Stuart was walking toward him.
“Great job, Brandt. Hell of a job.”
Chuck shrugged.
Stuart punched him in the face, knocking him to the deck.
Chuck landed cold and hard. As his eyes refocused, he sat up, leaning on his elbow, dazed.
“Remember that the next time I try to help you out,” Stuart said.
Chuck wiped away the blood from his lips, and smiled. He said, “I think we’re going to get along just fine. Give me a hand, will you?”
Stuart reached down, but pulled his arm back. “You’re not gonna try anything, are you?”
“No, no, I won’t do that.”
Stuart helped Chuck back up on his feet.
A couple of medics carried Lazar past on a stretcher. They had him strapped down in his straight jacket.
As Lazar was carried to the helicopter, he screamed “Brandt!” Then he was seized with pain and moaned in agony. “Brandt!” he shouted like a man possessed. “Brandt!”
WRAP-UP
On helicopter ride back to Peru.
Jeff was glaring. “You shouldn’t have done that without me, Chuck.”
“You came anyway.”
“Of course, I came anyway. I should’ve been with you. I’m just glad you survived without me.”
“Just lucky.”
“Next time, call.”
“Of course.”
Maria said, “Thank you, Chuck.”
“What for?”
“For sparing my father.”
Chuck was quiet for a moment. “He’s got a tough road ahead of him.”
“At least he’s in custody. He can get the help he needs.”
Chuck nodded. “You’ll still have to continue on with your self-defense training. Just in case.”
“Of course.”
EPILOGUE
Monastery in the Pyrenees Mountains of Northern Spain
After giving his confession, Chuck was sitting in the office of the abbot. He said, “I’ve been here for a month now. I have more peace than before. I want to stay.”
“You saved so many lives, my son. Who could count how many lives you saved?”
“Yes, but at great personal cost.”
“You are a warrior.”
“Yes, I always have been, but now I want to be a prayer warrior.”
“I understand what you are saying. Many warriors have given up the sword and taken up the sword of prayer and the Blessed Rosary. My only concern is that you must pray for guidance. I know your time here is limited.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You have given up everything to protect the people. You have sacrificed your own life for others. This is an act of great love, but more time is needed for contemplation.”
Chuck nodded. “Yes, you are right, Father.” He started to walk out of the office.
“Yes, but in the meantime you have a visitor. I have been told that it is on a matter of the most urgent nature.”
“A visitor? Here?”
“Yes, he says his name is Stuart Wilson. He says it’s a matter of national security.”
