cleared her throat and blushed when both men turned to look at her.

“Will it really be okay?” she asked. “My going with him?”

Titus shrugged. “The colonel is hell bent on catching us in the act,” he said. “If you return, she’ll likely use whatever tactics to interrogate you. If she finds out about Kyros, our only chance at freedom would be lost.”

She shook as she listened. So much was at stake.

“It’s up to you,” he said.

Jasmine watched as Kyros struggled not to let his face fall. Her heart broke, and she gave his hand a little squeeze.

“I choose Kyros,” she said. “I choose to be with the one that makes me whole.”

He wrapped her in a warm hug and sighed against him.

  “Always,” he whispered.

She nodded. Life had handed them a twist, but she would always have him by her side.

  Chapter Nineteen

Jasmine smiled as the warm sun filled the car. They had long since driven out of the cool weather, and it felt like they had left the bad feelings behind with the nasty weather.

She turned to stare at Kyros as he drove. Even with the windows down and arm half slung out the window, she doubted anyone would be able to tell his superhuman nature.

He glanced over to where she was and raised a brow. “What?”

She grinned over at him. He had to know what she was going to ask. It had been the same question she had asked since they left the storage facility.

  “Where are we going?”

His grin lit up the whole car, and she loved that she could finally see it on him. It was as if getting out of that dreary place opened a whole new door in his heart.

Leaving had been surprisingly easy. Titus had been able to slip out a few of her belongings and promised he would give her love to the children.

It tore her up that she would be leaving them in such a place, but from what Titus had said, they would be with her soon, and that gave her some comfort at least.

Once they had picked up the car, she stopped by the storage facility to get anything else she might need and then stopped by the bank to drain her account, all the while making sure to keep Kyros as far away from any camera as they could.

Then they just drove. The farther away they got, the more she started to see him smile.

“I’ll tell you this,” he said with a laugh. “You won’t believe it until you see it.”

Jasmine frowned. “That’s not a hint at all!”

He laughed again, and it was hard for her not to smile back. Kyros made life so easy.

She glanced down at the postcard in her hand. One she’d addressed to her mother.

It was the last piece she needed to tie up. The one that was going to be the hardest to explain.

Her mind wandered to her parents. Their happiness had been the foundation for everything she had ever wanted in life.

A small smile played on her face as she scrawled a line on the side of the card.

  Daddy would approve.

A tear slid down her cheek, and she jumped when a rough hand swiped it away.

“I’m sorry this is so hard,” Kyros said.

Jasmine shook her head and smiled. “You make me happy,” she said. “And that’s all a person could want in life.”

She watched as a smile spread on his face, and he reached out to link their hands together.

  “Always.”

  Author Bio

Madison currently lives with her husband and two children in the Valley of the Sun in Arizona. After leaving the frozen tundra of the north, she was more surprised than anyone with how much she has enjoyed living in the desert. Seeing as she stated on more than one occasion before moving to Arizona how much she hated heat, it was an odd move, but it seems her hatred for sub-zero temperatures and ice has won out in the end.

When she’s not writing, she’s enjoying time with her family. Madison and her family frequent festivals in the area, as well as local cultural events, and spend time with family in the area. In the summer, she is most likely to be found in the pool with the family and in the winter by the fireplace. Since both her children are autistic, days can be a little chaotic, but with her husband beside her, there’s nothing she can’t handle.
