Just as I’m starting to feel a bit better, I hear the opening of Unconditionally. I drop my head into my hands and feel like crap all over again. Why couldn’t the DJ wait until I left to play it? A pair of feet in ballet flats appears in between my own feet and I look up to see Bridget standing there, looking completely gorgeous, like I knew she would. She smiles down at me and holds out her hand.

“They’re playing our song,” she says.

My heart leaps right to my mouth and I swallow hard.

She wiggles her fingers. “Well, come on. It won’t go on forever. The DJ made me wait half the night to play it already.”

  “You’ve been here all along?”

She shrugs. “About an hour.” She reaches down and takes my hand, pulling me to my feet. She pulls my arms around her waist and puts her arms around my neck. Without realising it, we’re dancing.

“And you didn’t think to come and see me?” I ask. “I’ve been looking for you all night.”

  “I know. Luke told me.”

  “Luke?”

“Can we just enjoy the moment?” she asks.

I pull away but she won’t let me go. “You made me think you weren’t coming.”

“I’m sorry, Quinn. I just wanted to do something special. Brittany did all those things this week—”

I cut her off. “Brittany doesn’t really like me.”

  Bridget smiles. “I know.”

“What about your dad?” I ask.

“I’ll work it out. Can you just be quiet and dance with me?”

I do as I’m told and we dance together while the rest of the song plays, completely oblivious to our surroundings. Just as the song comes to an end and another one begins, she leans up and kisses me.

“Not as spectacular as a singing gorilla,” she says when she finally pulls away. “I mean, I was hoping you’d be inside and I could, you know, make the dance floor part and walk over to you and ask you to dance. But then you were gone and Luke told me you were out here—”

I laugh, cutting her off. “I liked this better.” I pull her to me again, and kiss her. Her fingers slide up into my hair and our bodies press together. It’s the most amazing thing I have ever felt. I’m vaguely aware of woof whistles and clapping and when I look up, Luke and Brittany are standing there, grinning.

“I guess we’ll be staying a bit longer?” Luke asks.

  “I guess so,” I reply.

“Want to go back inside?” Bridget asks.

I nod, and she takes my hand, intertwining her fingers into mine. I grin and let her lead me back inside and onto the dance floor. She doesn’t let go of my hand all night.
