  Buchan, Ginger, Tisha, and Sheena—Children of Fiona and Ernie. [MOBY]

  Buchan, Seaumais—An elderly resident of the Ridge who has been in ill health, but his family chose not to seek out Claire to treat him; according to folklore, when he dies, he will guard the graveyard until the next burial. [Ashes]

  Buchanan, Alexander; Sawny—A pipe-smoking acquaintance of Duncan Innes, staying at River Run and possibly mistaken for a ghost by wee Jem. [Ashes]

  Buchanan, DeWayne—Ninian Hamilton’s son-in-law, who attempts to help his father-in-law in a fight; his involvement is curtailed by Major MacDonald firing his gun into the air, which startles all the participants into a momentary lull. [Fiery Cross]

  Buchanan, Dougie—A friend from Roger’s youth and one of his gang of friends in Inverness. [Ashes]

  Buchanan, Mrs.—One of the attendees at the Gathering, she presents Brianna with a wedding gift of embroidery thread, to decorate her funeral clothes in the event Brianna should die in childbirth. [Fiery Cross]

  Buckman, Joe—A militiaman. [MOBY]

  Bug, Arch—The factor hired to oversee the smooth running of the farm on Fraser’s Ridge, former tacksman of Clan Grant but displaced after the Highland Clearances. He later proves to be a treacherous foe to the Frasers, especially Young Ian. Blaming Ian for his wife’s death (with reason), he vows vengeance on the young man and tracks him ultimately to Philadelphia, where he nearly makes good on his threats. But he’s prevented by Rollo from killing either Rachel or Ian and is then killed by William. [All]

  Bug, Murdina—Arch Bug’s beloved wife, housekeeper and cook for the Frasers, and general busybody of the Big House on Fraser’s Ridge. While presumably fond of the Frasers, her only true devotion is to her husband—and thus to his desire to recover the Jacobite gold. While attempting to help him do this, she is discovered in the dark by Jamie and Ian and fires at them. Not knowing who their adversary is, Young Ian shoots an arrow at the shadowy figure—and is appalled to find that he has killed Mrs. Bug. [Fiery Cross, Ashes, Echo]

  Bulstrode—Young butler at Gerald Siverly’s estate in Ireland. [SP]

  Bumppo, Natty; Hawkeye—A reference to James Fenimore Cooper’s famous literary figure “Leatherstocking” (known also as “Hawkeye,” as well as his given name of Nathaniel Bumppo). If one charts the travels and adventures of Mr. Bumppo through Cooper’s novels, it’s entirely possible (and even likely) that he might have been where fortune (and this author) placed him in the summer of 1778.   Buncombe, Captain—Jack Randall’s predecessor as garrison commander at Fort William. [MOBY]

  x Burgoyne, General John (aka Gentleman Johnny)—(1722–1792) One of the British generals under Lord Germain’s command. He was victorious at Fort Ticonderoga but, due to miscommunication and overconfidence, was forced to surrender his entire army of 5,800 to the larger, better equipped Patriot army led by Horatio Gates.   Burkhardt, Herr—The butler at Mayrhofer’s home, who notices the new English servant hired to apparently “guard” Frau Mayrhofer. [PM]

  Burns, Annie—The daughter of a Wilmington landlady, her claim of seeing poisonous snakes while berry-picking causes her mother to offer the use of a flintlock to the Fraser/MacKenzie berry-picking party. [Fiery Cross]

  Burns, Mrs.—The landlady in Wilmington with whom the Fraser women remain while the men are off hunting Stephen Bonnet. [Fiery Cross]

  Butler, Gilbert—Local Edenton smuggler and an associate of Neil Forbes. He assists Forbes in abducting Brianna to give to Bonnet and sells Jocasta Cameron’s slave Phaedre to Bonnet, as well. [Ashes]

  Byrd, Jack—Older brother to Lord John’s valet, Tom, and formerly a footman for Joseph Trevelyan. He has assisted Lord John in London detective work. [PM, HS]

  Byrd, Tom—Lord John’s valet, a young man previously unskilled as a personal servant; through his diligence and willingness to learn, he becomes a loyal friend and servant to Lord John, accompanying him on his frequent military postings. [PM, SU, BL, HS, CA, PZ]

  Byrnes, Rob—A member of Jamie’s militia at Alamance. (Also a crime novelist friend of the author.) [Fiery Cross]

  C

  Cairistiona—One of three sisters who were tenants of Lallybroch; the croft in which she lived was burned out after Culloden. [SP]

  Calder, Henry, Sir—Commander of the Forty-ninth Regiment. [MOBY]

  x Caldwell, Reverend—(1725–1824) David Caldwell, a moderate Presbyterian preacher from Greensboro, performs the marriage ceremony between Brianna and Roger at the Gathering, after Catholic priest Father Kenneth Donahue is arrested by powerful political factions. Later, Caldwell assists Roger in his own endeavors in becoming a Presbyterian minister. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Callahan, Michael—Rob Cameron’s archaeologist friend from Orkney, who is interested in excavating the stone church at Lallybroch, deeming it an old site, possibly Pictish; also one of the gang who attempt to kidnap Brianna and the children. [Echo, MOBY]

  Calls-in-the-Forest—The Cherokee mother of Bird, she is sent to help Jamie relax and be at peace; after instructing Jamie to talk to ease his mind, she combs his hair while burning sweet herbs. [Ashes]

  Calvert—Soldier from Quarry’s regiment whom Lord John wishes to accompany him while investigating Sergeant O’Connell’s death. [PM]

  x Cameron, Alexander (aka Scotchee)—(ca. 1730–1781) Loyalist and deputy to the Southern Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Cameron was an influential man among the Cherokee; under British authority, he influenced the Cherokee to side with the Loyalists but had to maintain a delicate balance between the Indians and settlers so as not to inflame Patriot sentiments through indiscriminate attacks from the Indians on whites, which could possibly push settlers toward the Rebel cause.   Cameron, Clementina—Jocasta’s widowed eldest daughter by John Cameron. Jocasta never knew if Clementina and her family were burned out or starved out of the Scottish home she shared with her sister Seonag during the months following Culloden. [Fiery Cross]

  Cameron, Hector—Jamie Fraser’s uncle by marriage; husband to Jocasta MacKenzie Cameron, Jamie’s aunt. He is one of three men who each receive ten thousand pounds of gold meant for Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army; Hector secretly transports his from Scotland to the colonies after the fall of Culloden, using it frugally to set up his plantation, River Run, near Cross Creek.   Cameron, Janie—One of the children attending Bree’s school lessons at her cabin on the Ridge. [Fiery Cross]

  Cameron, Jocasta Isobeail MacKenzie—see “Jocasta Innes.”

  Cameron, John—Jocasta Cameron’s first husband. She was wed to him while no more than a child herself; he fathered her daughter Clementina. [Fiery Cross]

  Cameron, Morna—Hector Cameron’s only daughter and Jocasta’s youngest daughter, who was accidentally shot in the head by Hector after their coach was accosted by a party of British soldiers. [Fiery Cross]

  Cameron, Rob—Brianna’s insubordinate co-worker at the hydroelectric dam, uncle of one of Jem’s classmates, and the instigator of nasty tricks on Brianna and Jem; he’s a dangerous (and possibly unhinged) man, who needs to be watched. This assumption is borne out when he kidnaps Jem, having learned that Jem is the only person (in 1980) who knows the location of the Spaniard’s gold—and, even more intriguingly, may be able to time-travel. He successfully decoys Roger and his ancestor, Buck MacKenzie, into the stones by making them think he has taken Jem through into the past. Meanwhile, he stashes Jem under the Loch Errochty dam and goes to Lallybroch to settle a few personal scores with (who he assumes is) a helpless Brianna. He’s wrong in this assumption but escapes from the priest’s hole at Lallybroch (after Brianna has clubbed him with a cricket bat and put him there) and makes another try, with reinforcements. The danger he poses to her children causes Brianna to flee Scotland with them and finally to decide to leave the twentieth century in search of Roger. [Echo, MOBY]

  Cameron, Seonag—Jocasta’s daughter by her third husband, Black Hugh

  Campbell, Angus Og—One of the residents on Fraser’s Ridge. While too old to join the militia Jamie is forced to gather, he has several nephews who will be mustered for the cause. [Fiery Cross]

  x Campbell, Archibald, Lt. Col.—(unknown) Commander of the Seventy-first Foot, Fraser’s Highlanders, during the brief Battle of Savannah. [MOBY]

  x Campbell, Farquard—(unknown) A prominent member of Cape Fear’s Scottish community and a close friend to Jocasta Cameron. A law-abiding man with a scrupulous conscience, he is a local magistrate, as well as a planter; at the Mount Helicon Gathering he is asked to meet with Lieutenant Hayes and other powerful leaders of the region.   Campbell, Jenny ban—A neighbor woman of the Frasers who has outlived two husbands and safely delivered eight children. [Fiery Cross]

  Campbell, Mr.—The personnel manager at the hydroelectric authority office, who is shocked that Brianna—a woman—insists on applying for the position of plant inspector rather than secretary. [Echo]

  x Campbell, Mr.—(1705–1780) Rev. James Campbell of the Barbecue Church in Sanford was the first official Presbyterian minister in North Carolina who accepted a call to minister from the parishioners and stayed. [Fiery Cross]

  Campbell, Rabbie—Farquard Campbell’s youngest son. At his father’s request, he summons Jamie and Claire and shows them the location of the missing priest, Father Kenneth, at the Gathering. [Fiery Cross]

  Campbell, Rachel—Farquard Campbell’s young and rather muddleheaded wife and mistress of his Cross Creek plantation. Her husband dotes on her and teases her about her excitement in meeting Flora MacDonald at River Run plantation. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Campbell, Ronnie—One of Farquard Campbell’s numerous offspring, and an exuberant guest at Jocasta and Duncan’s wedding; after too many celebratory drinks, he accidentally shoots DeWayne Buchanan in the arm. After the victim is treated, a remorseful Ronnie proceeds to ply him with alcohol for an effective painkiller. [Fiery Cross]

  x Carleton, Guy, Sir—(1724–1808) After Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown, Carleton was appointed Britain’s commander in chief for all North America forces during the Revolutionary War; he led the defense of Quebec in 1775, then later oversaw the evacuation of British citizens from New York in 1783.   x Carmichael, Alexander, Reverend—(1832–1912) Scottish writer and folklorist who traveled around the country collecting traditional songs, prayers, and chants; he compiled them into a multi-volume written work titled Carmina Gadelica, which helped preserve the ancient (often pre-Christian) Celtic culture from an oral history to a written one.   Carmichael, Geordie—The man who raped Jenny’s daughter, Maggie, and brother to Maggie’s husband, Paul. [MOBY]

  Carmichael, Paul—Maggie Murray’s lawful husband. [MOBY]

  Carmichael, Wally—The child conceived through rape but raised as Maggie and her husband Paul’s true child. [MOBY]

  Carruthers, Captain Charles; Charlie—A former sexual partner and military comrade of Lord John’s during his wild period of grieving after Hector’s death at Culloden; an honor-bound man much like Lord John and his brother, Charlie was notable for a rare deformity: he had a second small hand growing out of the palm of one hand—which was functional in movement, something Lord John remembers erotically.   Castellotti, Duc di—A dissipated Italian nobleman, he accompanied Charles Stuart on his drunken ramblings through Paris in the months before the Rising. [SP]

  x Caswell, George—A guest at Jocasta’s wedding and the son of Richard Caswell. Both Caswells are drawn into a brawl between Ninian Hamilton and Robert Barlow. [Fiery Cross]

  Caswell, Mrs.—The wife of wedding combatant George Caswell, she escorts him from the brawl while applying a cloth to his bleeding nose. [Fiery Cross]

  Caswell, Richard—Father of George Caswell and also a guest at Jocasta’s wedding. He is drawn into the brawl between Ninian Hamilton and Robert Barlow. [Fiery Cross]

  Caswell, Richard; Dickie; “Mother”—The proprietor of Lavender House, a meeting place for homosexual men; he can provide the information Lord John seeks—for a price. He is also a moneylender and associate of Captain Bates. [PM, BL]

  Caulfield, Phineas Graham—A prominent Philadelphia Loyalist who tries to come to Hal’s aid when the latter has an asthma attack in the street. Claire tries to dissuade him, but the ruckus attracts a hostile crowd, from which Claire and Hal barely escape. [MOBY]

  Cawdor, Bobby—A friend from Roger’s youth and one of his gang of friends in Inverness. [Ashes]

  Chemodurow, Iva—Wife of swineherd Mikhail. (The Chemodurows are Real People: friends or acquaintances written in—with their permission—for fun.) [Fiery Cross]

  Chemodurow, Karina—Daughter of Russian immigrants Iva and Mikhail. When Roger crashes into her in the darkness of Wylie’s boathouse, she thinks he’s assaulting her, then eagerly complies and is almost disappointed when Roger declines her charms. [Fiery Cross]

  Chemodurow, Mikhail—Russian swineherd hired by Phillip Wylie to transport Russian boars to Wylie’s plantation, where the boars would be released to reproduce for sport hunting. [Fiery Cross]

  Chenowyth, Mr. and Mrs.—The Chenowyths are the family with whom Claire is temporarily billeted at Coryell’s Ferry, when she and Jamie rendezvous there with Washington’s troops. [MOBY]

  Cherry, Captain Robert; Bob—Adjutant officer for Lord John’s regiment in Jamaica. [PZ]

  Chester, Mr.—The owner of a brig in Wilmington harbor that carried Lord John Grey and his stepson, William, from Virginia to North Carolina for William’s first military posting. [Ashes]

  x Chew, Miss—(unknown) One of the daughters of prominent Philadelphia lawyer and Loyalist Benjamin Chew. She flirts with William Ransom at the mischianza held at the Chews’ large home in honor of General Howe, who was being replaced by Sir Henry Clinton. [Echo]

  Chinless Ned, the Ponce—See “Edward Markham.”

  Chisholm, Charley—One of Geordie Chisholm’s teenage sons. [Fiery Cross]

  Chisholm, Geoff—One of the Chisholm children. [Fiery Cross]

  Chisholm, Geordie—An ex-prisoner from Ardsmuir; at the end of the Gathering, he and his family travel back to the Ridge, where they take up residence with the Frasers and two other families until a cabin can be built for the growing family. [Fiery Cross]

  Chisholm, Grannie—The elderly mother of Geordie Chisholm; while traveling with the Frasers from the Gathering to Fraser’s Ridge, she narrowly escapes being trampled by Jamie’s high-strung horse, Gideon. [Fiery Cross]

  Chisholm, Mrs.—Geordie Chisholm’s wife and the mother of five. [Fiery Cross]

  Chisholm, Thomas, Anthony, and Toby—Geordie Chisholm’s younger sons, ranging in age from five through eight and dubbed “the spawn of Satan” by Mrs. Bug. They ransack Claire’s surgery and cause mayhem in the Big House while Geordie and his older sons are off with Jamie and the militia. [Fiery Cross]

  Chrissy—A maidservant in the Shippen household. [MOBY]

  Christie, Allan—An immigrant from Scotland with his father, Tom, and sister, Malva. He puts Malva up to accusing Jamie as the father of Malva’s unborn child, hoping to gain some Fraser wealth to support himself and his sister away from Fraser’s Ridge. After Malva is murdered, Claire finds a suicidal Allan by her graveside, and he confesses to having impregnated his sister and then killed her, Ian, hiding in the nearby woods, shoots and kills Allan with his bow and arrow.   Christie, Edgar—Tom Christie’s brother in Scotland and Malva’s true father, he cared for Tom’s wife, Mona, and his son, Allan, while Tom was imprisoned in Ardsmuir after the Rising; in return, Mona killed him. [Ashes]

  Christie, Malva—Daughter of Tom Christie and sister of Allan. After showing great interest in medicine, she becomes Claire’s apprentice—then uses her newfound know
ledge to almost kill Claire and her own father, before destroying Claire’s trust in her by exposing her secret pregnancy and naming Jamie as the father. Jamie and Claire both know Malva is lying but don’t know why. Malva’s loose ways eventually become known and she is mysteriously murdered in Claire’s garden. Claire finds her moments after the crime is committed and performs a cesarean delivery, but the child also dies within moments. Claire is then accused of Malva’s murder and mutilating the corpse for revenge. [All]

  Christie, Mona—Tom Christie’s wife and Malva’s mother, suspected of being a witch. When Tom was sent to Ardsmuir, he entrusted his wife to his brother Edgar’s care; Mona seduced Edgar, who impregnated her; she later killed him. She was found guilty of murder and sentenced to hang for her crimes while her children were forced to watch. [Ashes]

  Christie, Thomas; Tom—One of the former Ardsmuir prisoners who locates Jamie on Fraser’s Ridge after being transported; he volunteers his services as schoolmaster. There are two concerns with Christie’s residence on the Ridge: he is an ardent Protestant, and he harbors a grudge against Jamie from their time in Ardsmuir. As time goes by, despite his gruff demeanor he develops feelings for Claire and acts bravely on her behalf. [Fiery Cross, Ashes, Echo]

  Cinnamon, John—The child of Malcolm Stubbs (husband to Lord John’s cousin Olivia) and an Indian mistress; Lord John gives the child to the Catholic mission near Quebec to raise, and he agrees to provide funds for the child’s welfare as long as a lock of hair is sent annually. William encounters Cinnamon years later in Quebec, where the latter is working as a guide, and the two spend the winter together, snowbound. [CA, Echo]
