  Dundas, Christopher, Lieutenant—A young Scottish officer in charge of a survey party assigned to spy on the French forces to ascertain the size and quantity of the enemy’s artillery. [SU]

  Dunkling, Lieutenant—One of Lord Dunsmore’s young officers in Virginia, who will sell Duncan Innes guns and powder to pass on to General Donald MacDonald for his Highland regiment, to help crush the militia. [Ashes]

  x Dunmore, Lord—(1730–1809) John Murray, Fourth Earl of Dunmore and last royal governor of Virginia. In order to allay plantation owners’ fears of slave uprisings within the colonies, he passed a freedom proclamation for all slaves and indentured men who agreed to join the royal militia and defend against the Patriot forces. [Ashes]

  Dunning, Mrs.—Another of Wilmington’s prominent hostesses, her musical evenings are in direct competition with those of Mrs. Crawford; Mrs. Dunning also utilizes a local poet to recite phrases both tragic and comedic. [Fiery Cross]

  Dunphy, Mr.—Former Philadelphia resident and Loyalist printer, was Fergus’s competition. [MOBY]

  Dunsany, Geneva; Lady Geneva—Eldest daughter of the Dunsany family of Helwater, she takes a shine to Jamie Fraser while he’s a paroled groom there and blackmails him into sharing her bed before her marriage to a nobleman twice her age; Geneva becomes pregnant after their one night together and dies soon after giving birth to Jamie’s son, William Ransom.   Dunsany, Gordon—The only son of Lord and Lady Dunsany and heir to Helwater; a close friend of Lord John, he was killed during the Rising. [BL, SP]

  Dunsany, Isobel—Younger daughter of Lord and Lady Dunsany of Helwater, younger sister to Geneva. Following the death of her sister in childbed, Isobel becomes foster mother to Geneva’s child, William, and later marries Lord John Grey, who thus becomes the boy’s stepfather and guardian.   Dunsany, Lady—Wife of Lord Dunsany, mother of Geneva and Isobel, and grandmother to William—the Ninth Earl of Ellesmere. Acute observation causes her to suspect the actual parentage of her grandchild; thus she offers to arrange Jamie’s pardon so that he can leave Helwater. He declines her offer, wishing to stay near the infant William. [BL, SP]

  Dunsany, Lord—A minor aristocrat and friend of Lord John Grey who accepts Jamie Fraser (under the alias Alexander MacKenzie) as a groom on his estate, Helwater, as a favor to Lord John. He arranges his daughter Geneva’s marriage to the elderly Earl of Ellesmere, hoping this will ensure her shortly becoming a wealthy young widow and a countess. [BL, SP, Ashes]

  Eats Turtles—A Mohawk man Ian knows from his time in Snaketown; he finds Ian after the stillbirth of Ian’s daughter. [Ashes, Echo, MOBY]

  Edgars, Gillian—See “Geillis Duncan.”

  Eevis—Large, aggressive farm dog set on Roger and Buck by a farmer while they’re hunting Roger’s dad. [MOBY]

  Elise—Stephan von Namtzen’s young daughter, who, along with her brother, is forced to live with Stephan’s mother while he is fulfilling his military duty. [SU, SP]

  Ellesmere, Earl of (Old)—Ludovic, the Eighth Earl of Ellesmere; the elderly husband to Geneva Dunsany and putative father of William, Viscount Ashness. Killed by Jamie Fraser while threatening the life of the newborn infant whom he knows to be the result of cuckoldry. [BL, SP]

  Ellesmere, Ninth Earl of—See “William Ransom.”

  Elliott, Miss—One of the impressionable ladies present at the Duke de Chaulnes’s Paris salon, where Jamie recounts his story of the Iroquois amputating and eating his finger. [Echo]

  Elspeth, Nanny—Geneva and Isobel Dunsany’s elderly nurse, she accompanies Geneva to her new marriage home but returns to Helwater to help raise the child when Geneva and Lord Ellesmere both die on the same day. [BL, SP]

  Emile—The sub-gardener and lover of Percival Beauchamp at Baron Amandine’s estate, Trois Flèches. He apparently reminds Percy of a younger Lord John. [Echo]

  Emily (aka Wakyo’teyeshsnonhsa, “Works With Her Hands”)—Ian’s Mohawk wife, unable to carry a pregnancy to term with Ian; devastated, Ian is forced to leave the Mohawk after the third miscarriage. Emily turns to Sun Elk, full-blood Mohawk brave, and is finally able to have children. [Echo]

  Emmanuel—Stephen Bonnet’s butler and bodyguard, one of the Ibo tribe of Africa; he believes in the superstitions of his homeland. A large man with a cruel streak, he keeps Brianna under guard and beats her. She later stabs him to death with an ivory corset busk. [Ashes]

  Endicott, Anne—Elder daughter of the Endicotts. [MOBY]

  Endicott, Margaret; Peggy—Age nine, the youngest of the Endicott children. [MOBY]

  Endicott, Mr.—Loyalist traveling out of Philadelphia with the British army. [MOBY]

  Endicott, Mrs.—Wife of Mr. Endicott. [MOBY]

  Endicott, Sally—Middle daughter of the Endicotts. [MOBY]

  Entwidge—One of the regimental surgeons assigned to Hal’s regiment in Prussia. [BL]

  Erlande, Mademoiselle—One of the ladies present at the Duke de Chaulnes’s Paris salon where Jamie recounts his entertaining story of the Iroquois amputating and eating his finger; she is observed in some sort of wanton behavior with Mr. Lyle, the man Jamie accompanied to the salon. [Echo]

  Esmé—Hal’s first wife, a beautiful French woman who was seduced by Nathaniel Twelvetrees and died in childbirth along with her first child. [BL, SP]

  Esmeralda—Mandy’s red-haired rag doll. [MOBY]

  Ethan and Johnny—Two children Lord John witnesses running loose on the Philadelphia docks when a small riot breaks out among British soldiers and local citizens waiting for the ferry. Lord John is despondent over recent bad news and, instead of taking charge of the situation, walks away. [Echo]

  Eugenie—One of the grooms at Helwater. [SP]

  Eulalie, Madame—An upper-scale seamstress in Charleston, South Carolina, hired to sew maternity clothes for Amaranthus Grey. [MOBY]

  Eustace—Benedicta Grey’s favorite dog, an elderly spaniel. [PM]

  Evans, Corporal—An enlisted man in William’s regiment on Long Island when William becomes lost in the fog. [Echo]

  Evans, Mr.—Mrs. Raven’s first husband, who had been a fisherman and violent drunkard; he would cut off the noses or ears of those who displeased him and nail them to the goat shed, which, according to Mrs. Raven, caused said parts to shrivel up like dried mushrooms. [Echo]

  Evans, Thomas, Captain—One of William’s fellow officers and tentmates on the road to Monmouth. [MOBY]

  Everett, Colonel—An officer at Saratoga who promises Claire two assistants to help her with any battle injuries. [Echo]

  Everett, George—A young dark-haired London contemporary of Lord John’s; a brief affair with him caused the scandal that sent Lord John to Scotland as the governor of Ardsmuir Prison. He extends an invitation to Lord John to become a member of the Hellfire Club. [HF, PM]

  Everett, Mr.—The South Carolina plantation owner to whom Tom Christie was indentured as a schoolteacher after being transported from Scotland when Ardsmuir was closed. After Everett’s death from influenza, Christie was forced to look for employment elsewhere. [Fiery Cross]

  Ezra—A member of Richard Brown’s gang that arrests Claire for the alleged murder of Malva Christie, and Jamie as an accessory; Claire shoots Ezra during the arrest, and even though she offers to treat his wound, he refuses. During the trek toward Wilmington to find a justice to try Jamie and Claire, his wound festers and he falls from his horse, dead. [Ashes]

  F

  x Fanning, Edmund—(1739-1808) Crown attorney and clerk of the Superior Court of Orange County, N.C.; Fanning was a close friend of Governor Tryon’s and received several select positions due to those allegiances. He was attacked by Regulators for his close association with the governor as well as the public’s b
elief in his malfeasance. [Fiery Cross]

  Fanny—A Belgian draft horse belonging to Lord Dunsany, she goes missing, only to be found with Isobel’s maid Betty Mitchell upon her back. [SP]

  Fanshawe, Douglas—Owner of Mudlington, his gunpowder mill comprises one-third of the Sussex consortium headed by Edgar DeVane; his only son is Marcus who was severely injured during an explosion at the gunpowder mill. [HS]

  Fanshawe, Marcus, Captain—The only son of gunpowder-mill owner Douglas Fanshawe, he is critically injured during an explosion at one of the manufacturing sheds; the severe disfigurement of his head and face causes him to wear a black silk mask. [HS]

  Father Alexandre—A Jesuit priest cruelly killed by the Iroquois after fathering a child with a maiden, then refusing to baptize the child. [Echo]

  Father Anselm—A priest visiting Ste. Anne de Beaupré while Jamie is recovering from his treatment by Jack Randall. Father Anselm keeps Jamie company on nights when his ordeal prevents him from sleeping; he also counsels Claire on the morality of time travel. [Ashes]

  Father Fenstermacher—A priest in Hanover who Stephan von Namzten indicates is strict when handing out penance for sinners. [SP]

  Father Gehring—A priest near von Namtzen’s home who is not as liable to hand down strict penance as is Father Fenstermacher. [SP]

  Father Jim—An Irish priest in the London slum called the Rookery, he is to aid the O’Higgins brothers in procuring a body to substitute for Percy’s, thereby completing Percy’s escape from Newgate. [BL]

  Father McCarthy—The elderly Catholic priest at Lallybroch who performed the wedding ceremony between Laoghaire and Jamie. [Echo]

  Faydree—See “Phaedre.”

  Fentiman, Charles, Dr.—A surgeon from Cross Creek and Claire’s medical rival. While not always medically adept—too ready to “bleed” his patients and not very sanitary—he is a sensitive man who genuinely cares for his patients; he is the first to treat the doomed glass-ingesting slave woman at River Run, then later treats Stephen Bonnet for a bullet hole through the testicle.   x Ferdinand, Duke—(1735–1806) A Prussian field marshal with Frederick during the Seven Years’ War. Hal’s regiment is ordered to join him in Prussia. [BL]

  Ferguson, Mr.—The solicitor who employs young Buck MacKenzie as his clerk. [MOBY]

  Ferguson, Sadie, Mrs.—A woman with whom Claire shares a jail cell while in New Bern following Malva’s death. A convicted forger who’s addicted to gin and card-playing, Mrs. Ferguson falsely claims to be Malva’s murderer, as the sentence for murder is less severe than that for forgery. [Ashes]

  x Fermoy, Matthias, General—(ca. 1737–ca. 1780) French soldier of fortune at Fort Ticonderoga who claimed to be an engineer. Upon General Gates’s decision to withdraw quietly and secretly from Burgoyne’s advancing army, Fermoy failed to deliver the message to his entire regiment on Mount Independence and, against orders, set fire to his lodging upon leaving. The fire acted as a bright light to expose the secret withdrawal of the Continental forces. [Echo]

  Fettes, Major—One of Lord John’s officers while on Jamaica. [PZ]

  Ffoulkes, Melchior—A solicitor in Lincoln’s Inn, married to a French woman, and the recipient of military secrets forwarded by Captain Bates, who had been chief aide to General Stanley, Lord John’s new stepfather, prior to a transfer. [BL]

  x Fielding, John, Sir—(1721–1780) The social reformer some called “the Blind Beak,” he was appointed as London chief magistrate and head of the Bow Street Runners when his older brother, Henry, founder of that first paid law-enforcement squad, died. Due to artistic license, a small detail regarding Fielding’s title has changed because John Fielding was not knighted until 1761, four years after Private Matter takes place. [PM]

  Figg, Jerusha, Mrs.—The large, round, free-black woman of uncertain temper and a gift for foul language was hired by Lord John to be his cook at his home in Philadelphia. [Echo, MOBY]

  Figg, Reverend Mortimer—Husband of Mrs. Figg, Lord John’s housekeeper in Philadelphia. [MOBY]

  Filmer, Corporal—One of the militia company belonging to Captain Craddock (who is killed in the Battle of Monmouth).[MOBY]

  Findlay, Annie—Joanie Findlay’s elder daughter, summoned to fetch Joanie’s brothers to speak to Roger regarding their joining the militia. [Fiery Cross]

  Findlay, Hugh—One of Joan Findlay’s teenage sons, prepared to join Fraser’s militia. [Fiery Cross]

  Findlay, Iain Óg—One of Joan Findlay’s teenage sons, prepared to join Fraser’s militia. [Fiery Cross]

  Findlay, Joan; Auld Joan—Sister to Iain Mhor; one of the residents on Fraser’s Ridge with two capable brothers and two sons old enough to fight with Jamie’s militia. [Fiery Cross]

  Findlay, Joanie; Wee Joanie—Joan Findlay’s younger daughter, who takes over the pot-stirring while her mother takes Roger to meet Iain Mhor regarding the Findlay sons joining the militia. [Fiery Cross]

  Findlay, Major—A British army officer who sends William’s groom, Colenso Baragwanath, in search of William. [MOBY]

  Findlay, Tom—Another of Joanie Findley’s male relatives who join the militia and is in camp after Alamance. [Fiery Cross]

  Finlay, Mary—The young girl caught in a compromising position with Donald McAllister. [MOBY]

  Firouz—The Persian manservant of field professor Quentin Lambert Beauchamp. Firouz helps with Claire’s unconventional upbringing after she is adopted by “Uncle Lamb,” her late father’s only brother. [Fiery Cross]

  FitzGibbons, Michael, Father—Cousin to Jamie Fraser’s godfather, Murtagh, and abbot of Inchcleraun in Ireland. [SP]

  Fitzwalter, Hugh, Sir—An elderly baronet with estates in Sussex, apparently oblivious to the publicly flirtatious actions of his wife. [HF]

  Fitzwalter, Lady—The wife of an elderly baronet from Sussex, she flirts shamelessly with Harry Quarry, who has no qualms about her marital status. [HF]

  Flying Arrow—Mohawk warrior killed during Roger’s rescue from the Kahnyen’kehaka and whose place Ian takes. [MOBY]

  Flynn, Jack—A notorious Irish highwayman scheduled to be hanged at Tyburn. The crush of a “leave-taking” party of well-wishers and friends flooding into Newgate prison prior to his hanging is sure to cause confusion and distraction while Percy Wainwright is spirited out of the prison. [BL]

  Follard, Captain—Captain of the Cruizer, the British ship anchored at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Governor Josiah Martin retreats to the ship, with Claire still in custody, when the Patriots overrun New Bern and set fire to Fort Johnston. [Ashes]

  Forbes, Elspeth—Neil Forbes’s elderly mother, whom he loves dearly; Jamie and Roger use Mrs. Forbes as leverage to discover Brianna’s whereabouts after Neil has her kidnapped by Stephen Bonnet’s men. [Ashes]

  Forbes, Neil—A prominent resident and lawyer in Cross Creek; he brought four gemstones to assist his suit when paying court to Brianna but was rejected and lost the stones to Jamie in a high-stakes card game. Constantly seeking retribution for his imagined slights, he has Brianna kidnapped and given to the pirate Stephen Bonnet. As revenge, Ian cuts Forbes’s ear off, then smokes the ear and carries it in his sporran. (Introduced as Gerald in Drums of Autumn, his name was changed in subsequent books to “Neil.”) [Fiery Cross, Ashes, Echo]

  Fortescue, Mamie, Mrs.—A striking blond woman whom Harry Quarry claims—along with a bottle of wine—at Benedicta Grey’s party celebrating Clive’s victory over the Nawab of Bengal. [PM]

  Fortnum, Anthony, Lieutenant—One of William Ransom’s roommates during the New York occupation with General Howe’s army. [Echo]

  Foster, Harry, Lieutenant—Foster delivers an order from Sir Henry Clinton to William, who decides to ignore said order. [MOBY]

  x Foster, Jedidiah, Colonel—(1726–1779) Harvard-educated lawyer and militia leader from Brookfield, Massachusetts, his regiment was present at the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775, and he was an elected delegate for the First Provincial Congress. [Ashes]


  Fowles, Hugh—Joe Hobson’s young son-in-law, who participates in the Hillsborough riots after being put out of his house by the British sheriff for non-payment of taxes. [Fiery Cross]

  x Fox, George—(1624–1691) Founder of the Quaker religion, or Religious Society of Friends, whose purpose was to live by following examples in the Bible, forsaking violence, and seeking a peaceful life; he believed that women had souls and that personal faith, not education, was all that was required to become a member of the clergy, even for women and children. [Fiery Cross, MOBY]

  x Franklin, Benjamin—(1706–1790) Scientist, writer, printer, politician, and first postmaster general; one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, minister to France, also noted ladies’ man who practiced nude sunbathing in the belief it was beneficial for various health reasons. Lord John observes him doing this during a visit to the Trois Flèches estate. [Echo, MOBY]

  Franz—The young soldier who meets fellow soldier Samson under the bridge to become his lover; later, Lord John pulls him from a badger hole and learns from him of the Austrian forces gathering near. [SU]

  Fraser, Alexander—Brother to Jamie’s father, Brian; abbot of Ste. Anne de Beaupré priory in France. [SP]

  x Fraser, Archibald—(unknown) Younger brother and Young Simon’s heir, also died childless. [MOBY]

  Fraser, Bobby—One of the Frasers of Glenhelm, not Lovat, a very distant clansman to Jamie; he was the man who caught young Arch Bug and cut off his bow fingers when the young man was on a raid against the Frasers at Glenshiels; later both Bobby of Glenhelm and his nephew Leslie were found dead in a ditch—their heads caved in by an ax.
