‘Goal!’ Sonny shouted triumphantly, grinning from ear to ear and high-fiving Joe. Chris collected the ball from the patio where it had rolled, and caught me staring. He winked and bounced the ball, turning to jog back to his spot.

‘Let’s see if you can get another one before we go,’ he challenged.

‘Do you think Grace and Ali will like their new home?’ Isla asked, licking her finger.

  ‘I think so.’

‘Who’s going to live in the attic now?’

  ‘No one.’

‘Not Chris?’ Meg piped up, her chin smeared with chocolate butter cream.

  ‘No, he lives with Mark.’

‘But what if he wants to live here?’

‘We’re happy with how things are.’

‘But might he move in one day?’ Isla asked hopefully. ‘Like Carrie and Daddy?’

I smiled at her concerned face. Isla the old soul, needing everything to be fair in love and war.

‘Maybe, darling. We’ll have to wait and see.’

We hope you enjoyed this book.

  Acknowledgment

Without sounding like an Awards Ceremony speech, there are a few people I need to thank. Firstly, my four parents for supporting me in my darkest hour, as well as my brother and sister-in-law and two sisters. I would have been totally lost without all my friends who held me together on a daily basis. Special thanks to Sharon, Heather, Rachel, Andy, Tasha, Jane, Austin, Nick, Claire, Katie HT, Katie N, Pippa, Tamsyn, Anna, Louise, Andrea, Adrienne, Fi, Shelley and Isabelle. Thanks to Charlie, my agent, who took me on when I was on skid row. He believed in The Single Mums’ Mansion from day one when it was a sketchy idea based on an anonymous blog I had written to keep me sane during my divorce. Thanks also to my husband, Neil, because he thinks he’s the unsung hero behind the scenes in all of this. He is actually, I couldn’t have written it without his support. Thank you Katie, Susie, Vicki and Andy for reading an early draft, spotting mistakes, and Vicki for making me tone it down (or we would now be in prison). Finally, thanks to Sarah Ritherdon at Aria Fiction for expert editorial advice, and everyone working at Head of Zeus for giving my book a home and making it real. I am very grateful indeed.

A special note to my kids: This is all fiction. End of.
