Caroline smiled at him with love in her eyes. “Where have you been, Lord Royston? We have missed you.”
“I left early to check on your school, and I talked to Reverend Smitten regarding the funds you’ve given him to help the local widows with food and housing.” Damon sat close to her and touched his son’s dark-brown hair and soft skin. “You know, my love, at the rate you are going, you will be broke one day.”
“Then I suppose I shall have to beg my husband for funds.” Caroline’s eyes twinkled with humor.
“Being the besotted fool he is, I’m sure he will open his pockets,” he teased back.
Mary knocked on the door and came in when Caroline answered. “It is almost time, milady,” she said, but seeing Damon, she left the room.
“Husband, we must hurry. Have you forgotten Hannah is marrying Arthur in two hours? She has been fretful you would be late.”
“Never. I just needed time to think about all the changes in our lives this past year. It is difficult to believe my baby sister is getting married.”
“I’m so glad you gave them the new house for their own. When they can get away from London, they will be close by.” A shadow passed over Caroline’s face. “You are sure you do not mind my mother and father staying for a visit after the wedding?”
“Definitely not. Your father and I have developed quite a good relationship. I admit your mother can be hard to bear at times, but our young man is bringing out a softer side in her.”
Caroline laughed. “I can’t believe it either. Never did I expect her to be a doting grandmamma.”
Damon stood. “I’d better get ready to walk Hannah down the aisle. I suppose the next wedding will be Rook and Sara. I am amazed at the changes in him.”
“He has lost his reputation as a rake.” Caroline smiled and rang for her maid.
When Mary returned, she handed the baby to her. Mary had barely left the room, when Damon caught Caroline in a hug.
He covered her eyes and lips with kisses, and then sighed, glancing toward the bed. “You don’t suppose we have time…”
“For shame, Lord Royston, in broad daylight.”
Damon felt his heart swell with joy at the sound of laughter in her voice. His life was full and complete thanks to his wife. He smiled as he went into the bedroom to dress for Hannah’s wedding.
