MIKE: Defenders MC Page 8

Marty let the woman scrub her hands and strip her down to her underwear, then they came off too when Mrs realized they were covered in blood too.

Lacey and Ginger squeezed into the bathroom too and they used a towel to scrub Marty down. She couldn’t believe she was standing there naked and letting women she barely knew scrub her body, but they were family. She heard Ginger’s sharp intake of breath and met her eyes.

“What? What is it?” Mrs plopped a fist on her hip.

Ginger pointed to Marty’s belly. There was a tiny bump, but Marty couldn’t believe this woman could tell.

Mrs covered her mouth and tears sprang to her eyes. “Oh my God!”

The door was flung open and Law ran in only to be pummeled with a wet towel until he stepped out again.

“What the fuck is the problem?”

  “Marty’s pregnant!”

“Holy fuck women are crazy. I thought something was wrong. How the fuck is a man supposed to tell the difference between a happy scream and a scared scream?”

Marty couldn’t help it. A laugh bubbled up in her throat until it burst out and she doubled over, shaking with laughter that quickly turned to gut-wrenching sobs. She was surrounded by warm arms and comforting words that she couldn’t hear. Somehow these amazing women got her dressed and when she was all cried out she was lifted and wrapped in the blanket. Someone had pulled a cot into the waiting room and that’s where Moose placed her. She just curled up and laid there with her eyes glued to the door and waited for the doctor.

Mike felt like shit and it wasn’t a new feeling. It wasn’t unwelcomed either because it meant he was alive. Alive was a good thing. It hadn’t taken him long to remember what had happened and what Marty had said just before it had.

He let his eyes search the dark room until he found her curled on some kind of pullout chair in the corner of the room. The moonlight spilled through the blinds and made her look like some sort of fairy sleeping on a puffy white flower.

He frowned. He hoped it was the drugs making him think like a woman and not something that wouldn’t wear off.

He hated to wake her, but he needed to see her eyes, to know that what she had done hadn’t dulled them.

“Hey mommy, could I get a little water over here?”

“I’ll give you some damned…” She stopped and her eyes flew open as she scrambled to the bed.

Mike heard a snigger and found Spec sitting in a chair on the other side of his bed.

“Never has been a morning person.”

Marty gave both men a withering glance before she helped Mike drink some water. She looked toward the clock.

  “It’s not morning yet smartass.”

Mike let out a breath at her show of spirit. He grabbed her hand and tugged her down into the bed with him.

“What are you doing? I can’t…I’ll hurt you.”

“I’m dying to feel you in my arms Marty. I was so scared I wouldn’t be able to save you.”

“Technically you didn’t.” Spec put in and earned a glare from both Mike and Marty. He shrugged. “Law and Shad took down Harper. He is currently our guest.”

Marty waited for the pain, but it didn’t come. Harper had made his bed.

“Marty tell me you’re ok. Tell me I didn’t dream what you told me.”

“I’m ok Mike, we both are.” She took his hand and pressed it to her slightly rounded belly.

He was feeling tired again, but he wanted to talk to her. “Need to marry me…need that…” His words slurred, but knew she’d heard him. She nodded and leaned over to kiss him.

“I’ve got you now and I’ll never let you go.”

Mike let his eyes drift closed with a sense of completeness. He had never expected to find it, but he had. She had looked at him the way his mother had always looked at his father. He had thought it was weakness that had broken his father when his mother had died, but it wasn’t the kind of weakness he had thought. It was the kind of weakness that happens when you cut half of a person away. That’s what this was. He had found his other half and he would do anything to keep her safe.
