The Spear of Tyranny

by Grant R. Jeffrey

This was the beginning of great tribulation. Romulus would install his image in the Holy of Holies, the false prophet—probably Elijah Reis—would cause it to speak through the power of evil, and men would be required to take a visible mark to demonstrate their allegiance to the Beast . . . or they would die.

Isaac’s eyes moved toward the horizon, where the rooftops of Jerusalem gleamed in the surreal light. Soon these streets would run red with blood again, but only for forty-two months. Then the reign of evil would end.

He moved toward one of the new, shining walls and pressed his hand to it, marveling at the care the builders had exercised in its construction. Those who built this Temple had considered everything but the Messiah. They had invited a shepherd to give them peace and prosperity, and that shepherd had turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

He was still standing there, lost in thought, when Thomas Parker approached. “It’s like a war,” Thomas said, running his hands over his arms as if he’d taken a chill. “We know we will suffer and give our lives. It is all written down.”

“It’s more than that.” Isaac gave his friend a smile. “Revelation says that the people who are destined for prison will be arrested and taken away. Those who are destined for death will be killed. But we are not to be dismayed, for this is our opportunity to endure and have faith.” Isaac paused, letting the silence stretch, then he added, “This war is already won. God is the victor, and we are his children. So let us fight the fight and finish the course. I know that at least 144,000 of us will come out as survivors.”

Parker looked at Isaac with a wry smile hidden in his eyes. “Well, that’s fine for you to say, you’re Jewish and you’ve made it this far, so the odds are pretty good that you’re one of the sealed ones. But what’s a believing Gentile like me supposed to do?”

Isaac hooked an arm over his friend’s shoulder and looked up at the shining Temple. “We can overcome Romulus by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. We will not love our lives so much as to shrink from death. Romulus knows his time is short, but we who follow the Lamb will overcome with the King of kings and Lord of lords.”

He looked out to the horizon where the Judean hills blended into the crimson-tinted sky. “Soon the Lamb will come from heaven on a white horse. He will wear a robe dipped in blood, and the armies of heaven will follow him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Sarah will be with him. And if either of us dies before the end, we’ll be with him, too. All those who trust in Jesus will ride in the army of heaven.”

“I’ll admit that I’m looking forward to that battle,” Parker said, his eyes alight as he looked toward the heavens. “Gives me something to work for.”

Isaac nodded as his own heart filled with bottomless peace. “Out of the Lamb’s mouth will come a sharp sword with which to strike down Romulus and his father, the devil. The Spear of Longinus will not be able to stand against the sword of the Spirit of God.”
