“In that case, you’d better go home and get some sleep. Come on, I’ll walk you out.”
Putting the vacuum cleaner away, he said, “You don’t have to do that.”
“I have to lock up anyway, so I’ll just say goodnight at the door.”
He grabbed his schoolbooks and headed for the door. She held it open until he got into his car and started the engine.
She was just about to close the door when a sound made her jump. It was faint at first, then louder. She’d heard that sound before. It was the unmistakable mewling of a kitten. Consuelo peeked around the door to get a better look. The full moon outlined a black kitten. He crouched just to the right of the door. If Consuelo had swung the door wider, she would’ve hit him.
Forgetting Enrique, she walked over and looked down at the feline. It couldn’t have been more than six weeks old.
“Don’t tell me. You got dumped, right?”
He rubbed against her ankle.
“Don’t you try to ankle-polish your way into my good graces, because it’s not going to work.” She felt his rough tongue licking her skin and she flinched. “Ooh, stop that.”
As she bent over and picked him up, his motorized purr grew louder and he settled himself more comfortably against her chest.
“Well, maybe for one meal...but that’s all.”
She held him up so she could look into his eyes. “And we’d better get something straight right now. There’s absolutely no place in my heart for a little vagabond like you, you got that?”
The feline meowed and closed his eyes, then purred louder as she hugged him to her chest.
“I don’t think he believes you,” a male voice said from behind her.
Startled, Consuelo whirled around, almost dropping the kitten.
“Jake! His name tore from her throat in surprise. Dios mio, I’m not ready for this, she thought. “You frightened me half to death,” she said and glanced around nervously.
“You should be more careful out here. I might have been a thief or worse.”
He was much worse, she thought as a slight tremor started somewhere in the pit of her stomach. A thief might’ve made her heart pound with fear, but he wouldn’t have made it hurt like it was doing now.
The kitten balked at being held too tightly and struggled in her grip. She stared at Jake, not knowing what else to say.
His cool green eyes were fixed on the cat before they lifted to meet hers. “I think he’s getting a little impatient. Why don’t you invite me in so you can feed him?”
