“You retire. Take time off. Do whatever you want.”
“You forget that I was here when Tony Rheems was fired. I know what happened to him because I was in on it. Does that mean I have the same fate in store for me?”
“No Taylor. I trust you. I know you would never do what Tony threatened. He was stupid. You are a smart man and know the consequences of such action. I will have a generous severance package for you and you won’t ever have to work again. I give you my word,” Clemons said.
“Do I need to brief the general before I am dismissed?”
“General?” the President asked.
“I’m fine. I have already chosen Mr. Spears’ replacement and he will take over immediately.”
“May I ask who?” Taylor asked.
“General Lamb. He will now head up the ISS.”
***
“Do you trust this General Lamb?” the President asked.
“I do. He is a good soldier with sterling credentials. His fitness reports are all top notch and he signed the oath you required without hesitation. I think he is the right person for the job.”
“Good. We don’t need another Spears in that position.”
“I have no doubt that he will do the job to your satisfaction.”
“What about Mr. Spears?”
“I assume you want him to have an accident of some kind.”
“I would be sad to lose him but accidents do happen every day,” Clemons replied.
“Yes. They most certainly do,” the general agreed.
“Can we do anything at all about that reporter, Mark Walker?”
“Not at the moment. Maybe after he is out of the limelight something can be arranged but for now it would do more harm than good. He would become a martyr and that is the last thing we need,” Douglas answered.
“Alright. I don’t like it but I agree.”
“Anything else?”
“When are you going after the South Dakota Militia?”
“We are in the process right now. The planes and troops leave at 0600 hours tomorrow.”
“I want them wiped out. I want to send a clear picture to the rest of the militias that we will not put up with any interference from a bunch of Boy Scouts playing soldier.”
“I intend to send them a message that they won’t forget for a long, long time. When we are finished, the message will be crystal clear,” Douglas assured her.
“Good luck General.”
“Thank you Madam President.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
- ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, SOUTH DAKOTA –
Ellsworth Air Force Base is located just ten miles from Rapid City, South Dakota and is easily accessed by Interstate 90. The base is host to the 28th Bomb Wing of the Air Combat’s 12th Air Command. It is where the US keeps the B-1B Lancer Strategic Bombers. The base is home to around 8,000 men and women stationed there.
Thomas, Lincoln, Baker, AJ, and Uber had worked out an attack plan with Jim Deal of the South Dakota Militia. Thomas had been able to finally connect with Lamb and ascertain the time that Douglas’s forces were due to land.
The plan was simple but required them to have the element of surprise and to move fast. Once they were committed they had to hit all of their targets or it would be a disaster.
The South Dakota Militia would attack the planes just as soon as they lowered their cargo ramps. They would come in from the north and east. The Idaho Militia would attack the planes in the hangers, repair facilities, and munitions storage. The idea was to damage equipment, take what they could, and harm as few of the military personnel as absolutely possible. The destruction of the planes and cargo was their primary goal.
They waited, maintaining radio silence and watching for the first plane to land. Thirty minutes later they could hear them coming in from the southeast. This is exactly what they had hoped for. The planes, once landed would be at the northeast end of the runway and would have to taxi back to the unloading area. This would put them within easy reach of Deal’s men.
All of the talking was over. It was now or never as far as the militia was concerned. Once they breached the outer fence, everything would change forever.
The first plane touched down followed almost immediately by the second and third. As soon as the first plane came to a stop, Deal got his men ready to cut the fence. It was time.

WESTERNS:
Unfinished
Marshall Huffman has been writing for personal pleasure for the past ten years. He didn't consider publishing any of his works until Susan, his wife, talked him into giving it a try. Thanks to Amazon.com giving new authors a chance to e-publish, he finally took the plunge in 2011 and published the trilogy: THE EVENT, comprised of Book I - THE END, Book II - THE BEGINNING and Book III - THE REVELATION. It is a trilogy about a cataclysmic event that destroys most of the population. The acceptance by the public encouraged him to publish his second trilogy: THE SECOND CIVIL WAR. Book I - A NATION DIVIDED, Book II - A NATION AT WAR, and Book III - A NATION HEALING. Both of the trilogies are a chilling view of what the future of America could look like given the current climate in today's world.
Marshall then decided to try his hand at a slightly different genre: Sci-fi thrillers. He wrote THE BRINK - OPERATION DEEP FLIGHT. His Second Sci-fi thriller is titled: BLACKSTAR. He has since written CLOSE PROXIMITY and CHIMERA
Recently he has been writing mysteries and has three different detective series. The Logan Files involve a slow but tenacious detective named John Logan. A cast of central characters is featured in each of the books. The Norris Files lead character is JD Norris, a rogue detective who does not play well with others. There is a core cast of characters in each of these mysteries as well. The latest series is the Angelina Bartoni Cases Files. Detective Bartoni is not like the female detectives that are on television. You won't find her in short tight skirt, low cut blouses, or high-heels and she isn't about to try to fight the bad guy. She may shoot them in the knee but she is smart enough to know her limits. The central characters become old friends as each mystery unfolds.
Marshall was born in Bainbridge, Georgia and grew up in Indiana. After spending eight years in the Navy, he attended Ball State University, earning a B.S. degree in Business. Du
ring and after college, he was involved in the restaurant business and spent the next twenty-five years in all types of venues, eventually owing his own fine dining restaurant. After years of long hours, he decided on a career change.
He attended Eastern Illinois University earning a MBA. Because of his business background, Eastern Illinois University asked him to teach in the hospitality management program. He was recruited from Eastern to Parkland College and soon took over as the Program Director for the Hospitality Program. During his tenure there, he became a chef and had a television show called Cooking Around The World With Chef Marshall and taught a series of cooking classes for Continuing Education as well. Professor Huffman retired from teaching along with his wife, Dr. Susan Huffman, to Tampa Bay Florida.
