Maybe I just needed to stop trying. Maybe I was right in the first place when I’d stopped dating. It wasn’t worth it. I might have been alone before, but at least I wasn’t in a constant state of being heartbroken. I had to start protecting myself again.
The music started, and I felt it was fairly safe to leave the stall. Nearly everybody would be back in their seats, and I could slip out without being noticed. I checked the mirror on my way out. My face was a mess, mascara streaming down my cheeks. I wiped it away as best I could and splashed cold water on my face for the third time that night.
I have to get out of here, I thought. I couldn’t stand to be there a minute longer.
The tears hadn’t totally stopped when I left the bathroom. But I kept my head down, working through the crowd, the red EXIT sign like a beacon. I only had to get there. Just that far. It was so close.
“Sarah?” I bumped straight into John. “Are you okay?”
I dared to look into his friendly green eyes, planning to make some excuse. But when I saw the genuine concern there, I nearly lost it even worse than before. I can’t tell him. I don’t even know him. Besides, I couldn’t speak coherently. I brushed past him without a word, running for the door. I’d never felt so used in my life and couldn’t wait to take a long, hot shower. Maybe two of them.
I flagged a cab, a string of muttered curses pouring from my mouth as I did. The bitterness inside was endless. People must have thought I was a little crazy, and maybe I was. They looked at me, then quickly looked away. Well, the way I was feeling at that moment, they might have been right.
The cab pulled away from the curb as I sank gratefully into the seat. I felt protected there, somehow. My chariot, whisking me away to the safety of my apartment.
My phone buzzed again with a text from Tammy. Hey. Are you okay?
I’m fine—physically, anyway, I replied.
Call me when you’re up to it. I doubted I would be up to it for at least a day, if then. I told her I’d call when I got the chance, then slid the phone back into my purse.
There was one thing I had to do before I could start to erase the memory of that evening from my mind and heart.
With a deep breath, I pulled out my phone and deleted all my selfies with Kris.

With such a good looking advocate on the board, she’s not disappointed when they are thrown into working more closely together.
As their mutual attraction grows, Sarah begins to think that perhaps her luck has finally changed after all.
