Bridge to Fruition

She did, and he pulled one thing more out of his pocket, something dark, which he kept wrapped in his hand. Then he lowered himself to the sand, resting on one knee.
Her intake of breath was involuntary.
“Jasmine, I can’t imagine my life without you in it. I want to devote myself to you, and you to devote yourself to me, as man and wife. In hopes that you’ll say yes, I picked this out for you.” He opened his palm, popped open a velvet box of midnight blue. She shone the flashlight on it and a diamond on a plain gold band reflected back at her. “Will you marry me?”
She screamed and fell down on her knees too, grabbed his jaw and pulled him in for a long kiss. “Yes! Yes yes yes. I will marry you, Dax, with pleasure.” She extended her left ring finger to him.
He laughed and fumbled the ring out of the box. He held it tightly in his hand, then slid it gracefully onto her finger. “We don’t have to rush.” He stared into her eyes. “I just want you to know how I feel about you, and about our future together.”
They sat back on the sand and held each other. Billy Joel wrapped up his love song and Dax snapped it off. “I got permission from all three of your parents,” he said.
“You’re kidding! Oh, my gosh. Over and above the call of duty.”
“They all approved.”
“Well, of course they did. You’re the best guy I’ve ever known.”
They rose, wiped sand off their legs and headed back to The Old Gray Barn, their future of possibilities as vast as the sky above them.
