By the she disappeared, the Upholder was responsible for the sinking of 97,000 tons of enemy ships and cargo in addition to one destroyer and three U boats.
As quoted by the Admiral Lord Fieldhouse, “I can do no better than repeat the unique message following the sinking of HMS Upholder on April 14th 1942: ‘The ship and her company are gone but the example and inspiration remain.’”
She was a very small vessel, not meant for the perils and hardships of war in distant areas and deep water. She was initially built for short-range war along the coasts, and appropriately, classed as a "Small Patrol Submarine," similar to other vessels in her class. She had a crew of just 31 sailors, was extremely slow and under-equipped when compared to her bigger sisters in the British Royal Navy. Even the different naval forces of the world had bigger submarines than the Upholder, which were continuously pitted against this tiny submarine. She couldn't dive beyond 200 feet, which made her helpless in clear water like the waters of the Mediterranean. Just 196 feet long, she could do close to 111/2 knots at the surface of the sea and only nine when submerged. However, she overcame all odds and emerged as one of the most successful submarines of the Royal Navy. It is to recognize and honor the fact she overcame insurmountable odds that the Admiralty gave her and her crew a special tribute. Her commander, Lieutenant Commander David Wanklyn was also awarded the Victoria Cross in 1941 for the patrol on May 24th 1941 where he managed to sink the Italian vessel SS Conte Rosso that was carrying troops to Africa.
Conclusion
We hope that you have enjoyed reading about the remarkably brave men who manned the submarines of World War II.
The Battle of the Atlantic is considered by many historians to be the pivotal battle of the war in Europe. Without the defeat of the U-Boats, the Allies would never have gotten the men, machines, and supplies to England, Europe, and the Soviet Union to where they were so desperately needed. After the war, Winston Churchill in his memoirs wrote, "The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril".
The war in the Pacific was costly and brutal. It took long hard fighting for the forces of the Allies to drive the Japanese back across the Pacific to their home islands. Part of the reason they were able to do that was the inability of the Japanese to supply their navy and army adequately. The submarines (along with the other branches of the Navy) effectively prevented any significant amount of supply to reach Japan after 1944. By the end of the war, many Japanese throughout the country were on the verge of starvation.
We hope that this volume will encourage you to dig deeper into the fascinating history of the submarine in the Second World War.
