Figments of Fear (A Dark Fantasy Horror): The Edge of Reflection 2

Forrest trees surrounded a small circle of cabins set up around a campfire. Several undistinguished forms sat around the fire chatting, while off to their side, on the porch of one of the cabins, a faint orange glow radiated from a lantern.
There, sitting on the porch steps, Lisa leaned back against Gabe, who’d become relaxed in the country lifestyle. He hadn’t shaved in ages and his hair had grown out longer. The top few buttons of Gabe’s flannel shirt were unbuttoned and he reached up to rub at the scar on his chest.
Lisa looked over her shoulder at him.
“Does it still itch?” she asked.
“No,” he said. “It’s just a strange souvenir to have branded on my body forever.”
“Well, at least it’s cut out. I’d rather you live with an old scar than always looking over your shoulder for the next assassin out for the bounty.”
Gabe reached around Lisa and rubbed her large, pregnant belly.
“Please, let’s just forget about Goody Bones, Cloak, and all the other horrible stuff from the past.”
At the campfire, someone played Spanish guitar and set the mood for the peaceful atmosphere.
“This is nice,” Lisa said. “I really like it here.”
“As close to home as we’ll ever see,” Gabe replied.
“Maybe even better than home, don’t you think?”
“Yeah, as long as we stay here in the mountains and keep to ourselves I think we’ll be okay. It definitely beats Detroit.”
“They say we’re going to be the first to ever have a baby on this side,” Lisa said.
She turned and smiled up at him. He met her with a peck on her lips.
“I know. What do you think it means?” Gabe asked.
“You’re the Haissem,” she reminded him. “It means things are going to change.”
“Change,” Gabe repeated.
He thought about the word and wondered exactly what it meant in a world like this. Lisa sucked in a painful breath and winced as she rubbed her belly.
“Soon,” Lisa said.
