Enraptured

by Gale, Colette

“Though you have captured my heart,” Zenovia said, her voice brittle and hard, “you are still nothing but a slave.” She gave Jane a rough shove, sending her tumbling to the floor.

Another metallic click that sounded ominous in the dim room, and then Zenovia gave her a sharp kick in the hip.

“Until later, my cunty slave.” And she strode from the chamber.

Exhausted, aching, and hardly able to sob, she was so weary, Jane tried to pull herself up. But she hardly moved before she realized the other end of her collar was attached to the bedpost.

She was chained, like a dog—a pet—with only a small circumference of movement. The floor was hard, tiled, and she had nothing for her comfort.

  She had nothing left.

She lowered herself to the ground with a soft clink, closed her eyes, and sobbed.

  _______

Jane awoke abruptly to the strong scent of smoke.

Her eyes shot open as she realized the smoke was strong, filling the chamber. Flames licked in the distance, sending eerie shadows dancing along the walls.

She tried to sit up, but the collar was still affixed to the bedpost. She had nowhere to go.

  Nowhere but to her death.

She closed her eyes once more, ready for the smoke to overtake her. Please forgive me, Zaren, was her last thought as she gave up.

Suddenly, the metal collar moved, released from her neck… Strong arms gathered her close.

Zaren, she thought, smiling against the broad, warm chest. Alive or dead, she was with him.

  She was safe.

He moved, running from the chamber, huddled low to the ground. Jane heard shouts and cries in the distance—the sounds of panic and activity.

But she was safe. And those strong arms would care for her until she could open her eyes.

He ran, carrying her as if she were nothing but a sackcloth, and she was too weak to even hold on to him, or to even speak.

It seemed like he went on forever, dodging around corners and even on streets—she wasn’t certain; it was all a blur.

The sky was dark, and the world was shadowed. The smell of smoke receded. The scent of sea filled her nostrils. The sounds of waves reached her ears, and a shout, a warning, and order cut through the night.

“Here we are,” he muttered into her ear. She felt him running up a wooden ramp—a gangplank. “Safe. Safe and together at last, my lovely enchantress.”

  Enchantress?

Jane’s eyes bolted open, gritty and dry from the smoke and dehydration.

It wasn’t Zaren who held her, who’d spirited her away.

  It was Akenov.
