by Volante, KT

More than once, Jeff had to tell them not to trample the vegetables. They ran off to the other side of the yard to play.

“I think we have the best crop of weeds ever!” I said with a laugh.

Sister Bernadette stood up and stretched her back. She looked around.

  “Lacey! Where are the kids?”

Jeff and I popped up to a stand and looked around.

  “Kids! Kids!” Jeff yelled.

I ran to the fence. I could hear them, but I couldn’t see them.

Sister Bernadette and Jeff were next to me.

“Kids!” bellowed Jeff. His face was red, his eyes narrowed.

  Then we heard the screams.

“Where’s it coming from?” Sister asked.

Jeff ran to the middle of the street, looking up and down. Then we heard more screams.

“The next street over! This way!” he said as he ran in that direction with the two of us right behind him.

We turned the corner to see Jeremiah in a telephone truck bucket with Simon, Kevin, and Lucy halfway up the crane.

A half-dozen LDs were around the truck. They reached for the kids with their decaying hands. Their rotten teeth snapped, and their smell assaulted the air.

We were stunned at the sight. My heart jumped into my throat.

Then Lucy slid sideways over the crane’s edge. I screamed.
