‘Why did you want to have the first night of our honeymoon here?’ he asked quietly into her hair.
‘Because this is where I found you, and myself too.’ She sighed and hid a tiny yawn against his bare shoulder. ‘I’m going to love spending the rest of our honeymoon in your house in Tahiti, but tonight is perfect…’
She no longer cynically supposed that this transcendent joy would fade after a couple of years; she knew now that other emotions—deeper, stronger, more intense as the years went by—would join it, adding to a happiness that seemed almost too great to bear.
With Alex she was completely safe—as safe as he was with her. Together, she thought dreamily, there was nothing they couldn’t face down and win.
Smiling, she whispered his name and slid into sleep, secure in the protection of their love.
