Rescuing Lilly

  "I'm so sorry, Jake," she whispered as she laid her head on his chest.

  "It's alright sweetheart," he soothed. "Let's get you into bed." He lifted her as he stood and carried her upstairs. He set her down on his bed and pulled back the covers. Lilly looked around in confusion.

  "Jake, this is your room."

  "It's your room now too. Now get some sleep," he said as she laid her head down and closed her eyes.

  Jake went to sleep holding Lilly in his arms. His feelings for her were increasing by the day and he knew he was going to have to do something about it. He couldn't believe she was going to leave to find a job. Thank goodness he stopped her and now she was going to work on the ranch with him. This would give him the opportunity to show her everything about ranch life. Maybe she really would stay with him after paying off all of the debt. The next morning he woke before the sun rose and shook Lilly lightly to wake her.

  "Lilly, wake up honey," he said softly as he began pulling the covers off of her.

  "Jake," she whined, "it's too early. Lay back down with me."

  Jake smiled at her request. "I would love to baby, but I've got to show you around the ranch since you're going to start working today."

  Lilly slowly opened her eyes and rolled over to stare at him. "That starts today?" she groaned.

  "Yes ma'am," he said giving her a big smile and a swat on her butt. "Let's go!"

  Lilly watched him leave the room and rolled out of bed to throw on some jeans and a t-shirt. When she met him down in the kitchen, he was writing a list on a pad of paper on the island. She walked over and started reading: Clean stalls, wipe down windows in stables and barn, feed and brush horses. And the list continued on and on. She looked up at him, hoping this wasn't all listed for just her.

  "Calm down. I'm not going to just throw you to the wolves. I'm going to show you how to do everything today. I told Jim and Tom that I would be helping you today so they are handling some of my normal work," Jake said reassuringly, while he rubbed her back.

  Lilly nodded and followed him outside. Even though he was very particular how he liked work handled around the ranch, he turned out to be a really great teacher. He took his time with her, praising often, and correcting gently when she made mistakes. She was half-surprised by his actions and tried to joke with him about his easy-going teaching style.

  "You know, part of me was worried you might rule with an iron fist with the ranch work," she laughed as they brushed the horses in the stables.

  "What's that supposed to mean?" Jake wondered.

  Lilly looked down at the horse, suppressing a smile. "I don't know, figured you'd probably spank me or something if I messed up one of the chores."

  Jake laughed loudly and pulled Lilly close to him to whisper in her ear. "Better watch out, you're giving me ideas." Lilly pulled back and glared at him from the other side of the horse, hoping he was joking. "You know, not all spankings are for punishment," he said with a wink.

  Lilly didn't say anything but turned her head in question. She could feel her juices running with just that one statement.

  "One day maybe I'll show you," he smiled and put the brush down to pick up his ringing phone. "What's up Jim?" he answered. Jake's face dropped to a scowl as he listened intently, only mumbling responses while Lilly stared at his expressions. The conversation was short but turned Jake's attitude from jovial to frustrated within a matter of seconds.

  "What's wrong?" Lilly asked.

  Jake looked down at Lilly, shaking his head. He hated that he had to leave her to deal with another situation with his neighbor. "I'm sorry sweetie, I have something to take care of with Jim. I'll try to be back soon though. Do you want to try to finish this on your own or would you rather go back to the house?"

  Lilly shrugged her shoulders, upset that their day together was ruined. Jake cupped her face in his hands and leaned down to press his lips onto hers. He felt her reach up to him and wrapped his arms around her, lifting her up to kiss her more deeply. Jake could feel her heart racing against his chest as she held her breath during their kiss. She lifted her arms around his neck to hold herself closer to him, never wanting him to let go. As he pulled his mouth back, he held onto her bottom lip with his teeth and smiled at her.

  "I'm reclaiming this when I get back," he said, giving her one more short kiss before setting her feet back down on the ground.

  Lilly smiled and wrapped her arms around his waist, "I can't wait."

  "If you need anything, just call me okay?" he said tipping her chin so she looked up at him. "And behave."

  "Always," Lilly replied with a mocking tone. Lilly walked back around the horse and picked up the brush again to start stroking its back.

  "I mean it, Lilly. You know the rules." Jake raised his eyebrow at her as he walked out of the stable.

  "Jake needs to be watched twenty-four, seven. He doesn't need that land. I do and I don't like people taking what's mine. I don't care what you have to do, but make sure he knows that I won't stop until he gives me what I want." Lance Stetson paced around his office, staring at his two younger ranch hands.

  "Sir, we already poisoned his cattle and tore up parts of the fence," remarked David, the younger of the two cattle hands.

  "And that didn't work. So you need to figure something out. I'm sick of dealing with this young prick who thinks he is a better rancher than I am," Lance snorted.

  David looked at his coworker, Taylor, with a grin and looked back at Lance. "Don't worry, boss. We'll take care of it."

  Taylor and David rode to the top of the hill that adjoined their land and Jake's land. After tying up their horses, they set up camp to take watch on Jake's ranch. From where they sat, they could see the house, stables, and the barn through the woods.

  "Who's the girl that's been at the ranch lately? Do you know her?" Taylor asked David as they watched from afar.

  "Never seen her around here before. Maybe she's a cousin or something," David answered. Shortly after, they watched Jake kiss the girl and then stride out of the stables. Both men looked at each other, their minds beginning to explore a new plan.

  Jake met Jim by the edge of one of their pastures. Jim walked him over to the surrounding fence where it looked like it was ripped from the ground.

  "You don't think it was animals, do you?" Jim asked, looking at Jake with concern.

  "I don't know any animals that could tear up a fence like that." Jake picked up one of the posts to check for teeth marks and checked the surrounding dirt for footprints. "These look like boot prints over here," he said pointing out two large boot impressions in the ground around one of the ripped up stakes. "You really think Lance is going to all this trouble?"

  "For some reason, I don't think that old man is the cause of all of this. I bet he's contracted out his dirty work to those scumbags who work for him. That kid David was in an out of juvenile hall since he was ten. I don't know much about Taylor except I've seen them out drinking together at the bar in town." Jake glanced around the area to see any other signs of foul play.

  "So what are we gonna do about this, Jake?"

  Jake stared silently at the woods for a moment before turning back to him. "I think they are just trying to scare us. Let's keep an eye on everything. These fences needed fixing in the first place so maybe they just jump-started the work. Tell the other boys to keep an eye out. I don't think they will do anything violent, but I'd rather be safe than sorry."

  "Sure thing, boss," Jim replied, picking up some tools to mend the fence. "So, Jake, how is everything going with you and Miss Lilly? She seems like a real sweet girl."

  Jake looked up at him like he was crazy for noticing the relationship developing between Lilly and himself. Then realized he probably hadn't been too shy about wanting to spend the past few weeks with her. "She is. You're right. I don't know Jim. I guess it's been such a long time since a female has been around the ranch... well, bes
ides Sylvia."

  "That's true. It just seems like she has takin' a liking to you," Jim hinted. He had worked for Jake for years and hadn't ever seen him as happy until Lilly appeared.

  Jake paused and looked at Jim. He knew what he was doing but knew better than to bring his personal life into his work. "Jim I see where you are going with this. Yes I do care about her very much, but we have work to do. Get some guys to come on out and help us fix this fence before the sun goes down tonight. I really don't want to lose any of our cattle over this incident."

  Jake spent the next three hours mending the fence with his hands, wondering about what Jim said earlier. Maybe Lilly really did have the same feelings for him. But could she handle living out here on the ranch and not having the closeness of a city? He didn't want to take that opportunity away from her but he definitely didn't want to lose her either. Once the fence was in working order, he explained the situation with Lance to his other workers and left for the house.

  Once Lilly finished with the horses, she cleaned up the stable as much as she could. Even though she didn't know exactly what Jake expected her to do, she cleaned out the stalls, added new hay, swept the floors, organized all the saddles and tackle, and added fresh water for each horse. After an hour of serious cleaning, she decided she wanted to do something to surprise Jake before he returned so she ran to the house to talk to Sylvia.

  "Sylvia! What is Jake's favorite food?" She practically yelled as she rushed into the back door.

  Sylvia spun around in surprise. "Goodness gracious, girl. You nearly gave me a heart attack!"

  "Sorry!" she said catching her breath. "I want to do something nice for Jake tonight so I thought I could make him something to eat. What's his favorite food? Does he like dessert?"

  "Hmm," Sylvia thought, cleaning her hands off on her apron. "Well I've already gotten dinner started, but you know what? Jake loves some apple pie! Have you ever made it?"

  "No, but it can't be that hard right. Some apples, some crust and an oven."

  Sylvia laughed heartily. "There's a little more to it than that, honey. C'mon I'll show you."

  Jake couldn't remember a time he was more exhausted than he was at that moment. Helping Lilly all morning and then helping the men fix the fence all afternoon took nearly all of his energy and all he wanted to do was cuddle up with Lilly on the couch and relax. He returned his horse to the stable, looking around at the all the stalls. "Well, look at that. That girl really did get some work done today. Maybe she would be a good addition to the ranch." Jake smiled and turned to walk towards the house, intent on making sure Lilly knew how proud he was of her work.

  As he opened the back door, amazing smells of roast beef, potatoes and sweet apple cinnamon graced his nose. He saw Lilly bending over and looking into the stove as he walked into the kitchen. Mmmm hmm. That girl doesn't know what she's doing to me right now bending over like that. Jake's thoughts wandered to how he could thank her for what she'd done that day. As she stood up, he wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her neck. "It looks like you have been very well behaved today, young lady," he whispered as he kissed along her collar bone.

  Lilly felt her whole body tingling. His kisses were so soft and sweet on her neck. She knew exactly how she wanted to end this day. She didn't care what he said, she had to have him. Every part of him. She turned around in his arms and clasped her hands around the back of his neck to reach up to kiss his mouth.   Just as Jake was about to pick her up and carry her off to bed, Sylvia walked in the door and cleared her throat. "Looks like everyone is here for dinner," she noted and gave the two a knowing smile.

  "Smells great, Sylvia!" Jake exclaimed, walking to the fridge to grab some water.

  "What's the special occasion? You never make apple pie unless it's a holiday or my birthday."

  Lilly turned to hide her smile as Sylvia walked over and put her hands on her shoulders. "I didn't make the apple pie, Jake. Lilly did," Sylvia said.

  Jake stopped gulping down his water and looked at Lilly. She turned away to face the oven. Jake walked over and put his hand on her arm.

  Lilly turned a bright red when Jake sidled up next to her. She pretended to look in the oven to check on the pie. "Sylvia helped me. I didn't how to make it like you like it. I'm sure I probably messed it up somehow," she mumbled as she fiddled with the potholders.

  Jake pulled the potholders out of her hands and put his hands on either side of her face to look at her. "If you made it, I'm sure it will be wonderful," he said and pressed a light kiss on her lips.

  Lilly shyly looked down and gave a small nod. Before she could get any more embarrassed, she pulled the pie out and set it on the rack to cool. All three of them sat at the table to begin eating. Jake explained to Sylvia how much work Lilly had done in the stables that day. He didn't want to worry them with the fence activity so he only mentioned that he spent the afternoon repairing it with one of the men. Once they all finished, Jake volunteered to help clean up the kitchen with Lilly.

  "Thank you for the pie, sweetheart," Jake said as they washed and dried the dishes next to one another. He bumped hips with her to get her to respond, but it was really more of his hip bumping her rib since he was so much taller than her.

  Lilly giggled at his playfulness. She loved playful Jake but knew that a part of her liked his overbearing, dominant side too. "You're welcome," she said quietly. "I just wanted to do something nice for you."

  "You did quite a few nice things for me today," he said warmly. "I didn't expect you to clean out the stable. You did a really great job. I am so proud of you."

  "You are?" She asked, honestly. She really wanted to please him. His praise didn't seem to come often or lightly with his workers, but when he was proud he really seemed to openly show it.

  "I don't ever want you riding alone, do you understand me?" he said that Friday after Jim called him to help with an issue with some sick cattle.

  "But I'm a good rider! You even said so yourself!" Lilly countered as she walked Raven into the stable.

  "And you are, but you still don't know the land yet and I'm not taking any chances of you getting lost and hurt somewhere by yourself," Jake replied, getting more frustrated with her reluctance to listen to him on certain issues.

  "This is so ridiculous! The rest of the ranch staff can ride by themselves!" Lilly was nearly screaming now as she slung the horse bit and reins onto the wall peg.
