Pulling her close to him, his hand urged her legs apart, running over her delicate slit. “Damn, you’re so wet.” She was ready for him now, but this was not going to be rushed. As his fingers circled her clit she whimpered and trembled against him.

  “Please, Drew, I . . .” Her voice was barely a whisper.

Meeting her gaze, he slid one finger deep inside her. She sucked in her breath and grabbed onto his shoulders. He lifted one of her legs to rest on his arm so he had full access to all she had to offer. He fucked her with one finger, then two, as his thumb stroked her clit. Faster, deeper, until she was moaning in pleasure, begging him for more. His movements grew faster and more urgent until her body finally clenched around his fingers. She shuddered, her head thrashing from side to side, digging her nails into him as she released her hot juices on his hand.

He didn’t give her any time to even catch her breath, picking her up in his arms so he could lay her onto the bed, leaving her only long enough to sheath himself with a condom from his wallet which he had to dig out of the pocket of his pants lying in a pile on the floor. When he returned to her she welcomed him, wrapping her arms around his neck pulling him down to her. Kissing her deeply, he then pulled away, kneeling between her legs, taking in the beauty of her body. God, she is hot. Her full breasts and round hips begged for his attention. He planned on exploring every inch of her, but his body was aching for only one part of her right now.

Taking his hard cock in his hand, he stroked her clit with the head while never taking his eyes off her. Her eyes darkened with need and desire.

“Katherine, tell me what you want, what you need.” His voice was deep, almost a growl, as he tried to hold control of his own need.

She opened her legs wider. She moved his hand and took his cock in hers. Yes, take me. Licking her lips, then biting on her bottom one, she guided him, raising her hips to take him inside her. Fuck yeah. He couldn’t hold back any longer. Grabbing her by the wrists, he held them to either side of her, and in one motion entered her fully. He pumped fast and hard, driving into her again and again. She pulled her hands away and ran them up his chest, raking her nails gently over him, stopping briefly to pinch his nipples before moving on. Oh God. His blazing gaze met hers. “Baby, you’re killing me,” he said before he claimed her nipple fiercely with his mouth.

  “Yes! Drew! I . . . Oh God . . . yes . . .” Her hands were on his back pulling him to her. “Please . . .”

“Yes, Katherine, give it to me. Give it all to me.” He fucked her harder, faster, as she cried out his name again, meeting his thrust with her own. “Yeah, that’s it.” Her moans grew louder against his neck, and her body began to tense around his cock as she came. He plunged deeper. His orgasm rocked him to the core, stronger than anything he had experienced before.

His sweat-glistened body collapsed onto the bed near her, as they both struggled to catch their breath.

Katherine spoke first. “That was . . .”

  “Incredible,” Drew finished.

“Yes.” Her voice was barely a whisper now.

Drew heard her breath ease till it was obvious she had fallen asleep. He should get up, get dressed, and go. Spending any more time with her was only going to give her the wrong impression. He didn’t do relationships, and he didn’t do overnighters. He liked to avoid the morning-after awkward conversation.

Rolling over onto his side, Drew threw an arm and leg over hers and pulled her close. He wanted to hold her in his arms just a little while longer. He would leave shortly, but he wasn’t ready to let go, not yet at least. He’d only stay for another minute. It didn’t mean anything.

  Chapter Five

  ‡

Thankfully she had slept, but not nearly long enough. What was I thinking? That was the point. She hadn’t been. KJ let her wants cloud her good judgement. Yes, the sex was absolutely amazing. Mind-blowing, to be accurate. But that didn’t eliminate the fact she wasn’t ready for this. Hadn’t she just convinced herself the last thing she needed to do was get emotionally involved? Here comes the roller coaster.

KJ prided herself in thinking everything through logically. Why can’t I do that with this? Mentally she began her pros and cons list. She decided to start with the reasons they shouldn’t be together. One. We are on different sides of the country. That didn’t stop him. Two. We are so different: he’s so calm, cool, and relaxed. Maybe that is a good thing. Number three. She closed her eyes racking her brain for the list she knew was there but somehow seemed so insignificant at this moment.

The house was quiet except for the light snore coming from Drew, still sound asleep next to her. Lying on her back, she turned only her head as not to wake him while she studied his face. His hair was a thick, wild mass of curls from running her hands through it the night before. His lips, which were so firm, now softened, tempting her to kiss them. Damn, why was he so sweet? He had made sure her every need was satisfied before his own. God, he knows how to make me purr. If it was only so easy, she could solely focus on the physical aspect and maybe this would work out. But she wasn’t that type of person. The more contact she had with him, the deeper the connection would get. There was no changing it; she was a woman full of emotions, wants, and needs. Over the past two years she had suppressed that side of her . . . or had at least tried to. After what they shared earlier that night, there wasn’t any going back into her emotional box. It wasn’t going to be easy, but it was time to take the bull by the horns and move forward. However . . . not at this moment.

He stirred slightly, turning toward her. His arm now rested across her stomach while his hand cupped her bare breast. That is not going to help. Her body defying her wishes, she felt warmed from even such a simple touch. You aren’t going to make this easy for me are you, Drew?

Lying quietly, she went through the list of questions she had for herself. One. Why did I invite him to dinner? Because he made me laugh and smile, something I thought I would never do again. Two. Why did I need to see him again? Because he haunted my dreams every night, and I needed to see if it was real or not. Three. Why did I sleep with him? Because he was sexy and made me feel like I’ve never felt before. Four. When are you going to tell him this can’t happen again?

Before she could answer her last question, she felt his fingers move. Slowly they began to circle her nipple, the tip of his finger making it erect. A delightful shiver of want ran through her. Realizing he was awake, KJ opened her mouth to tell him to stop, that they needed to talk, but only a soft moan escaped her as she licked her lips. Any lingering wish for sleep was replaced by a growing need to replay what they shared earlier. Maybe we’ll talk later.

“Hmm, I’m hungry.” His voice was deep as he kissed and nibbled her earlobe.

She laughed softly. “Too bad you never got to eat your cake.”

Drew pulled himself up onto his elbow, cupped her breast, then licked her neck and the crest of her breast. “I would settle for just the frosting that was here yesterday.”

She blushed as she recalled the expression on his face yesterday. How had I missed that? She had been so worried about the disarray of her kitchen, she’d overlooked his true intentions when he removed the icing from her neck. Duh. Was I blind? Dwelling on it now wasn’t going to change a thing. Only moments ago she had decided she needed to let go and live again. It was time to stop living in the past, even if that was only twenty-four hours ago. Drew was here now, and there was no misunderstanding what he wanted. The twitch between her legs said her wants were one and the same. It wasn’t too late to make up for missed opportunities. With a suggestive tone she asked, “No frosting tonight, but can I talk you into improvising?”

Drew arched a brow and asked, “Hmm, what exactly are you offering?”

KJ couldn’t help it. A little playful romp with Drew was a great way to end any day. With a giggle of mischief and a wink she replied, “You choices are whipped cream or caramel sauce.”

He gave her a questioning look. “And what do
you plan on doing with those items?” His tone hinted he had plenty of ideas of his own if she couldn’t think of anything.

She encouraged his dirty little thoughts with no hesitation. Might even have a few of my own. “I am sure we can come up with something interesting to do with them.” KJ took his hand and brought it to her mouth. She licked the tip of his finger then twirled her tongue around it.

He watched her every move then pulled his hand away, grabbed her around the waist, and rolled over so she lay on top of him. “That’s just the way I like my dessert.”

Drew’s inner clock was still on East Coast time and woke him before the sun even had a chance to rise. That was convenient as the stock market usually is hopping on Monday mornings and it gave him time to handle several calls from the other room.

With business out of the way, he had been tempted to head back to the bedroom and wake her. He had to admit, it had been difficult pulling himself away from her earlier. He saw Blossom sitting patiently by the front door. “You want to go out?” Her ears perked up. What do I know about walking a dog? Grabbing the leash from the hook, he slowly connected it to her collar. As they headed out the door and down the path he realized how strong Blossom actually was. This dog had a mind of her own and was adamant about where she wanted to go and when she wanted to stop. How do you do this? Drew pictured Katherine, so tiny, and the dog walking her instead of her walking the dog. He had no idea what would have possessed her to get such a powerful breed. But then again, she had surprised him on many levels. This was just one more. She had made walking this dog look easy. Mind you, the strength in her legs had also impressed him the night before . . . or was it early this morning? Whichever it was, neither of them had any strength after the hours of enjoyment they shared.

Drew needed this walk as much as the dog. He’d had every intention of leaving in the middle of the night after Katherine had fallen asleep. Though he urged his body to get up, get dressed, he hadn’t. Even now the opportunity to slip away without any goodbyes was still there. Instead, he found himself walking her dog. Didn’t see this coming.

It had been a long time since something or someone had thrown him off kilter. The last time left scars that still hadn’t healed. The harsh reality was that what you think you know about a person may only be a camouflage for the bitter truth of who they really are. Though he still loved his parents, they were two people who could never be in the same room with each other without sparks flying. The saying that money can change a person was proven accurate the day his parents won the single largest lottery payout ever of four hundred eighty million dollars. What he thought was a happy family—living with his mom and dad in a two-bedroom home in the suburbs—all changed instantly. They moved into a mansion, had servants do everything, and family dinners no longer existed. Every night his dad came home later and later, and his mom could be heard yelling and throwing things. Home became a place he tried to avoid. When his parents approached him about doing his senior year at a boarding school, he’d jumped at the opportunity to get out and didn’t go back except to visit. Every time they called, he expected to hear they were getting a divorce, but those words were never said. Instead, they’ve continued to live in the same house with totally separate lives. When he asked them about it, they said they didn’t want him to come from a broken home. Drew couldn’t make them understand that their home couldn’t get much more broken than it was already. Sadly he knew exactly why they stayed together. Neither was willing to part with the money, so instead they both spent their lives in misery. He wished he could say he was different from them, that money didn’t matter, but he knew by his lifestyle that it wasn’t true. Trying to cover it up wasn’t going to change the fact. The only thing he could do was not bring another person into his world, or he might find himself following in his father’s footsteps. And definitely not someone as amazing as Katherine.

His mind was made up. He would walk the dog, go back to the house, and leave without seeing her. It was the only thing he could do. Anything other than that would only risk her being hurt, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.

As they continued their walk through the neighborhood, he was glad for the distraction of local children who had been playing outside running over to hug and pet Blossom. He watched her soak up all the attention. You don’t miss a trick do you, girl? She turned up to him with what almost looked like a grin, as though she had read his mind and waited for him to hug and kiss her too. Never going to happen.

Continuing on their way, they came across one boy in his mid-teens who stood in their pathway, arms crossed as though to intimidate him. His eyes squinting, he leaned back as though he was sizing Drew up. The young boy’s tone said he wanted to be taken seriously. “KJ know you have Blossom?”

His eyebrows shot up in surprise as he held back his laughter. The kid probably was counting the days when he would finally be able to shave, yet he was trying to stare him down like a man twice his age and size. Kid’s got guts. “Yes. She does.”

He didn’t move from his spot. “Are you a friend of hers or something?”

He wasn’t sure if the boy was concerned or jealous. Either way, it was nice to know that not only did she have Blossom to protect her, but the neighbors seemed to as well. “We’re friends. I’m Drew. What’s your name?”

“Clint. I’ve never seen anyone walk Blossom but KJ. Is she sick, or something?”

Drew wasn’t fond of getting questioned by a kid or anyone else for that matter. Why he was walking the dog and where she was wasn’t anyone’s business. Somehow he could picture this kid calling 911 if he didn’t give some sort of acceptable answer. “Katherine is fine and as you can see, Blossom has no problem with me walking her either.” He heard a heavy sigh come from her as though telling him, “Don’t push it, buddy.”

Clint looked at him then at the dog. Drew’s answer must have satisfied him because Clint stepped out of his way, letting them pass. God, don’t tell me I was arrogant like that. Shaking his head he knew the answer. Damn, I still am. He laughed softly as they walked away.

Besides the short interruption, it was good. Normally he would have gone for an early jog. Blossom was a lot of things, but he didn’t think she was a fan of running. She had one pace—her own. Slow. What he thought would have been a brief adventure turned into thirty minutes of stopping to sniff every tree or bush they passed. What he thought would be an annoying task, he now found walking the amazingly relaxing. Gave him time to think a few things through. Like why am I still here? He’d had his fun, so it was time to go. Staying longer would only send the wrong message.

No matter how he sorted through it, there was no reason he stayed except the one he didn’t want to face. Because I want to be with her. That wasn’t part of his plan. Not at all. He had even told his pilot to stay on standby because he wasn’t staying long. It was a cold-ass thing to do, but that had never stopped him before. It was all planned out so well. Too well.

Who was he trying to fool? There wasn’t going to be anything simple when dealing with someone like Katherine. Beautiful, intelligent, strong-minded, and sexy as hell. He told himself it was purely a physical attraction, but she had the whole package. Amazing.

He hadn’t stopped thinking about her since the first moment he’d laid eyes on her at the fundraiser. His smile deepened into a burst of laughter. Jill Aragao, I think I underestimated you. Jill sending him at the last minute to invite Katherine to join them was really smooth. He should have seen that coming. The last thing he wanted was his friends playing matchmaker for him. He was content in his single lifestyle. No one to answer to but myself. Drew wasn’t looking for any major changes in his life right now, no matter how much he wanted her. That’s all it is, a want.

Blossom picked up the pace on the last leg of their walk; they were quickly approaching Katherine’s house. If you’re still sleeping, I know how I’m going to wake you up.

  Chapter Six

  ‡

  Blossom was pulli
ng so hard he could hardly hold her back as he tried to open the door. “Easy, girl,” he said trying to calm her. She wasn’t having it. Once the door was open, she broke free from his grip and headed to the living room. Why me? His attempt to grab the leash again failed as he turned the corner of the hall.

Drew entered the front hall and closed the front door behind him. That was when he heard what was causing Blossom to go crazy. Crying. Shit. Had she thought he’d taken off without even saying goodbye? Not possible since I had Blossom with me.

Drew followed the sound and found Katherine sitting on the floor holding what appeared to be frame close to her chest as tears poured down her cheeks. Blossom was already laying down right beside her, her large doggy head on her lap.

He wasn’t sure what had happened, but this was not the same carefree woman he had left a short time ago. “Katherine, what’s the matter? What happened?” Drew approached her from the opposite side, keeping his distance from Blossom. Though he didn’t have a dog, he knew they were attuned to emotions and didn’t want to startle either of them at the moment.

  Sniffing Katherine said, “You should go. Drew. I can’t . . . I mean . . . I don’t want you to . . .” She fumbled with the words as more tears flowed.

See you like this? That he understood. She was an amazingly strong woman, and seeing her like this was more a shock than just a surprise. Drew didn’t know why, but he couldn’t bring himself to do as she asked, not this time. Her words told him to leave, but her eyes, though tear-filled, begged him to stay. Sitting on the floor beside her, he put an arm around her, coaxing her to him. She instinctively turned and buried her face in his chest and sobbed even harder.
