Billion Dollar Man

On the days where Mila and I would both work, I’d hired a nanny to look after Landon. But we wanted to do most of it ourselves. Just because we could afford it, didn’t mean we wanted to be away from our child all the time.
Mila fell asleep not long after. I stayed awake, making sure she got in a good rest. And making sure that Landon was okay. I had told Mila the baby monitor would work fine, and I was sure it would. But it was our first day back home, and I wanted personally to make sure he was alright.
Much later, when Mila woke up, she changed into a dress that she hadn’t been able to put on for months. She brushed her hair and put on makeup before going to feed Landon and change him.
They were ready about the same time the first guest arrived.
Skylar was first to meet Landon. We hadn’t wanted any visitors at the hospital. Mila and I had wanted that time to ourselves.
“Oh, my God, Mila!” Skylar exclaimed when she saw Landon. “He’s too precious. Can I hold him?”
Mila smiled as the proudest mother on earth and handed Landon to Skylar. Skylar was careful with Landon and Mila sat next to her friend. They talked about the birth, about how glad Mila was to have her body back and other small things.
Skylar didn’t stay very long. When she left, Jerrod arrived almost as if it had been agreed that they would come one at a time.
“That’s one handsome baby,” Jerrod said, kissing his sister on the cheek and clapping me on the back. “Congrats. You two did great.”
We talked a little about when I would be able to get away for a drink with the boys. I laughed.
“I’ll see, but for now I think boys’ nights will have to consist of a beer here at home so I can be here when my family needs me.”
“Nonsense,” Mila said. “You’re not supposed to be on house arrest. Go out with your friends when you need it. I’ll need it, too.”
I looked at Jerrod who pulled up his shoulders.
“Can’t argue with your woman.”
When he left, my mom and Paul came by, followed by Miranda and Harry. Everyone fussed over Mila just how it was supposed to be. She had done all the hard work carrying Landon for nine months, and she had given birth as if it was nothing. She was a strong woman. I loved her more than anything.
Finally, after everyone had met Landon and we were alone again, we bathed him together. Mila fed him, rocking in the nursing chair while I locked up the house.
When Landon was asleep, we lay in bed together.
“Are you happy?” I asked.
“Very,” Mila said. “I am a little nervous about what the next few days will be like with Landon, but I’m sure we’ll get through it.”
“We will,” I said, determined. I was also nervous. We had a new baby, and neither of us had any idea what we were doing. But we had each other, and we were a team. We would figure this out.
“I am so glad I’m doing this with you,” Mila said after she had been so silent I’d thought she’d fallen asleep. I had been watching Landon sleeping on the baby monitor.
“I wouldn’t want it with anyone else.”
Mila yawned. “I love you,” she said.
“I love you, too.”
Because when we loved each other, what more did we need?
