by Bernard, Lynnette

Both Burke and Murdock dove forward, reaching both men within just a few hard strokes. They had the two men pulled from the water quickly and settled them carefully on the lake shore. Murdock settled himself behind the man who was holding the man who was injured.

Burke knelt before the two men, taking in the seriousness of the situation immediately. He gazed down at the nearly unconscious man, reaching up and brushing aside the dark hair that partially covered the man’s face, and froze. It was the man he had been seeing in his dreams for the past twenty years.

He breathed in deeply, allowing the scent of the man to fill him. It confirmed what he already knew. This man was his.

“Dane! Do not leave this world!”

“I am so very tired, Alec,” Dane whispered.

Alec pressed his hand tighter against Dane’s chest, trying to stem the flow of blood that was escaping his brother’s wound. He tried to focus his magic to heal his brother, unable to keep the frustration he was feeling from consuming him as he realized that he had been severely weakened in the fight to protect the rest of the men as they tried to escape.

“I have failed,” Dane said weakly. “Haron was injured. I tried to carry him. He was pulled from my arms.”

The goodness of this man was displayed by the white aura that surrounded him. There was a slight wavering of the area around him before it cleared and Burke saw the most incredible sight he had ever seen. Wings that were almost invisible fluttered slightly as they folded over Dane’s body. The air that was displaced by the wings washed over him and sent warmth through him.

Alec held Dane tightly against him. There was a golden glow pulsing from his hand as he held it over Dane’s chest. Burke saw the bleeding wound and knew real fear.

“Dane,” Burke whispered, reaching out and touching one of the wings with reverence. The moment his hand made contact with the delicate wing, the connection to him was made. He could feel the life force of the man slowly ebbing.

  His mate was dying.
