Damion

Page 21

by Leanne Davis

Three mornings a week, I’ll be watching Devon and Claudia’s twin boys—ironic, right? They will be born in four months… Yes, it twists my heart with reminiscence since I did that for my first best friend. The one who, in so many ways, brought me all that I have now. I still think about her often and miss her desperately.

But whatever happens is meant to be, and I know we, Damion and I, will face it, live it, fight it, champion it, crush it, and celebrate it together, as we face life.

I jump a little when Damion’s voice shatters my daydreams with his own sincere, confident and impassioned, “I do.”

Oh crap. Am I still in middle of our wedding ceremony? It’s not over yet?

God, I love having all these dreams. And feeling so much love. Who knew how love could make me feel? Everything is brilliant. It makes me believe and feel everything is possible.

After a few more moments of pretty words, thoughts and scriptures, all I can do is stare up at the man I’ve fallen in love with and pledged my old age to. The man I’ll raise a kid with, and hopefully, God willing, more kids with. And for me and him, they will be unique and will especially need us. We’ve both learned we have a gift in handling and dealing with all kinds of problems… together. Something we had to learn when they befell us.

I look to the man I call my best friend, my lover, my helpmate, and my companion.

And all of this is fully realized when the minister has us turn and face the church crowd of Silver Springs who are there exclusively to celebrate us. I see Chet and Chloe sitting beside Ryder and Tara with their kids and families. Wesley and Dani are with their three kids. Wyatt and Jacey and their two kids, and I spot people we work with, along with friends of the Willapanas, the Kincaids, and loyal patrons of Damion and Devon’s café. Speaking of which, it franchised out and now has three locations in California and two in Oregon. I’m sure it’ll continue to grow, even though Silver Springs will always be the home base.

  And our final destination.

Dayshia sits with Chloe, she’s fascinated with my dress, but wearing earphones. We discovered too many sounds and people at once prompt her tantrums and only age will fully cause them to dissipate. She’s staring at us, and she smiles, then turns away. My heart fills with love for her. To the max. But I smile when she tunes me out.

Everyone smiles and people wipe the tears in their eyes. It’s a beautiful wedding. Everyone is happy and filled with joy. It’s worth every cent to feel this moment.

“May I introduce you to Mr. and Mrs. Willapana, a brand new couple…”

Joining hands, the ensuing cheers and applause erupt until they are ear-splitting. The confetti is thrown as we almost skip towards the back of the church. My heart is flying and free and so far from who and what I used to be.

I never dreamed this. Who knew reality could be better than any dream I could have? Who knew happiness actually exists? An imperfect, hard, struggling, glorious, changing, morphing and forever-in-flux condition? But it does and I found a way to feel it and find it. I believe that could last forever.

  THE REMAINING SISTER.

  “Chet?” she whispered, “I need—”

  “What?”

You. Someone. Something to take the pain away. But she knew that was impossible and irresponsible. There could be no repeats of this. This blunder. This shameful, slutty act. Done on the very same day she was honoring her sister. She left her parents in the lurch too. “I just need to sleep for a little while.”

She curled up, tugging the pillow under her head and drawing her legs up higher. He leaned over, kissed her on the forehead and retreated, getting off the bed. She held her breath. What was she waiting for? Something more. Something prophetic. Something rational. Something that could justify her actions. But he gathered his clothes and walked out of the room without a glance backwards. Wow. He really took her at her word. No questions. No warm fuzzies. No clinging vines. No trying to convince her otherwise. He did exactly as she asked.

The thing was, she really wanted him to do exactly the opposite.
