  Joe—A footman employed at Argus House, the home of Benedicta Grey. He brings the refreshments Lord John’s cousin Olivia apparently insisted that he needs. [BL]

  Joffrey, Lucinda, Lady (introduced as “Amanda” in PM; renamed in subsequent books)—Wife of Sir Richard Joffrey and Harry Quarry’s sister-in-law. She regards Lord John not only as a close friend but also as a possible marriage prospect to one of her many unmarried sisters and cousins. [HF, PM, BL, HS, CA]

  Joffrey, Richard, Sir—Harry Quarry’s half brother and husband to Lady Lucinda (Amanda) Joffrey. [HF, PM, BL HS, CA]

  Johansen, Mr.—One of Fergus’s correspondents, who regularly provides news for L’Oignon. [MOBY]

  Johnny—William Buccleigh MacKenzie’s other friend present when Roger is accosted by Buccleigh and Black-beard. He is instructed to escort Morag back to their camp while Buck deals with Roger MacKenzie. [Fiery Cross]

  Johnson, Antioch—Sinister host and ax-welding madman who invites Denzell, Rachel, and William to spend the night at his home after they take a wrong turn on the road to Albany; the wrong turn nearly costs the trio their lives. [Echo]

  Johnson, Micah, Colonel—Commander of the company that was saved during the Battle of Saratoga, when Jamie broke the British charge and suffered a severe injury to his hand, forcing Claire to finally remove Jamie’s broken finger. [Echo]

  Johnson, Mrs.—The split-tongued wife of Antioch Johnson, who makes Rachel uneasy by staring at her shoes; she helps her husband try to murder the travelers, as they’ve apparently done to others in the past. [Echo]

  x Johnson, Samuel, Doctor—(1709–1784) English author of several published essays and A Dictionary of the English Language (1755), also known as “Johnson’s Dictionary,” he was a popular guest at various literary salons and other social settings. [PM]

  Johnston, Private—One of the soldiers in Percy’s company, who was slightly injured during a brief skirmish with a French foraging party in the Rhine Valley near Crefeld. [BL]

  Jonas, Lady—A popular London socialite with whom Percy Wainwright and Lord John are acquainted. She is a hostess of literary salons, her interesting guests including poets, philosophers, and novelists of the time. [BL, SP]

  Jones, Dai—The blacksmith in the small community where the McGillivrays live, about five miles from the Ridge. [Ashes]

  x Jones, David, Lieutenant—(ca. 1752–after 1778) Loyalist soldier near Ticonderoga who discovers the long-haired scalp of his murdered Loyalist fiancée, Jane McCrea, being submitted as a “bounty” to General Burgoyne by the Wyandot Indians. [Echo]

  Jones, Egbert—A homosexual man known among his comrades as “Miss Irons,” but during the day he’s a cheerful young Welsh blacksmith employed to work on the fence surrounding Benedicta’s Jermyn Street house. [PM]

  Jones, Reginald, Captain—An officer of the Royal Artillery, assigned by the Royal Ordnance Office to determine the cause of the explosions among the cannons; he tries to confiscate the bit of cannon shrapnel Lord John possesses—which was removed from his chest. [HS]

  Jones, Wilbraham—A mild-mannered, effeminate smuggler of tea and other luxury items, who Brianna knows has been supplying Jocasta Cameron with many of her contraband luxuries. [Ashes]

  Jones-Osborn, Colonel—An infantry colonel in attendance at the ordnance meeting, who misinterprets Lord John’s nervous hand-clenching as impatience and agrees that the speaker has droned on long enough. [BL]

  Joseph—See “Ulysses.”

  Josephine—A prostitute at Magda’s, possibly experienced in erotic punishment as part of sex. [PM]

  Josephine from Cornwall—The fictional name Lord John gives to the mollies at Lavender House when trying to track the “woman in green.” [PM]

  Joshua; Josh—One of Jocasta Cameron’s grooms; a slave born in North Carolina, but he speaks both Gaelic and Scots-accented English, as a result of being born on a plantation owned by a man from Aberdeen. He is kidnapped by slave traders on the same night that Phaedre disappears from River Run. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Jowett, Corporal—Soldier from Quarry’s regiment whom Lord John wishes to accompany him while investigating Sergeant O’Connell’s death. [PM]

  Jurgen—Soldier who suggests that the sound of the “crying child” is only wind moaning through a hole in the bridge. [SU]

  K

  Karolous—The large, attractive white stallion belonging to Lord John, given to him as a gift by Landgrave Stephan von Namtzen. [SU, BL]

  Karònya (Mohawk for “Looking at the Sky”)—Karònya was a young maiden from Ian’s Mohawk village who was taken captive by the Abenaki, an enemy tribe to the Mohawk. [Ashes]

  Kebbits, Mrs.—Wife of one of the New Hampshire militiamen, who feeds Ian and Claire after a sinister stranger, looking for Jamie, insults Claire and ruins her kettle of soup by spitting in it. [Echo]

  Keeble, Sergeant—The soldier who was to have drilled Percy on use of a musket but has another commitment; instead, Lord John gives the instruction. [BL]

  Keegan, Mr.—The surgeon’s assistant assigned to Ruysdale’s campaign; he’s put in charge of the surgeon’s tent after the surgeon dies of flux. He cleverly advances the idea that if the troops take matters “into their own hands” prior to sleeping, it will keep the succubus at bay. [SU]

  Kelleher, Mrs.—Fiona and Ernie Buchan’s elderly neighbor in Inverness. Fiona sends Jem running to Mrs. Kelleher’s house to call the police when Rob Cameron shows up at the Buchans’ house. [MOBY]

  Keren-happuch—A Welsh kitchen maid employed at Helwater, who carries a message from Jamie to Betty. (A Real Person, named in compliment to my friend Karen Henry, Queen of the Nitpickers.) [SP]

  Kerr, Duncan—A MacKenzie tacksman, he dies shortly after being found wandering near Ardsmuir, sea-soaked, demented, and babbling of white witches and hidden gold. Jocasta Cameron remembers him as a servant of the mysterious man who received one-third of the gold meant for Charles Stuart and his army during the ’45. [Fiery Cross]

  Keyes—A homosexual man and briefly the cellmate of Captain Bates, who has been accused of sodomy, during his confinement in Newgate Prison; he attempts to force his attentions on Bates but is rebuffed. [BL]

  x King James (James Francis Edward Stuart of Scotland)—(1688–1766) Also called the “Old Pretender,” the Prince of Wales, James VIII of Scotland, and James III of England, he was heir to the exiled Catholic royal dynasty. In 1708 and 1715, he attempted to invade and overthrow British rule in Scotland; he was forced to retreat and live in exile in Italy. [Fiery Cross]

  x King Louis XV—(1710–1774) A Jacobite sympathizer before the ’45 Rising, he had Jamie imprisoned for a duel but set him free after Claire went to the King and begged for Jamie’s release, trading a brief sexual favor for Jamie’s life. [BL, Ashes, Echo]

  x King, the (King George VI of England; Bertie)—(1895–1952) In a discussion with Roger, Claire mentions that she briefly met King George VI during the war when she was a nurse, when he was visiting injured troops. [Echo]

  x Kingston, Robert, Major—(unknown) General Burgoyne’s aide-de-camp after the Battle of Bemis Heights, he relinquished proposals to General Gates and the American army for the British surrender at Saratoga. Jamie comments on Kingston’s red-faced complexion, which was flushed due to the humiliation of being blindfolded and marched through the American camp while carrying the proposal for surrender.   Kirby, Captain—One of the captains under Jamie’s command at Monmouth. [MOBY]

  x Knox, Henry, General—(1750–1806) Chief of artillery under General George Washington, Knox moved more than sixty tons of heavy artillery three hundred miles, from Ticonderoga to Boston, in midwinter, forcing the British army to evacuate Boston. [Echo]

  Koenig, Hanna—Nursemaid to young Siegfried Lowenstein and wife to the dead soldier Pri
vate Koenig; she disappears the night the supposed witch visits young Siegfried’s room. [SU]

  Koenig, Private—A Prussian soldier found dead in the barracks, with suspicious marks on his body; his death is attributed to a nocturnal visit by a succubus, or female demon. [SU]

  Kolodziewicz, Andrej—A former crew member and fellow pilot of Jerry’s “Green Flight,” and his good friend who taught him a smattering of Polish during their off-duty time; he died when his plane was shot down in battle. [LW]

  x Kościuszko, Tadeusz, Colonel (pronounced “kohs-CHOOSH-koh”)—(1746–1817) “Kos” was a Polish émigré and volunteer in the Continental army before being noticed and commissioned as a colonel of engineers by the Continental Congress. Kos was instrumental in his strategic placement and defenses of several forts, bridges, and roadways, including the impregnable fortifications at Saratoga, which ultimately forced the British forces under General John Burgoyne to surrender.   L

  Lachlan, Isaiah—Jacky Lachlan’s father and a member of Roger MacKenzie’s new congregation on Fraser’s Ridge. [Ashes]

  Lachlan, Jacky—One of the young boys on Fraser’s Ridge, who tries to disrupt Roger’s first sermon by setting loose a snake among the parishioners. [Ashes]

  Lachlan, Stuart—Fellow historian and friend of Reverend Wakefield, who shares an interest in the Lovat family. He somehow comes into a possession of a hand-drawn family tree, showing Jamie, Claire, and Brianna; this tree is discovered by Frank Randall, who encloses it with a note of warning to Brianna. [MOBY]

  Lady Belvedere—The hostess of a ball where William claims to have “dishonored” his cousin Dottie, therefore imploring Lord John to convince Hal to allow Dottie and William to wed. Since Dottie and William’s stories don’t match, John knows they’re both lying and means to find out why. [Echo]

  Lady Jane—Dr. Joe Abernathy’s affectionate name for Claire, due to her cultured British accent. [Fiery Cross]

  x Lady Seaforth—(unknown) The earl’s wife who had the Brahan Seer burned to death. [MOBY]

  Lady Windermere—The hostess of a musicale where Dottie claims to have fallen in love with William, therefore imploring Lord John to convince Hal to allow Dottie and William to wed. Since Dottie and William’s stories don’t match, John knows they’re both lying and means to find out why. [Echo]

  x La Fayette, Marquis de (aka Wee Gilbert)—(1757–1834) Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier. The young marquis was a favorite of George Washington’s and accompanied him on the Monmouth campaign, where he first meets and befriends Claire. He commands a body of troops during the battle, but his true importance is the friendship that causes him to send Claire a basket of French goodies when he hears that she’s been wounded. Among the contents of the basket are a much-needed bottle of laudanum and a chunk of Roquefort cheese, which Claire instructs Denzell to pack into her wound (she realizing that the strain of mold that makes Roquefort cheese is a variety of Penicillium).   x Lally, Thomas Arthur (aka Baron de Tollendal)—(1702–1766) One of Charles Stuart’s former aides-de-camp, captured after the Rising but paroled in London under the watchful eyes of the English. [SP]

  Lambert, Widow—The young owner of a home near a mission church in Canada, she rents a room to Charlie Carruthers while he is awaiting trial in a court-martial. [CA]

  Landringham, Miss—A reference to General James Wolfe’s real-life fiancée, Katherine Lowther (1736–1809), who was depicted in a miniature he carried; upon his death at the Battle of Quebec, a request was made to return the small portrait to Katherine’s parents. [CA]

  Landrum, Mrs.—The Fraser family’s landlady in Savannah. [MOBY]

  Latham, Dr.—The official military surgeon for Hal and John’s regiment, called in to stitch Lord John’s wounds after a duel. [SP]

  Laughlin, Constable—WPC Laughlin escorts Brianna and her children back to Lallybroch after the attack by Rob Cameron and his companions. [MOBY]

  Launfal, Private—A private under William’s command on Long Island, placed under arrest by William for attempting to bargain for contraband brandy at a checkpoint the men were supposed to be guarding. [Echo]

  x Learned, Ebenezer, General—(1728–1801) Commander of the Third Continental Regiment. Acting as intermediary, Learned helped negotiate the British evacuation of Boston and took control of the city; he later combined forces with General Benedict Arnold at Bemis Heights, where they charged the Hessians and broke through the enemy lines. [Echo]

  x Leatherlips—(1732–1810) A chief of the Wyandot Indians, one of the tribes employed by General Burgoyne to intimidate the colonists by raids on their homesteads, often killing livestock and setting fire to homes and outbuildings. [Echo]

  LeCarré, Father—The Catholic priest who accepts the mixed-blood child of Malcolm Stubbs—husband to Lord John’s cousin Olivia—and his Indian mistress. [CA]

  Leckie, Jared, Captain—Surgeon with the Second New Jersey. Dr. Leckie gets off on the wrong foot with Claire when he high-handedly tries to appropriate her stock of medical supplies and later denies her entrance to the church where the surgeons are tending the wounded from the Battle of Monmouth. He redeems himself by racing to her rescue when she’s shot outside the church and saves her life by preventing her bleeding to death on the spot. He then infuriates Jamie by abruptly abandoning Claire to go back to his work—but she is alive. [MOBY]

  LeClerc, Father—A French-speaking Jesuit priest on his way from New Orleans to Quebec, with a tendency to shout the only English he knows: “Tally-ho!” He is waylaid to perform the sanctioned wedding ceremony for Jocasta Cameron and Duncan Innes—by a sizable donation from Jocasta to the Society of Jesus. [Fiery Cross]

  x Lee, Charles, Major General—(1732–1782) Known as Ounewaterika, or “Boiling Water,” by his wife’s family, the Mohawk. A career soldier with a mixed reputation, he takes service with the Continental army and, on the strength of his experience and undoubted bravery, becomes Washington’s second in command prior to the Battle of Monmouth. Owing to his part in the events of that battle, Lee is court-martialed for incompetence but is eventually acquitted. [MOBY]

  Lee, Warren—Secretary to the Reverend Doctor McCorkle, he is present at the Reverend McMillan’s home and relates a story of his time spent with the Massachusetts militia during the Battle of Breed’s Hill and how he shot a British officer during the battle. He confesses to Roger privately that, even though he didn’t know if the soldier lived or died, he prayed for him every night anyway. [Ashes]

  LeGrand, Jeanne (aka Madame Jeanne)—French madame of Edinburgh brothel, partner and customer of “Jamie Roy” during his time in the brandy-smuggling business. Through her many clients, the madame has a strong sense of just about any happenings in Edinburgh. [Echo]

  Lenny, Jr.—Joe Abernathy’s grandson. [MOBY]

  Léonie—The late Lillie Murray’s sister, she becomes pregnant by a married lover and attempts to seduce a drunken Michael Murray to save her honor and that of her child. When that fails, she purchases an abortifacient to rid herself of the child. [SB]

  Leopold—A large albino python with a voracious appetite and nasty attitude, brought from the West Indies by Madame Fabienne many years ago; she claims that her pet is a spirit, or Mystère, a mediary between God and man. [SB]

  LeRoi—Stephen Bonnet’s closest companion, one with whom Brianna is acquainted and would like to forget. I.e., Bonnet’s pet name for his penis. [Ashes]

  Lester—Claire’s cheerful triage aide at the Battle of Saratoga, familiar with tourniquets as well as the blood and filth of war. [Echo]

  Lethbridge-Stewart, Brigadier—A British officer present at Wolfe’s storming of the Citadel at Quebec. (Also the name of a fictional character more commonly known as “The Brigadier” from the modern science-fiction television show Doctor Who.) [CA]

  Lewis, Mr.—The Edinburgh spectacle-maker whom Claire and Jamie visit upon their arrival in Scotland while transporting home the body of General Simon Fraser.
Jamie and Claire both invest in eyeglasses—a serviceable pair for reading for Jamie; a slightly stronger and gold-rimmed pair for Claire. [Echo]

  Light, Mrs.—The wife of the Tuscarora brave Light on Water, she is abducted by the Cherokee tribe governed by Bird/Tsisqua, with whom Jamie and Ian have a tenuous alliance; Jamie and Ian assist with the ransom to return her to her husband. [Ashes]

  Light on Water—Tuscarora brave who escapes an attack by the Cherokee with whom Jamie has a friendship; his wife is taken captive, but Jamie and Ian, through their diplomacy, help Light to retrieve her, and the Tuscaroras are adopted into the Cherokee. [Ashes]

  Lillington, Alexander—Cousin to Randall Lillington; leader of the Patriot forces at the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge. As they face MacDonald and McLeod’s combined Highland and British forces across the waterway, Lillington questions Jamie’s loyalty to the cause since Jamie, too, is a Highlander. [Ashes]

  Lillington, Randall (identified in early editions as “Lillywhite”)—A magistrate of the circuit court and personal friend of Governor Tryon, he is asked to meet with Lieutenant Hayes and other powerful men of the region. Later, he enters into a smuggling contract with other local businessmen and the notorious pirate, Stephen Bonnet, and is killed by Roger during a scuffle. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Lind, Mrs.—An apparently well-endowed woman whom a very drunk William Ransom and Sandy Lindsay are discussing following a dinner party with fellow officers and several young ladies. [Echo]

  x Lindsay, Alexander, Major; Sandy—(1752–1825) The Sixth Earl of Balcarres, Sandy is a fellow officer and friend of William’s, who was also with Burgoyne during the surrender at Saratoga. At Ticonderoga, he and William have a philosophical discussion comparing the Indian savages to Scots and their trainability as soldiers. Later, just prior to the British withdrawal from Philadelphia in June of 1778, Sandy takes William out for an evening of drinking and women; William ends up at Madge’s brothel, where he again meets Jane and has a confrontation with Captain Harkness.
