The sun was hot and Pike wiped his brow with a bandana. He’d been working on his bike in the driveway for almost an hour and was working up a sweat. There wasn’t anything wrong with his bike, he just liked to keep it in pristine condition.

“Everything OK?” he said sitting up when I grabbed my stomach.

“Ugh, yeah. I’m… fine,” I said pinching my eyes shut.

“You sure?” Pike said as he got up and walked over to me. “Having another one?”

I took a deep breath, “Yes.”

“Is it time? Should I call your mom?” he said looking on both sides of me for my phone.

  “I don’t think… so.”

“I think we need to start timing them. They’re getting closer,” he said as he kneeled down in front of me and met my eyes.

“Hold on,” I said grabbing my stomach tighter. I was trying to think of anything but the tightening feeling around my middle. “OK… OK. Maybe you’re right.”

The pain was starting to vanish, but that contraction had been bigger than the last. I smiled at him as my stomach relaxed.

“I love you… you know that right?” he said lightly rubbing my belly.

“Who are you talking to?” I said with a little smirk.

  “Both of you.”

“Well, we love you too,” I said, but I winced as it felt as though another contraction wasn’t too far off. They were becoming more regular and the time between each one felt too short. “Uhh.”

“I’m calling her. And the hospital.”

I didn’t even argue. It had taken time but my family finally, sort of, accepted me and Pike into their lives. Truthfully, they only barely tolerated Pike, but he was fine with it, so I was too.

They’d come around. Especially with their granddaughter on the way. At first I thought my mom would try to keep it a secret from everyone, but I had been wrong. She told everyone she possible could about her granddaughter.

“Ughhh. Mmmm,” I moaned as another contraction started. Through the fog of the pain I heard Pike behind me talking to someone on the phone.

As he stepped around, I saw through my half-closed eyelids that he was carrying my bag. “Another one?”

“Yes!” I roared since it seemed obvious to me that I was in pain. “Let’s go,” I said trying to stand up, but sat back down to wait it out.

“OK. We’re going to be OK. Hospital is ready. Your mom has been called. As soon as you’re ready… we’ll go.”

I breathed in and out trying to make the world around me disappear. The second the pain started to diminish, I stood up, “OK let’s go!”

I waddled to the car hoping we’d make it there before the next contraction but knowing we wouldn’t. Pike smiled at me as he helped me into the car.

“I can’t wait to meet her,” he said turning his head to the side so I couldn’t see he was getting a little emotional at the thought.

“Me either,” I said grabbing his hand for a second, “but let’s go! I don’t want to have her in the front seat of my car.”

He closed my door and ran around the car, throwing my bag into the backseat. After he sat down he started the car and backed out of the driveway. He took my hand into his and drove far too fast, but I didn’t complain.

  It was time.

We were going to have our baby. Pike, me and little Ava were going to be a family. And despite the pain, I couldn’t have been more happy.

  The End.
